"The very word "secrecy" is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths. . ." Hard to argue with this man's words especially when we view our current state of affairs worldwide.

Same requirements to become a Freemason. The Shriners are probably best known for their ripping around during parades in Go Carts.

I truly appreciate this video!! My husband and I were having a conversation about my use of the word "flat iron." I was referring to a hair straightening iron; he thought I was talking about a clothing iron. With a little research, I found that older clothing irons were called "flat irons," which made me very curious about what type of clothing iron wouldn't be flat... Some further searching, and I found this video! You've answered all my questions!!

I first saw the original 16 mm copy of this film when it was played for the supervisors in the General Motors Scarborough Van Plant in the late 1970's. Apparently it was only a short time before that showing that the film was "re-discovered" buried at the back of a Steelcase desk that a North Plant salaried employee had used before his retirement. Yes, it was essentially "M.I.A." right up to that time. What an excellent time capsule of 1937 G.M. Oshawa it is.

Very well done. Nice documentation of an important part of human history - recording images of life made available to common people, not just artists.

Australia. I imagine that most people of the world, used chamber pots until the mid 1900's. We still had an outhouse in Brisbane in the early 1960's. The dunny cart men, ran up the driveways early, every monday morning, with an empty can on their shoulders, took our large metal cans from the outhouse and replaced it with a fresh one. In winter, we always had a bucket in the bathroom for night pee. It was filled with water in the mornings and thrown onto the garden. It's not that long ago given the stretch of time on our planet, that indoor toilets are the go in first world countries. Chamber pots rock.

James Henry was a brother of Thomas Henry senior. James married Nancy Ellis daughter of Squire William Ellis of Hespeler. William Ellis was appointed the first Magistrate of Waterloo County by Colonel Beasley of Dundurn Castle. Squire Ellis along with Magistrate Ferguson were involved with the formation of Guelph and Wellington County. Ellis first held court in a building near the Guelph City Hall which had a roof but no walls. The second Court house was in the red brick building across from Harveys on Gordon Street. The first stone Court House burned down and was rebuilt across from the Performing Arts Centre near St. Georges Church. Rod and Alan Blair renovated the Existing Court house in the 1980s. They were both decendants of James Henry and Squire Ellis. The Ellis family legacy is Ellis Creek from Hespeler to Mary Hill through Guelph, Ellis Road and Ellis Church. Maple Grove Road is named after their farm

Make sure when buying adapters for the ends of the 120 film reels that you buy strong ones- like literally ones with “strong” in their description- the reason being that you (like me) will get halfway through shooting your roll of film, having a great time, pleased with the subjects you chose to shoot- and the film will stop reeling with the winding reel. What’s happening is the resistance is building on the reels and suddenly the cheap, soft, wax-like plastic on those adapters gives way and won’t reel any further. Now you’re in a position where if you have a darkroom, I guess you can salvage your roll of film, but if not, you’ve gotta pull open the camera (ruining your film) and start over. The cameras are inexpensive and available, cleaning and fixing them isn’t too hard, but there’s a bunch of grifters out there (because of course) who want to try and cash in on your interest in trying out an antique camera, while selling you garbage. Be careful buying those adapters- it’ll save you film and money.

I had a Kodak camera in the 1960s that used flash cubes. As a joke, one year, I saved my use flush cubes and hang them on the Christmas tree as ornaments. They actually looked pretty good. I wish I had saved one of them as a souvenir.

Our local IOOF cemetery has over 60 "zinkies" and it's a small municipal cemetery with about 2500 graves. The largest/tallest one is about 7 feet tall and they go down in size from there. I had read that they're kind of rare and in the average American and Canadian cemetery there's just 2 or so of them. So I've known for awhile that this cemetery is kind of special with over 60 of these beautiful works of art really. They're the cleanest stones in there and they're all over 100 years old too...

The introduction to the box brownie is plain WRONG. The first camera illustrated, now called the Brownie No.1, was NOT pre loaded with 100 exposure film but used a conventional 117 daylight loaded roll film with backing paper and numbers showing thru a red window at the back, as did all Brownies for many years after. The camera illustrated is correct, but the narration is not, seemingly confusing it with much earlier Kodak cameras, which were not called by the Brownie name. The film used (later numbered 117,), and the camera, produced square photos, 6 exposures per roll of film, 6x6cms or 2&¼ " square, setting a format still in use today March 2023. The Brownie No.2 camera with a 6x9 cms. format introduced 120 film, also still in use as at 2023.

Urine or "chamber lye" as it was called was usually kept separate. It was collected and used the same way we use liquid bleach for whitening clothes. Chamber pots were filled with water before use and some ash from the fireplace was sprinked in to control odor.

Sprinkling vinegar onto cuffs/collars would make the flutes stay fast. Especially delicate fabrics. Starch did not work with corrugated fluting irons.
