My 1978 9th grade Biology and fishing club teacher played this as a science class lesson. It was TU's mission to educate on catch and release and it worked for me as I also took up flyfishing and tying that same year. What a splendid production and videography!

How do you do that on the front of a flats skiff without rocking the boat?
@ScientificAnglersАй бұрын
The primary motion should be in your upper body which will not cause much rocking.

Thanks for uploading this. Very useful. Agree that the flyline would break well before the braided loop regardless of where nail knots are placed (but good tips below to make them even stronger!). I'm surprised only 20 likes after 4 years ...

Amazing vintage vid. He was ahead of his time. Even basic euro nymphing techniques he already applied. Forwarded it to other (beginner) fly fishers and they love it too. The simplicity of the flies he is using shows there is no need too overcomplicating tying, as these are patterns that a novice tier can apply. Kuddo's 👍

Contrary to popular belief you do not need a two handed rod to catch steelhead as Lani demonstrates.

I use to care about the hatch until I found out they will take any fly that looks like a bug even if it is a bug they never seen before
@ScientificAnglers4 ай бұрын
There's nothing wrong with trying different flies, until you find that one fish that is keying on very specific cripples! (almost certain to be the bug that's NOT in your box)

Hi! I've fished since I was a kid but always wanted to find out what the breaking strain of various line weights is. For example, how much weight will it take before, say, an average 6 weight or 10 weight line snaps? Why I'm asking is because I never wanted to test it out myself, obviously, seeing as they cost an arm and a leg. Looking forward to your response ~ thanks for your kind consideration.
@zeph64394 ай бұрын
It's Ok, I googled it up - thanks anyway. Strength -- all line cores are built to be much stronger than the heaviest leader tippets that are likely to be used with them. For example: a 2 or 3 weight line will normally break at about 20 lbs.; standard 4 to 8 weight line are around 30-pound test, a heavy saltwater line core may test over 75 lbs.
@ScientificAnglers4 ай бұрын
Hey great question but also difficult since we use a number of different core materials which will vary in strength between lighter weight lines and heavy weight lines. There isn't a direct correlation between line weight and breaking weight on a fly line.
@zeph64394 ай бұрын
@@ScientificAnglers I see - the reason I'm asking is that I have a T20 sinking line and want to attach it to a length of cannibalized 9 weight line which was damaged near the forward taper. I want to use the thinner running line and make up my own shooting head as it were, and wanted to get an idea of whether the idea was viable, seeing as one of my target species is albacore. Thanks for getting back to me!

A lot of KZfaq flyfishers have videos with zero commentary; they don't even want you to know where they are fishing for fear you might want go there too. I push the stop button on those videos. Totally boring. Some KZfaq flyfishers think it's all about them. Not quite, it's all about the sport and the folklore of flyfishing for steelhead.
@henryhueffed49046 ай бұрын
I totally agree. Lani Waller was and still is the original rock star of fly fishing for steelelhead. A lot of people on KZfaq think they are the hot shots of flyfishing for steelhead, however, they are just playing in cover bands.
