I haven't tried it yet but because I use 2 mats, a foam and an air mattress, I would put it in between. I saw one guy that did it and said it worked. I just wear my down jacket in my bag if it gets cold. I only camp in the early spring or late fall.

here is a lifehack for you: put a reflective blanket beneat your tent or even beneat your pad. it will be the exact same thing as those very very expensive "insulated" sleeping pad.

I'm a bit late to the party here. But I use one of those thicker versions of that blanket on the ground. No issues with moisture and plus it does reflect the heat back.

Jesus, we are talking about -8°C . Here in Norway that's a pretty warm night mid winter... at least when you are in the mountains. A Primaloft or Down jacket combined with decent woollen underwear and a beanie + your sleeping bag and you are good to go. In a double wall winter tent that's even too warm. Most of the time the shelter is not suitable. for winter conditions. I am a keen tarptent camper summertime. Tried it once in winter ( no wind, -20)....never again.

What about putting a blanket at the very bottom (not completely covering yourself, just laying underneath) and placing a sleeping bag on top? The clothing should reflect the heat of the bag, and at the same time contain the cold of the earth.

@@BackcountryForward Underneath sleeping pad. At the very bottom is some kind of thermal mat, above it is an emergency blanket, and on top is a sleeping pad. I went hiking and in my experience, during sleep, heat is lost from: the cold of the ground, wind and rain/snow.

I'm sorry you feel this way. Believe it or not, I filmed this video about 2 years ago after my thru-hike. But it sat on the "shelf" for a long time. My intent was to explain the difference and progression of mummy bags to quilts, and how I feel this quilt was actually designed specifically for ground sleeping and incorporates some of the best features of mummy bags but in quilt form (eg. the way the shoulders curl in to "tuck" around you, the shape of the foot box (which to my knowledge, I haven't seen in any other quilts, etc.). But mostly, just wanted to help inform and maybe get a few people who are "quilt hesitant" the confidence to try something new! Regardless, thanks for your input, and Keep Moving Forward! ~ Jesse

What always ticked me off is You are paying triple the price for a sleeping bag with less fill. Less material. No hood and no zippers... They should be 3x cheaper.. Quilts are a scam and the manufacturers are laughing their way to the bank at all the dorky UL'ers money. I have never seen a fair priced Quilt.
@BackcountryForward
@BackcountryForward 3 ай бұрын
While they aren’t 3x cheaper. I can confirm that the OV quilts ARE cheaper than the OV sleeping bags. But yeah… sadly prices aren’t driven just by materials but also by supply and demand. And it seems the demand for quilts his high, and the supply relatively low (you can’t find them just at any big box store). Where has there’s 10:1 sleeping bags available for every quilt. So I think that has a bigger impact on the price.

Hard agree. Of course "the industry" loves quilts. Imagine believing a single thing that a company says whose sole motive is to sell product. Makes you shake your head and wonder.
@BackcountryForward
@BackcountryForward 3 ай бұрын
@@Nickropolis but “the industry” doesn’t love quilts. In fact big name and big box manufacturers make very few quilts and they are rarely very sell well. It’s only the “niche market” of ultra-light and thru-hikers who love quilts. And there’s a (relatively) small market of home spun, garage start-ups who rose up to start to meet that demand. Now some of those companies have gotten a bit larger (like EE or OV). But they are still tiny companies compared to “industry” companies like REI, Thermarest, Marmot, North Face etc. That’s like saying “the big bread industry” loves selling delicate pastries because little bakeries on the streets sell pastries… meanwhile the real industry (wonder bread, big box grocery stores) almost exclusively sell loaves of bread and just have pastries as a small side option. You’re calling the little guys “the industry” because they’ve found a niche market to serve. When the big name brands (the real industry) are making a fortune off of serving the masses who only want sleeping bags (or only know about sleeping bags). I think it’s good for small companies to find niche markets to serve. Like those ultralighters and thru-hikers who want quilts.
@Nickropolis

@@BackcountryForward Thanks for the reply. I'm relatively new to backpacking but what I see is quilts being pushed by just about everyone and backed by sponsors. Maybe it's a specific usage case and I'm only looking at media that talks about quilts. Whether it's a small company or large you're still part of the industry. Everybody has different needs so if a quilt works for you then you should buy a quilt.
@BackcountryForward
@BackcountryForward 3 ай бұрын
@@Nickropolis I definitely agree with this! That was sort of the point of the beginning of this video. The demand, interest, and focus of the industry has grown and changed. In the end, I agree, do what’s best for you. In fact I even say in this video… I still prefer sleeping bags for some trips and for winter. But I do think it’s worth informing people. You’re right though they are very popular among the majority of online creators, and the quilt manufacturers have definitely got a very good presence on social media. I think why they are so popular is simply because it’s such an easy way, and relatively affordable (because they are generally way cheaper than a similar weight sleeping bag) way to shave off significant weight without drastically changing comfort. Lightweight backpacks change how you have to pack and how weight carries on your back. Lightweight tents are usually not freestanding, and cost a lot of money. Sleeping pads sacrifice comfort for weight savings. But you can lose a lost a pound of weight, but still be warm and have good sleeps in a quilt (albeit it does take some getting used to). Those are just my thoughts… I think we mostly agree … but hey… I’m just from the part of the industry that posts one video every 2 years 😅 Cheers mate! Keep moving forward!

You actually did the right thing to put the emergency blanket between you and the other blanket. It was a mistake to move it outwards later because you let the other blanket get humid. But imo the main mistake was selecting the wrong bag in the first place. I use emergency sleeping bags as bag liners pretty often to extend my sleeping system's usability. The humidity that accumulates inside can't escape. This means the sleeping bag stays 100% dry. VBLs are typically used in multi-day excursions in frigid temps where keeping the bag dry is of paramount importance. But they do work even in milder temps.

That was funny, thanks, enjoyed it a lot even though I knew (and tried) already all of them. The seafood bomb tastes imho much (means really much) better if you use tuna/sardines in tomato sauce and add some ketchup to the mix. A bit of Thyme makes it even more perv ect. And instead of jerky, most Europeans would most probably prefer to add any salami, cervelat, or Landjäger.
