@@luvradios So what i found is the board had a lot of corrosion from leaking caps and one of the caps I soldered on actually had detached solder pads. So after cleaning that up I see the pads are completely lifted off the board. I ordered a used board pulled from another MDP-600 and I am going to check and change the caps on that one.

When the capstan assembly was out, did you notice how to loosen the tape guides slightly in order to rotate them 90 degrees or so? My deck has obvious tape wear pattern and want to turn the guides just a bit to new rounded metal. I am sending my heads out to JRF Magnetics for reconditioning, so I want to expose new tape guide smooth surface on the guides when the head block is reinstalled. Also, do the capstan spindles and flywheel assemblies simply push out of the bearings of the chassis? I am thinking that just behind the flywheels are the screws that secure the tape guides. Thanks - great video series!
@luvradios
@luvradios 10 күн бұрын
@@BrianTotten-r8d I didn’t notice how to remove or reposition the tape guides but I would imagine they can be rotated as you’re wanting to do, yes the capstans will come out for lubrication. I would love to know the frequency response pre & post having those heads done, I’m sure that’s not a cheap process and I wonder if the difference would justify the cost? Ive never run across one of these decks (assuming you are using a quality, well cared for tape) that didn’t produce spot on audio recordings with clean heads that still have the azimuth screws factory sealed using healthy pressure rollers.

For a person who hardly does any recording on cassettes anymore, would you suggest that I should buy it - it being a very “delicate” NAK and exceedingly difficult to service. At present I have a NAK CR2E and want to upgrade to a 3 head machine. Incidentally, a great, well-explained video.

Have a stack of factory Jeep Cherokee cassette players from 88-92 that need repairing. Did one repair myself by taking a good tape module out of a bad channel case and dropping it into a good left/right channel case. Need to know what is the cause of either the left or right channel going out in a couple of cases and one that has just slightly low volume with the vol knob maxed out. One has a high squeal thru speakers with no am/fm reception. The rest have faulty tape modules that will not draw the tape in and seat down in position. Can hear motor running. When you push tape in you have to pull tape out with needle nose pliers.
