Don't hesitate when sharing your own thoughts because that's what most of us experience: there's not such a big difference, if any, between certain hifi gear. Most of all, a lot of studies confirm this. So you not noticing anything different is actually a huge input into the hifi debate. Kudos!

In my opinion, both CXN and CXA are popular and acceptable products and they needed this upgrade to remain in the competition, and of course, new buyers are the target, not people like me who have the previous version of these two products. I am looking to upgrade my system and waiting for a product between the CX and Edge series.

Crappy plastic binding posts, but then it is made in China. Way too expensive for chinese made and there's too much competition at that price that has much better build quality - Atoll or starters. But if I was getting a Chinese built Amp, Musical Fidelity or Primare make better/sound better at this price. If it wasn't built in China and was better made, I'd be tempted. It's great looking. Oh, and zero tone controls on modern amps absolutely grinds my gears too. It's beyond infuriating. I keep reverting back to using a very cheap and cheerful Onkyo A9050 amp (cost about €450 off memory) simply because it has really good tone control and a direct over drive button to immediately switch off if needed. It's an absolute joy being able to simply dial a tone to suit anything I play that benefits from a little more treble or reduced bass. I find it actually incredulous and infuriating that the vast amount of amps nowadays don't include them. It's not a deal breaker, and of course I could add in a Schiit audio EQ, but why the hell should I need to add in yet another box with all the additional cabling and power paraphernalia JUST so I can tweak tone. Its so damn annoying.

Where did you get the sensitivity value from? Not that these are a hard speaker to drive, but Wharfedale quote them at 87dB sensitivity, not 90dB. This is direct from the Wharfedale website (Australian one for me). Sensitivity (2.83V @ 1M ) = 87dB Don't let that detract from my enjoyment of your review though. It's a great review. Some rooms work better with a bookshelf speaker on a stand than the full floor mount speakers, but I understand why you'd say might as well get the floor mounts. My situation is such that the floor mounts would not work, but the stand mount does. You can get other stands at lower prices that work really well also, just be aware the Evo 4.2's are a large Bookshelf / Stand mount speaker

I've had generally bad luck with liking speakers whose mid-bass driver is any bigger than 5.5". I know that sounds like a sweeping generalization, but so far it's held up. What's the word on these getting sloppy when the bottom-end content starts to get complicated?
@0102studio
@0102studio 10 күн бұрын
You know, I used to be the opposite of you, where I didn’t like small driver speakers. So maybe I’m not the best to answer, but the sloppy bottom end I think was previous generations of this. The driver on this is taut and detailed. I didn’t find it to sloppy in any way.

@CinemaDemocratica
@CinemaDemocratica 10 күн бұрын
@@0102studio My first-ever audiophile purchase was a three-way design by KEF called the C-80 (c.1985). But I have gravitated toward two-way designs as I've gotten older because the crossover is so much simpler and thus puts so much less strain on the signal reproduction -- but I'm open to anything! I live in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and I'm planning to sneak over to Bangkok for 24 hours in early September to do some serious comparison shopping. Right now my six finalists are these, the Acoustic Energy AE 309, the Amphion Argon 3s, the Opera Prima 2015 Bookshelf, the AirPulse A300 Pro (by Edifier), and the KEF R3 Meta. There's obviously huge variability in both the design philosophy and the price of these six, so more explanation is probably merited, but the short version is that these seem to be the best choices based on review buzz, specific adjectives used, and use-case. Listening habits are low to extremely low volume, almost exclusively "hotel penthouse bar jazz" (piano trios and quartets in the style of Bill Evans and Sonny Clark and Oscar Peterson). Room is poured concrete, 315cm across the front, 600cm deep, with floor-to-ceiling curtains at both ends, one of which conceals a glass-door wall, and the other of which conceals a pass-through to the kitchen. Two sources, one a Hiby R4 DAP, and the other my PC. Amps available are a NAIM XS2, an Exposure 3010, and an SMSL AO-300.

