Thank you for this video. For the longest time, I was doing the wrong thing and scratching my head why my ball speed is always so slow - even if I use upper body to push it faster. This just gave me guidance on what I should work on next to up my game.

I prefer teaching a 4 step approach because the 1 extra short step in the beginning tends to throw kids off. 4 steps is a much easier rhythm to get into. I prefer to teach 4 step and then teach 5 step to increase momentum if they want it.

I bowled my first 200 game (207) at age 10 in 1970. At age 15 I averaged 185. Averaged 195-200 in the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. The thing I miss the most is keeping your own score on paper score sheets.

The step that feels the weirdest is the third one. I guess my thinking I have to make it long without being in my head that’s where it feels odd. I’m not sure how to get over this odd feeling other than to just continue doing it and continue watching as it looks good here but it feels odd when I try it

Would there be any firming of the wrist and all or grip at all during this drill. As for we once the arm starts back it looks like a broken branch. I’m not sure where it going wrong for me as far as that goes. The arm swing is my flaw unless I concentrate on keeping it straight 🤷‍♂️

My father managed a bowling center and I pretty much grew up in one. I loved the wood lanes and the smell of lacquer when the lanes were refinished every summer. The sound they made when you threw a ball done them. Today it's all urethane lanes and so many ball choices you have no idea what to buy.

This is exactly my thought for the last 25 years... I remember bowling in the 1970's where on a 16 5-man team leage not one person had a 600 triple... About 1980 in a 20 lane house I had the 2nd highest average for all the men in every leage with 192, with the #1 spot having 193....Bestween sythetic lanes, oil patterns, and new bowling balls they have made conditions so easy it's boring to watch any more with a strike on almost every shot...How many bowling alleys have gone out of business??? Lanes I used to bowl at is now a car dealership.... Bo Burton is telling the truth....thanks for the video

I disagree bowling did not loose millions of league bowlers because bowling got to easy! It is well known what happened! Damn it! Bowling was loved because it was a great fun thing to do. Then the computer age came and huge game rooms came then the game room moved right into the bedroom of all these kids, and now we have a huge problem with fat kids! Making bowing harder will be the end of league bowling imo!

I just got back into bowling after a 25 year absence. In my last year of league bowling (1997) I averaged 185 and was considered a “good” bowler. Now, 185 is mediocre at best. My equipment was outdated, so I bought two new balls and am just focused on making good shots. At 68 years old, there’s no way I can physically compete with the young guys, some of whom are averaging 220 and better. What really struck me was how unorthodox many of the younger players are. When I was coming up, I watched text book guys like Dave Davis and Earl Anthony (I’m a lefty) and developed an approach similar to Earl. My righty friends watched and emulated Dick Weber and Nelson Burton. It seems like finesse has given way to strictly power! I’ll see how it all shakes out 22 weeks from now! 🎳

Back in the 70's and 80's the bowlers used to complain about low scores. They wouldn't practice so they got what they deserved. I was told as a kid if you even saw a 300 shot once every 5 years you were lucky. Back then it was front page news in the evening paper, picture and all, and you were awarded a diamond ring from the ABC. It was a big deal! But now everybody averages 220 and the local lanes post around two 300's a month on average now. No more picture in the newspaper front page, no more roaring crowd at the lanes watching a real 300 actually happen. Nowadays you might get a "nice-game" or a pat on the back then it's quickly forgotten. And they handed out so many 300 rings that you have to pay for yours now and you are only awarded a single ring as a "lifetime" award. The latest rings look plastic and cheap like they came out of one of those toy-vending machines. Put the lanes back to the way they were and all those hot shot 220's would be back in the 150's where they belong. As a 196 shooter, I shot 6, 300 games before the mid 80's on real wood lanes with real wood pins and an AMF Angle and a Colombia Yellow Dot and original Lind's shoes. Now they are planning on using all plastic pins along with the plastic lanes. Bowling doesn't even sound like bowling anymore. It's a terrible shame. These young punks thing they're hot? Let them try it on the old style lanes where you had to hold a two-board line and do it all night long.

One of the greatest bowling performances I have ever seen was Bo in the 1984 Angle Open. An unparalleled exhibition of accuracy and power with his 16 lb Faball Black Hammer. Burton set a record for a televised four-game pin total with a combined score of 1,050 (278-279-257-236)!

I like it. Nothing easy. No breakdown of the pattern with resin to open up the lane. Just bowl and you better be good all the time. And most important, no ball reps or coaches to tell you how to bowl. You are all alone out there. How it should always be.

I’m all for this, even though I can’t make it to Detroit. The one issue I have, is that the Skill ball needs lower oil volumes. Use that ball on your typical league a house shot and you’re handicapping yourself, no?
@gbkillerb
@gbkillerb 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Joe, On a typical house shot with 24+ mL of oil, yes. But when the heads get fried, or even just for spares, a SKILL ball can come in handy.

I completely agree with Bo. BUT….if I’m an adult seeking to develop my skills and not rely on an arsenal, but my leagues use far more oil than the Teen Masters, what options do I have? Gary-if you read this, it seems obvious that you had to align the balls you permit with the lower ml amount of oil, or those balls wouldn’t work. So while you’re spot on helping youth develop skills, where does that leave adults who happen to agree with your philosophy and that of Bo and Brian Voss, for that matter? Yes, the game has been dumbed down, but for most of us, it’s the only game in town. If I was to use Teen Masters skill balls in my house shot league, against modern $200 orbs, I’d get slaughtered!
@gbkillerb
@gbkillerb 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Joe! I agree. Using a SKILL ball on 20-35 mL patterns to compete against flaring balls would be akin to taking a knife to a gunfight. But, I will soon be announcing at least one SKILL environment event for adults with cash prizes. Time will tell if there is a market for such a tournament.

Find a bowling establishment that offers a "throwback" league night or some such event. Don't participate in the ones that use modern balls and whatnot. If you can't find one, convince the owner to sound out players and see if there would be an interest in it and, if so, form one. You might be surprised at the amount of people who would jump through hoops to get on that league.

These steps works great if you are bowling straight up, but what if you are playing deep inside and have to square up to your target and throw the ball at more of an angle?

I grew up on Bo Burtons advice. The best was putting a folded towel under the arm pit to keep the swing close to the body. And it shouldn't fall out until the follow through.
