It holds a permanent place of honor in the James Bond cannon. And of course has the one & only George Martin producing. Interesting backstory (thanks, Wikipedia): Originally, producer Saltzman wanted Shirley Bassey (another Bond theme icon) or Thelma Houston to perform it instead of Wings. Martin said McCartney would allow the song to be used in the movie only if Wings was to perform the song in the opening credits. The recording contract specified that McCartney would "perform the title song under the opening titles". Good move!

I'm imagining. The Beatles did not break up in the 70s. And they were back in tour and they're playing it there in 1976 on stage together.

This is my absolute favorite song ever! I'm retired now but, when I was working I ALWAYS gave the other fellows Hell! Because I was their greatest employee so I was hated and envied so they were always trying to get me fired! Well I retired at an early age of 57 and they are ALL going to work til they are 90 years old!😂...and the company actually asked to stay but, I said, No, thank you, very much!" Now I am an extremely happy, retired millionaire....smiling every day especially whenever I go to the bank!❤

Wonder if Paul is part Egyptian or something who knows you’d have to trace the lineage back thousands of years and we don’t have the technology to do that

While shooting Papillon in Jamaica, Hoffman met Paul McCartney who was vacationing in Montego Bay. One evening, Hoffman invited McCartney to dinner and challenged him to write a song "about anything". Since painter Pablo Picasso had just died, Hoffman requested that McCartney compose a song around Picasso's dying words ("Drink to me, drink to my health. You know I can't drink anymore"). McCartney created a demo on the spot and the song, "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)", appeared on Wings' 1973 album "Band On the Run".

This is a perfect example of what John called granny music, while in effect it's a throwback to the music of the 1920's. And what's not to love about this wonderfully well crafted and written song. Paul could cover all music; Coming Up was a fantastic song. Macca u r the greatest.