Marantz Cinema 70 is basically what you want. But in reality after listening to this a soundbar is what your basically needing since you don't want the things a receiver brings. A receiver needs to be big for the power supply to run all the speakers with decent power. Everything you say you want is basically a soundbar.

I just watched your review and for me who has been thinking of replacing CXA81+CXN V2 with EVO 150 for some time, your explanation is very useful and thank you for that. Apart from the very beautiful modern appearance and many abilities, I I read many reviews and Bench Tests about this product and they all emphasized on the high quality and ability of this product. The point that was mentioned in these reviews, apart from its very low noise and distortion, is the good damping factor of this device. 250 value for EVO vs 100 for CXA81. What I learned is that the higher the value of this factor, the greater the ability to run larger speakers, speakers with higher power or lower efficiency. It provides better and easier. The only thing that I would have liked to change in this device was the upgrade of the DAC to a higher model in DeLorean Edition. I hope you keep this device as a reference.

No problem, L&R preout from AvR to the aux input of the EVO 150. Then in the StreamMagic app, enable Home Theater bypass on that input. And in my setup either the Cmabridge remote or the Marantz remote powers both products on and off simultaneously, no trigger required!

AV receiver (2014) I'm looking to upgrade this (lovely) machine with a similar sized device and technologically up to date, but indeed also in NL one can actually just choose the Marantz Cinema-70s. There's nothing else on the market. So please Yamaha, NAD, Technics, Onkyo etc. please shrink your AV-receivers. Also please ditch the rather outdated monochrome dot matrix displays 😉

@@0102studio 50 watts is more than enough power for most people ... on the right speakers it can get right freaking loud. In fact most reasonable listening occurs at 2 and 3 watt levels with the rest being used for transients and peaks. My point was that the TPA3255 mini-amps I've worked with all seem a little anemic on lollipop speakers and do much better on the towers. For example: I'm using an Aiyima A07 in my main system on a 36 volt supply. This gives me about 75 watts of power. On my desktop speakers it's kinda "meh" but when I let it loose on my Pioneer towers it's like "Holy Crap" good.

Interesting review. I also find most of Fosi audio stuff to be good but not worth writing home about. There's something just "not quite right" about their design work. I've delved into the their TB10D to the level of doing a design critique and found a few things they can do better ... most pronouncedly keeping the output filter coils away from the big chip's heatsink. They tend to interact rather noticeably. Modifying the heat sink to create some clearance got rid of that NQR sound problem. Other mods brought out the better in the amp. Resulting in far better sound. Another shortcoming is the use of NE5532 op-amps. Not the best choice, but dirt cheap and readily available. On amps that allow chip flipping, I generally sub in RC4558 or TL072 chips with much better results. (the replacements are less than a dollar each) I haven't done a deep dive with the BT20A Pro, and don't plan to. But you should know that the TPA3255 chip, when properly implemented is capable of sound that will rival almost any decent stereo amplifier. Other than these small mini-amps you will find this chip in studio monitors, AV amplifiers, PA Amplifiers and even a few mid-range HiFi amps. Volume match them, do an AB test and you would be unable to tell which is playing. The key phrase here is "When Properly Implemented" which many of these mini-amps do not do. Do a side by side with an Aiyima A07 (original design) ... you'll get the idea.

I also really like the fact the Rotel has balanced inputs for a future DAC upgrade, if or when needed. If I ever replace it, it will probably be for Rotel separates. I'm also happy with the HT bypass and triggers, because if I do replace it, then it will find a home in the AV system :) Yeah--the remote and display suck :) But I don't really care about that given how good the amp is overall.

The focal aria 906 k2 limited edition was a direct competitor for the Kef R3 for me, in a listening test, so I'm not surprised the new focal aria speakers are very good as well. I'm going to repeat the listening test this year with Kef R3 meta's, and hopefully the new focal aria as well. Although the WAF for floorstanders has turned out to be quite decent, it's starting to end as we remodel the living room so I will have to switch to bookshelf speakers, with likely a subwoofer for additional bass. I agree that the colour is pretty stylish on the focal arias. Would fit my room quite well.
