OMG! I don't think I've ever heard VIC20 produce voice sound before. I had to stop and download Murderise All Humans. Played it on my THEC64 Mini. There is a fake update hack that lets you run VIC20 games. The large robot can delete the switches if he spawns over them!

Do you see a way that the controls could be updated to support a single joystick? E.g. similar to how Citadel on the C64 was done?
@RetroGamerNation
@RetroGamerNation 6 күн бұрын
I think it is a failing that the game did not include a single joystick option. I honestly don't think the game is a less of an experience playing it as a single stick shooter. I don't think the game will be adapted in this way.

Is there a demo version? If the controls could be mapped to keyboard and mouse more people would be able to play.

There are a lot of conservatives in retro gaming but that is not good, since if you keep the old ways you cannot know what your machine is REALLY capable of - not only technically but also audiovisually and stilistically

I was thinking the same thing. The dev streams from a couple of years back were looking good but the project does seem to have stalled all together. Would have been interesting how the controls would have been implememted.

It's an incredible programming achievement to get the Amiga to so closely emulate the PC original, especially with all the particle FX and a superb soundtrack at the same time.
@Leeki85
@Leeki85 7 күн бұрын
While it required an experienced programmer, Amiga hardware is well designed for such graphics. Keep in mind that 1-bit graphics allows to use single bitplane, so you have 5 different layers to work with: 1. Background layer with all static objects. 2. Sprite layer with moving objects. 3. White particles layer. 4. Red pixels. 5. Green pixels or other stuff. Amiga has framebuffer graphics, not tile based like 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. While drawing particles is pretty much impossible on consoles (using small sprites or CPU drawn tiles in memory?), Amiga, Atari ST, PC DOS etc. can handle particle effects way easier than multiple sprites.

I wish someone would/could make an expansion pack for Law of the West. That was one of the most fun games ever made on any system because of the dialog interactions and different ways of scoring points. Eventually, you've tried them all. An expansion pack or construction kit option would have been awesome, especially now in the internet age.

Breadbox is a good idea in principle but I feel charging for an frontend that has very noticeable input lag even in early access seems like something of a joke. How this fancy frontend manages just make C64 emulation look like a difficult task I don't know and it's minimum requirements seem to suggest it is currently really poorly optimised. It's a nice idea but I can't see too many people using it beyond curiosity.

I was really surprised that Breadbox required such high spec machines to run smoothly. I am equally surprised that the dev decided to pursue Breadbox considering that it probably holds the record for one of the worst performing Indiegogo crowd funding campaigns (it only achieved 1% of its target).

I think many who follow the scene do get weary of constant re-promotion of upcoming titles. I think devs think this is a good thing to do mainly because it appears that it works for Sarah Jane Avory and her C64 titles, but this is more to do with her having a super loyal fan base rather than something we all want.

This is the sequel to the very-capable Rogue64, isn't it? It's even better than I expected, and looks to be a good game even by modern standards. The pixel art and fluidity is delicious. And unlike many "pixel barf" modern games, that seek to represent incorrectly the limitations of older systems, this operates on a real 16-bit system from the 80s.

@Izzanbaad
@Izzanbaad Ай бұрын
What's that got to do with this isometric game?
@Wishbone1977
@Wishbone1977 Ай бұрын
@@Izzanbaad I believe that is exactly what he is referring to. I see his point, but it all comes down to the control scheme. It doesn't matter all that much if you keep strictly to the isometric view, but many games, including this one, do not. You will notice that the minimap is _not_ isometric, meaning that the isometric view of the playing field doesn't line up with the map. As such it means that up-left on the playing field is west (left) on the map, while up-right is north (up). This is where the control scheme comes in. Some isometric games align the controls with the map, meaning moving left will actually move your character up-left on the playing field, while moving up will move your character up-right. This is quite unintuitive, and can lead to unfortunate situations like walking into an enemy unintentionally. Other games may align the controls with the playing field (and/or have the map isometric as well), so that you need to move up-left to have your character move up-left. This is much more intuitive, but can get annoying on digital joysticks. If you can only move in the cardinal directions between the tiles of the playing field, this means you have to always move the joystick diagonally, which takes more strength. Basically, the spring holding the stick gets harder to move the further away from center you go, and moving diagonally to activate for instance both the left and top microswitches requires you to move the stick quite a bit further off-center than simply going left. As such, your hand is likely to get tired much more quickly playing such a game. All that being said, it's not something that bothers me a lot, but I understand that some people might have a problem with it. Of course there are isometric games where this never comes into play. Populous 1&2 are isometric but they are mouse driven and you don't control any characters directly, so the issue never comes up.
@RetroGamerNation
@RetroGamerNation Ай бұрын
You are 100% correct with your analysis. I had to position my joystick diagonally in order to avoid what you described. This would be the only 'weak' point with the game, otherwise its very well produced
