Got to the first, or certainly one of the first, reviewds of the Ventus and I must say a great review. You describe a unique piece of kit that just hits a ton of "got to try" buttons. Outdoor Vitals is my supplier of choice for a lot of reasons, but certainly design, functionality, quality, and cost are all up there. Looks like the Ventus does that. Thanks again for the great review

Thanks Chip! I really appreciate that! It really is a great piece. Totally fits into new "category" in-between mid-layer and insulated shell. It's actually made this video incredibly difficult to title. I'm still thinking maybe I should change it back to my original thoughts: "Not a jacket. Not a Hoodie. So Much More!" because it really is. What are your thoughts on that?

Small hoodie And, most of all, NO POCKETS !!! For get it !!!! There's plenty others out there that cover those things !!! But ZIP PITS SO I CAN CONTROL WHEN I and how much venting i want 😃. And I can wash in and spray on H2O resistance. A good wind breaker w moisture resistance is no problem. Sorry OV, but hey nice try. Add some pockets and a little bit more head cover protection and maybe I'll have something there.

thank you for this review.. i've just backed it on kickstarter and this allowed me to understand what i might be getting!! having watched your VERY comprehensive video, the properties for this garment you described is very close to a british outdoor garment "BUFFALO Special 6 shirt". Designed for use by british special forces, police & mountain rescue. I'd be very interested to see a comparison between the two in the future ? It is designed to be worn next to the skin, but most users wear a base layer underneath. it is an excellent garment but it requires you to generate body heat to keep warm. If you go from a cold environment to a warm environment, you have to take it off otherwise you'll overheat, hence why you need to wear a base layer underneath!
@BackcountryForward
@BackcountryForward 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks so much for letting me know you appreciated the video! I just checked out the Buffalo Special 6 Shirt. Unfortunately I don't think I'd be able to get it it do a side by side any time soon. However, I just want you to be aware that the buffalo special 6 shirt looks a lot heavier and for a lot colder temperatures than the Ventus. By all means the Ventus is a GREAT product, but at 200g I don't think it'd be able to quite compare to a 725g insulated product that really serves more like a light-weight coat. Whereas the the Ventus is more like a lightweight jacket. If that makes sense. A good comparison between the two is perhaps found in your own comments about the Special 6. You mention that if you come in from the cold you need to take off the special 6 because you'll over heat. That is not so much the case with the Ventus. I comfortably wear it indoors often. It can get a bit warm, and sometimes I opt to take it off (just like you would any hoodie or sweater), but it's not significantly warm. It looks like from my first glance the Special 6 is more insulated than the Ventus. But then again, the Ventus does perform surprisingly well. I can take it down to about -2c comfortably on a walk. -5c on a brisk walk where my heart is pumping bit more. and -7c or a bit lower if I'm going for a run. I just want to make sure you're getting something you'll find most useful and beneficial to your climate and expectations! Cheers, Keep Moving Forward.

Very nice video. Considering one now. Based on your active/inactive description of temperature you would be comfortable when wearing the Ventus and a wool base layer, what temperature do you think you'd be comfortable if you were also wearing the Patagonia Nano Puff? Active/inactive. Thanks!
@BackcountryForward
@BackcountryForward 2 жыл бұрын
I've never tested the Nano puff before and obviously it depends on if the wool layer is a thin wool layer or heavy wool layer, assuming you're layering for warmth (ie. a mid to heavy weigh wool): I think it would be fair to say you'd be warm to pretty extreme temperatures in an active situation (again depending on how hot/cold your body typically runs). I'd guess -4F or even lower if your exertion is high enough. But those temps are pretty extreme so you'd need to make sure you have warmer layers for inactive times. I definitely wouldn't push to those temperatures with JUST that set up. For inactive, you'd be comfortable at 20F easily and could probably hit 5F safely if you had a fire and/or were a warmer bodied person. Obviously these are super subjective. I've take the Ventus out with a base layer to 0F in active conditions and was warm. So I'm fairly confident with another layer you could push some pretty extreme temps, but that's risky as soon as you stop because the Ventus does just that, vents. Hot air out, cold air in. I got pretty chilly as soon as I stopped to start setting up camp at 0F and had to layer up another mid layer (fleece: 66 North Hrannar) and an outer shell (un-insulated) and was warm as I ate dinner but started feeling a chill the longer I lingered in 0F. Hope that long description helps! If you decide to buy one, it would be a huge help if you bought one using my affiliate link! (no extra charge to you, but I get a kickback for helping): geni.us/VentusHoodie

I'm 5'10" and 170lbs and I'm wearing a medium. I feel it fits great! I find all medium hoodies a bit tight to put on a first unless I get a large, but then I feel I'm swimming in it. The Ventus fits GREAT! Just like my other hoodies, it's a bit tight over the head, but once it's on it's perfect. comfortable, no pinch points, room to move and it moves with you, and I can still put a bigger layer underneath if I need to. I've put the fleece you see in this video under the Ventus no problem. If you are worried about fit due to some of Outdoor Vitals other products, don't be. They changed their fitting standards a ton and this fits great! Hope that all helps! If you're thinking of getting one, would you consider clicking the link below? It'd be a huge help to the channel. Great question! Sorry for the late reply! Not quite... but it DOES handle rain surprisingly well. I used it in the rain the other night and it was near zero. But it held up really well. But because it's not water proof in certain areas (zipper, armpits, sides) I did notice a little bit of moisture getting in, mostly from the perforated armpit holes and the zipper area. But was still really warm surprisingly despite crazy winds and getting it basically soaked!

Right now you can get it for $137 US or $144 US after today! The $180 Price comes into affect once it is stocked and warehoused on their website. For a premium performance piece, its a pretty comparable price to what's on the market. Considering the closest other product I've been able to find is the Arc'tyrex Atom SL Anorak is $209, I'd say $180 is still a fairly honest price.
