In the time before indoor plumbing, what might the 'bathroom' have looked like in Henry House? Join Lisa as she chats about life in the Victorian era home before indoor plumbing

Still in use. I picked up a couple Hobo women and they had a plastic salad bowl on the outside of their pack. When setting up a tent behind buildings, they would put a plastic Walmart bag in the bowl, do their business in the privacy of their tent, then throw away the bag.

Australia. I imagine that most people of the world, used chamber pots until the mid 1900's. We still had an outhouse in Brisbane in the early 1960's. The dunny cart men, ran up the driveways early, every monday morning, with an empty can on their shoulders, took our large metal cans from the outhouse and replaced it with a fresh one. In winter, we always had a bucket in the bathroom for night pee. It was filled with water in the mornings and thrown onto the garden. It's not that long ago given the stretch of time on our planet, that indoor toilets are the go in first world countries. Chamber pots rock.

Urine or "chamber lye" as it was called was usually kept separate. It was collected and used the same way we use liquid bleach for whitening clothes. Chamber pots were filled with water before use and some ash from the fireplace was sprinked in to control odor.

thanks for that info...I like the idea of the ash. I will try that. Yes, I still use one at night. Good for the garden.

Why didn’t they just stumble out the back door and pee on the hedges like normal people?
