Great video! I actually tried the packdown already 3 times. 1st time: got sea sick during the packdown. 2nd time: it was way too windy, 30+ knots, smacking the wing with the paddle on to my barracuda, fighting oncoming steep bumps, almost impossible to jibe. 3rd time: everything went well, but found out that the extra 10 lbs on my back changes the balance, popup, pumping and turning in a big way. Of the 10 pounds, half of it is water, so I measured. So for sure I need a better way to pack down my wing. Your video might motivate me to try again with the packdown improvements.

Glad to her you are experimenting with it! It definitely adds weight and the paddle ups are harder as a result but with some more practice you will soon get very proficient at it!

Great Video ! I still dont understand what is the difference between shimming and moving mast. If for example my nose wants to go down , why shim it positive and not move mast forward? Thank you in advance!
@hydrofoilacademy
@hydrofoilacademy 5 күн бұрын
Shimming has an impact on lift and drag. Moving the mast does not. If you want to make the gear more efficient or slow it down and produce more lift, this is when you would shim. Most people shim negatively, to take drag away and make the foil faster. I would move the mast forward to compensate for the reduced front foot pressure in this case. Hope that helps.

Hi thanks for your review, if we check wind range in in North website it seems that Ultra has a better lowend compared to the Mode pro, do you have different feeling? I have Mode pro 4.2 and 5.5. and I can confirm those ranges
@hydrofoilacademy
@hydrofoilacademy 11 күн бұрын
My experience is that the mode pro has a better wind range than the Ultra. I think this is partly due to the fact that I’ve been using the Ultra with small foils to maximise the speed. Don’t get me wrong, the wind range is good with the Ultra but it’s shifted up towards winder conditions. Hope that helps.

Honestly. You are the best reviewer out there. Hands down. Nobody speaks that openly about the cons. And you have no problem stating what you don’t like in a very open manner despite, I assume, being a North dealer. You are the person I would buy gear from, because what I get from you it’s the pros and cons which will allow me to decide whether that is a suitable wing for my style. Thank you. Lots of respect for guys like you.

Hey @Stefano, thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it. I want to be as open as possible with products. The reality is that they are not for everyone. Every product has pros and disadvantages but I’m always cognitive of the fact that someone has poured hours and hours of their time into designing and producing it. The last thing I want to do is disrespect that. It’s always a fine line, and I hope I got that right. Thanks again for your support and I’ll continue to do this type of review. 🤙

When you say - you preferred mainly 5.5, what were wind conditions /how many knots/. And for your weight, how many knots you think you'd need to feel comfortable with 4.8?
@hydrofoilacademy
@hydrofoilacademy 12 күн бұрын
For the 5.5 I was comfortable in 20kts down to around 12-15kts. It’s worth noting that I was on a small (HA650) foil which didn’t help the low end. The 4.8 and the HA650 was a bit gutless in 12-15kts.

Great Review. 1) Do you feel the extra weight when carving 2) When you use it for dw do you use it also to go upwind first 3) How long does it take to put it on and off your foil ? 4) What is the maintenance needed? Thanks
@hydrofoilacademy
@hydrofoilacademy 22 күн бұрын
Yes, you do feel some extra weight but with the max battery (the biggest one) it’s very well balanced. Takes a few sessions to get used to it. Yes, I do power upwind first then DW. This eats up battery power but it’s a really good way of doing it. Maintenance is very minimal to be honest. Just wash and dry after each use. I can now put in on from scratch in about 15mins. But when it’s left on the mast and already taped it’s a matter of minutes. The first time took me much longer than this.

@hydrofoilacademy
@hydrofoilacademy 26 күн бұрын
Hi Friz, Thanks for the kind words. A 75cm mast is easier to paddle up as there is less drag. But an 82 will be better in the pumps. So for Downwind, the 82 will be better but for flat water paddle ups, the 75. Hope that helps

Thank you for this video! I have a question for you: I kiteboard, surf, and wakeboard, but I've yet to wing, and my wife is a complete novice/beginner (no watersport experience). I'm trying to figure out a setup that will work for both of us to learn on. I know it's not ideal, but I'm trying to save some money. I'm 6'0 190lbs (86kg) and she is 5'4" 120lbs (55kg)... This is the setup I have in mind: Board 90L, Foil 72-75, Front wing 1850, wing 5.0... Conditions at our spot are deep water and wind 10-20 knots. Thank you in advance

Great video! I just purchased an HA980 for winging and I’m wondering which tail you think would pair nicely with that for winging swell and connecting bumps? I’ve only ridden it once so far and used the 235 flow. I’ve not tried any shims with it yet, but I was thinking of trying a blue one to get a little more glide. Before purchasing the HA980 I was using MA1225 (and MA1000 in higher winds). Thanks!

Assist max or Assist slim. I cannot get my head around compromising a board designers efforts to maximise the hydrodynamic efficiency by then strapping a rectangular bulky box to the bottom of an efficient structure. I am riding an Assist plus on my KT Dragonfly installed behind my back foot. Still seems to me to be the better option, providing you are using bigger boards?

I guess there is so much power it gets through that drag, however, I do agree with you. I think the next Gen will have everything incorporated into the board (check out the Flitelab). I have the max and only use this with the biggest battery.

I think an inflatable DW board is ok for winging but to paddle up? I’m not sure. I think it will be really hard to get the surface released with just paddle power. In the early stages it will be great for balance and paddling skills but I fear you will get frustrated before long. Trust me, it’s hard enough without having the breaks on. SS1300 is good. 👍

Thanks for the video, your advice is very precious and essential to approach this discipline in the correct way. I am 54 years old, I weigh 82 kg and I am a sportsman. I started learning about foiling with the kite 3 years ago, then the following year I learned the wing. I currently have the Armstrong foil ma 1225, 1000, 800 fusolage of 60 and a performance mast of 865. As you recommend, I will purchase the APF 1675. Do you think it is also appropriate to reduce the length of the mast from 865 to 795. If so, what are the advantages? If I started with the 865 tree, what additional difficulties would I encounter? Thanks for everything. Philip
@hydrofoilacademy
@hydrofoilacademy Ай бұрын
Hi Philip, Thanks for the kind words, it’s really appreciated. Look, the longer mast is just going to be harder to paddle up as there is more drag in the water at the start (harder to paddle faster). That being said, the APF 1675 is is such a lifty wing that it should be fine. Personally, I wouldn’t go buying a new mast just yet. Try the 865 and see how you go. Hope that helps.

@hydrofoilacademy
@hydrofoilacademy 2 ай бұрын
I think the length is one of the most important factors. As the new boards (standard DW boards, not talking about the DWP boards) are longer you can get away with slightly less volume. So for the old 121L you could get the new 116L and the old 108L the 106L.
