My first wife and I spent our honeymoon on Mackinac Island and enjoyed two nights at the Grand hotel. We spent the next three nights at one of the smaller but beautiful hotels down near the harbor. I highly recommend anyone visiting the island if only for one day. The lack of vehicles and the sounds of the horse-drawn carriages he is very soothing

Hi thanks for the great info on mounting the X3. Do you use it with the Lens Protector? If you recall, can you say how much ice accumulated on it in the light icing you experienced, did the image degrade much? Have you considered using the cage mount for a stronger connection to the ball head?
@GrantBaker
@GrantBaker Күн бұрын
No I don’t use the lens protector. They just stick on and I don’t trust that at over 200mph indicated airspeed plus they degrade the image quality some. I didn’t get too much ice, maybe 1/8” at the most and the camera had already stopped recording on that flight. It would have certainly degraded the image significantly though. I have considered a cage, but the one that I bought with the camera (and most other available) don’t have any parts that go all the way across the camera. They just wrap a bit around the edge which doesn’t seem as secure to me. I did find one that did enclose it more fully but it was sketchy quality.

Thanks for another great video! Do you prefer Pilatus Pc-12 over TBM 960? TBM has autoland system, is cheaper and faster!
@GrantBaker
@GrantBaker 9 күн бұрын
Depends on the mission. The emergency autoland is an awesome feature! The TBM can’t carry as much, so for missions where the TBM has to make a fuel stop and the PC12 doesn’t, the PC12 will get there quicker. And the PC12 cabin is much more spacious and comfortable. I’d choose PC12 most of the time, but I might be a bit biased!😜

Grant once you have touched down. I have heard you say that you use beta more than the toe breaker. Is beta the first detent on the throttle when you retard in reverse
@GrantBaker
@GrantBaker 11 күн бұрын
Beta is between normal and reverse pitch. So when you pull the power lever over the stop, the first bit of movement toward reverse is beta. There’s not another detent for it, just the one normal idle stop.

Hey Grant, love your videos, i have learned a lot about radio calls. Could you do a video sometime about the buttons on the yoke. My boss was a dentist and had a pilatus 20 yrs ago. I took some lessons till i ran out of money. That is why i love the videos, so i can still learn a lot. Stay safe

Good video, Grant. Two questions: 1) What is "beta?" and 2) Can you please explain the purpose of the MOR (manual override) lever. Thank you.
@GrantBaker
@GrantBaker Ай бұрын
The propeller pitch can be reversed so that it pushes instead of pulls to help make landings shorter. Beta is in between normal and reverse pitch. I usually don’t go all the way into reverse on landing, and I also use beta to control taxi speed to avoid riding the brakes too much. The MOR is for emergency use. The fuel controller uses bleed air off the engine. If there’s a malfunction causing the fuel controller to no longer have bleed air, the power control lever will no longer have any effect and the engine will roll back to a very low idle. The MOR allows you to directly control engine power, but you lose some of the protections that the fuel controller normally provides.

Putting a young child in the right seat during landing, was clear pilot error. You handled it with skill and diplomacy, but I could see the light bulb coming on in your head that it would be called a factor if you'd ended up in an incident/accident report.

Yes, burning 200 gallons in a very efficient turboprop to fly to grandma's gets you there faster than burning 25 gallons in a very efficient minivan. That's after allowing for the driving distance to be further. You're getting there 6x as fast, but burning fuel 48x as fast. The advantage of taking a minivan, is that when you get there, you've already got the minivan you're going to need upon arrival. But hey, I've taken easily a thousand business flights and rented hundreds of rental cars, many times on business trips that had less important business than visiting grandma. So, I don't think that all aircraft usage should be for either business or for travel over distances where ground travel is impractical. In the early 1990s, when my kids were young, we took 2 vacations to the same destination (Hilton Head area) at about this distance as this trip, a year or two apart. One involved 5 airline tickets and a rental van. One involved 1.5 days of driving each way in our Suburban, so 2 nights of hotel in transit. We also had the only front-tire blowout I've ever had on a highway, which wasn't fun but didn't cause an accident, just a couple hours waiting at a Sears to have the tire replaced. How much of the high-end expenditures associated with our careers, businesses, and hobbies to expose our kids to, or spoil them with, is a personal decision with no one right answer. Likewise regarding lifestyle/expenditure levels in general. I got away with exposing my kids to some of that without ending up with them feeling entitled, or lusting after it, or making their lives overly money-focused or money-dependent. It's not too different from exposing them to drinking and then not becoming alcoholics. You breathe a sigh of relief when they don't fall into life's traps.
