Well done. I thought at first I was going to see an upper crust pisstake but after the initial sniggering comments it settled down well. In some ways the whole thing is not that unique, the massive Saddleworth Rush Cart, the Knutsford May Queen, the Castleton May procession, Minehead and its Obby OSS, the Britannia Coconut Dancers in Bacup, Queensferry Burry Man and a good few others have all endeavoured to survive despite establishment attempts to suppress. Not forgetting the various Mummers and Football games such as Ashbourne. The sniggering snide remarks usually aimed at Morrison Dancing don’t go down well in Saddleworth where the Morris Men are brawny 6 footers wearing clogs and taking no none sense from any one foolish enough to comment. Teams from all over the country turn up to dance and pull the Rushcart up the hill to the Church above the town. Any way, well done.

As a visitor to Padstow on May day I can echo the feeling of the maker of the Wicker man. The locals were not rude but they did not have the normal politeness that most give to strangers. An example was that a local barman would not serve one promptly even if it was to his financial benefit. I loved their celebration because it is the only traditional event that I have witnessed where the celebration still has some deep seated emotional involvement as opposed to a re-enactment of a distant past event.

Hi John, can you tell me when this was? I'm just curious to know if attitudes are moving in one direction or another. As I say, my experience was 20 years ago, so hardly current.
@johntimbrell3 ай бұрын
@@newsheridanclub My experience was over a period of 20 years from the 1980s. The Cornish people in my experience still have a love hate relationship with 'foreigners' from the other side of the Tamar but my assessment of the May Day celebration, or perhaps better described as observance, was that it still was just more than re-enacting the past. I once went from Padstow's May day to watch Helston's Furry Dance. I found that that was just a re-enactment of a past tradition which is had no relevance today. This is similar to most other re-creations of the past. After watching your summary of the History of Padstow's May Day I have formed this opinion. The supposed meaning of the present day version of the song is a conglomeration of past events which meant something to the people at the time but mean very little to the present day people who sing it today. This is not an unusual phenomenon. Most people who sing hymns in Churches rarely know the meaning of the words they sing. I asked a devout regular churchgoer if they still said the Apostle's creed each Sunday. She said no and I believe that she did not know what the Apostles creed was even though she chanted it each Sunday. My assessment is that the people of Padstow are a bit remote from other centres and become somewhat insular and close knit over each winter. The 1st of May is when they 'allow' foreigners into their lives because they need them to survive. They sing THEIR song which has no meaning to the present day singers except that it is THEIR song and the meaning has little importance. One difference between the Padstow event and other such events where the meanings of celebratory songs are sung is that there is no controller in overall charge of the group. I'm thinking of our churches or our state where hymns and Land of Hope and Glory are sung. at the last night of the Proms. From what I have written one might assess that I am being cynical. I am not. I think that there is value in communities being close and caring for each other. That is the good side of human nature. Dare I state what I see as the bad side? It is that the people of this country do not stop the controllers using our taxes to fund wars that are no concern to us the ordinary people. Our controllers are making huge sums to line their pockets to support arms manufacturers who send the weapons to such as Ukraine and Israel.

I believe that the common ancestor of the Egyptian kings and Europeans lived in the Caucasus about 9,500 years ago,” Scholz said. - About 7 thousand years ago, his direct descendants settled throughout Europe. And someone got to Egypt and became a pharaoh. It turns out, however, that, starting with his great-great-grandfathers, the ancestors of Tutankhamun, and he himself, were persons of Caucasian nationality. Maybe Georgians, Ossetians, Dagestanis. Or even Chechens

I have just returned from Tate Britain after seeing the Sargent exhibition. I was overjoyed when I noticed the Rex Whistler mural had re opened after it had been closed due to someone noticing a small black boy in the painting that they believed had racist intent. Inside were two huge screens where they played a drama depicting Whistler being interviewed by a zealous women accusing him of racism and questioning his reasons for including such scenes. At the end the commentator accused Whistler of joining the war to seek fame and as we know was subsequently killed by a mortar bomb. I assume that the sole purpose of this film was to destroy his reputation and legacy. The mural was poorly lit and difficult to appreciate and I guess was intended by the Tate to ensure that no one enjoyed the artwork. We seem to have reached the depths of a new low when such a distinguished artist has been cancelled due to someone’s warped belief that this 20 year old man had any evil intent.

The Hanoverians All wore uniforms that looked very much like British Colors except for the Hanoverian regiment Von Muller Dragoons, which wore White coats with sky Blue turn backs, as pictured in plate #102, William Y. Carman’s book, “military Uniforms in Color”, The book illustrates 8 regiments 4 from each side that were probably present at in that front. I see you have an image of the same regiment, carman’s book shows a Horse Grenade, in Miter Cap Blazoned with the cartouche of Hanover. have we forgotten that their used to be a wreath of Red & White roses around the Regimental number like III for the HM East Anglicanicans or Buffs.

Disgusting to see him here, joking around. He clearly didn't understand why he was in prison and obviously he is a notorious liar. He wasn't "just a little bit" behind on taxes (read the news coverage about it and make your own judgement). He also, to this point, still owes me money. I once bought something at his Fulham shop and never received it. He gave me some weird excuses a couple of times why it wasn't ready, then, all of a sudden I couldn't reach him anymore and the shop was closed. After a bad Google review, he reached out and suggested to refund the money. I removed the review, but never got the money - he never replied again.
