Hi, just come across your channel on my R230 Sl55 research, I'm thinking of potentially getting one. This was a good video (although a bit scary!) but I have some questions for you: What is one honestly meant to do about the lack of parts available? I.e. if I were to buy a SL55 and something went wrong, then am I literally stuck with the car being off the road for months on end? Is an all round good mechanic (but not Merc specialist) able to get hold of parts or would that then fall on me to find and supply? He will have a parts source but I don't know how that would work with this car. Any SL55 specific things I should be worried about? The water leaks is pretty rubbish, I don't have a garage space for one so that took me by surprise. Thanks!

The lack of parts atm is a worry, but it’s a case of hunting down the parts when we need them, abit like looking after a classic car I suppose. I am hoping Mercedes get the act together and get the ball rolling on these common parts tbh.

Hi mate. Great video. Just a quick question..what merc model would you recomend reliability wise from that period? (00’s). Also, you reckon is better to invest in a R129 rather than R230? Thanks
@sprautosКүн бұрын
I do like the 230 sl it’s just a shame mb seem to lacking support for them, if I was to have a 129 I would buy one of the last ones with a m113 engine. 230 better car, more expensive to maintain hard to get parts. 129 pretty solid reliable car if you buy a facelift model

I m looking more for a manual 270cdi because of maintenance and diesel prices in Portugal, i do monthly 6/7 k km 80% fully loaded with job gear . W 211 chassis wich one u recomend engine wise to be has bulletproof . Please Congrats for u job ❤

The older stright 6 Cdi was more reliable than the v6 I would say, which is possible to get in the 211

I just watched Car Wizards video on his wife’s SL500. He fixed the loose baffles with long nosed pliers, he got them into the tank in situ, he just grabbed the loose baffles and twisted them against the tank to essentially spring load them back in place. A quick and free solution to fix. Longevity wise 🤞🤞😂

Hi, just find your video, very nice and clean work. I own a W211 E320 with this engine, and i have que same problem as shown at 1:25 but at 1900 to 2200rpm and sometimes only above 3300rpm. Its not always present, for exemple if i reset the computer i have no problem for about 100km... The flap motor is brand new but not the plastic parts on the inlet manifold, but the flaps moves well. The EGR is new as its pressure sensor. No fault exept the exaust back pressure sensor. After watching your video i think that my problem is with the turbo but i am not sure, and this part is very expensive (3250€ here) so... Do anyone had the same problem as me ? Do you think it could be the turbo ? Im struggling with this for month now, seen 3 mercedes dealers about it and they didn't fixed it at all (but sure took my money)
@sprautos4 күн бұрын
sounds like a turbo fault for sure, and also with you have a back pressure sensor fault which is a good indicator, for a cheaper fix you could replace the turbo actuator on its own, part numbers are very specific on those things so you have to be carful. good luck.

Would you say the R129 are better than these overall at all?
@sprautos7 күн бұрын
erm yes they could be considered more reliable with less tech, if you can get a facelift 129 with a m113. the 230 was a huge uplift in all ways over the 129 pretty much a completely different car

The wheel issue is common with all manufacturers who use wide wheels with the inside unsuspended, low profile tyres exaggerate this issue. Never had a fail on my CLK but did on my Vauxhall and Volvo. Springs fail on all cars but plenty available from after market manufacturers. My 2006 CLK is fabulous, but remember cheap to buy now but you are servicing a car which new cost over £40K. I’ve been offered £10K for mine but it’s not for sale.

Had one of those batteries fail once, the good thing is it was covered by the warranty. The even better thing was it meant the stop/start didn't work. The bad thing is after replacement the stop/start worked again.

Frankly I'm shocked to the bone. I own a SL 65 AMG (2004) and have to realize by this video that if one of these critical part break down my car becomes kind of worthless because Mercedes-Benz doesn't provide spare-parts for these models that were sold in the zig-thousands. This is really shocking more so because Mercedes-Benz is master of praising its legacy when it comes to the SL series of cars. I can't express how disappointed I am as a loyal customer of this brand owing 4 cars (S 63 AMG. E 500 4matic and Smart BRABUS). Mercedes - how dare you?

Complete agree! It’s a joke, plenty of Sl on the road and they used to support the Sl models continued into classics, it just isn’t good enough.

Howdy! I saw this video pop up in my feed and thought I'd check out this buyers guide. I also wanted to ask a question concerning Mercedes. I have a W16303ML500 w/the M113 and I put in 6 hours of polishing today. It's 20 years old and the black paint looked horrid. It's looks much better but still has some scratches and rock chips that need touching up. This is the first MB I've owned so I'm a bit green but I worked as an auto tech during my college years. I've heard that after 75k miles or 121k kilometers we should change from 0w-40 to 5w-40 motor oil. What do you think about this change?
@sprautos18 күн бұрын
5w 40 229.5 spec is a good option for this engine

you are correct on the 2k a year. that is what i tell my clients as well. I would say that car should be sold for around 1000 to a mechanic.
