As a dob user the weight difference would be an instant dealbreaker for me. At 3x the weight of the SWAN the Luminos will almost certainly require counterweights, which in turn detracts from the simple 'grab n' go' joy of a small-to-medium sized dob!

a good and free program called Stellarium, has a eyepiece "view" you you can input your telescope specs, and eyepiece specs, and see what it would appear to be like in your setup without having to purchase them. of course lens quality and other factors aren't taken into an account, but it will give you a fair idea of what focal length to purchase for your setup, and will give you an idea of the field of view you can expect

I bought the Askar71F to fill the focal length gap between my RedCat51 and AT115. I love that it has multiple dovetail attachment points. The focuser on mine is not completely smooth and feels a little gritty at points but is still quite serviceable. I paired it with an ASI585MC Pro and it performs well. I’m not fond of 45 degree diagonals for anything but a terrestrial spotting scope. I’m trying to figure out how this scope can be mounted on a camera tripod. The dovetail has two threaded holes but isn’t reversible and standard camera tripod attachment screws are too short to reach inside that dovetail. I prefer the camera rotator rather than the focuser rotating. I’m using it on an AM5 and with the ASIAIR. All things considered, it’s a great scope for the money.

Hi Bogdan Thank you once again for a detailed and honest review. I was waiting for this particular product review 👍 As other people mention it would be good to review and compare to the APM Super Zoom 7,7-15,4 mm 67-66° eyepiece. With my 16" dob I use only two eyepieces, the APM Super Zoom and the APM 30 mm 70°, the latter for low magnification views and starfield sweeps. And when perfect seeing conditions also an APM 2,7x Barlow with the zoom eyepiece for planetary and lunar observation. I first bought the Baader Mark IV zoom, but haven't used it since I got the APM zoom. There's just too much edge distortion when using the Baader zoom with a fast telescope. For the SVBONY zoom at 20 mm, and even the Baader at 24 mm, I still won't consider it suitable for true wide field viewing. Which is why I use the APM 30 mm. The gap from 15,4 mm to 30 mm is irrelevant to me, as I feel the zoom range from medium-to-high power is more useful than the low-to-medium power range.

@j0807m Hi! Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video. The SV230 is a great zoom eyepiece and it will replace some of my fixed focal length eyepieces. But I'll still have to compare it to the Apm super zoom and the leica 8.9mm-17.8mm as these are currently the top tier zoom eyepieces on the market. I'll try to get my hands on both of them for a future video. Clear skies!

@andrewbristoe1833 Hi Andrew! I haven't done any imaging tests yet with the SV230, but out of experience and simply based on the amount of lenses inside, I would assume that a quality Barlow or even a focal extender would yield brighter images.

Hello Bogdan! Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful! I bought a Nexstar 8SE, it has a diagonal prism with coating 1.25"(Celestron Diagonal-1 94115-A), not a mirror like yours. Baader Zeiss will cost me at least 300-350 euros, is there any point in changing the standard prism? So far I have ordered an Explore Scientific 82 11mm eyepiece, I am planning 24mm, but it already 2". Perhaps it would be better to invest in other 1.25" eyepieces without changing the prism? Thanks!

I'm used to reasonably priced camera lenses, binoculars and rifle scopes and I have never seen anything remotely as bad as these "toys" They may have a wide field of view but if most of it is out of focus what's the point? It honestly looks like there was an error when moving from prototype to production. There is no excuse in these days of computer aided design for producing something as bad as this.

I did find a couple things amiss on my kit. The motor cable jackets had been trimmed too far, so the strain relief didn’t grip the cable properly. Fixed with plastic tape. And the bracket for the RA motor needed to be tweaked - bent more - to align the motor shaft and worm gear. It worked out of the box, but made a slight buzz when tracking. The tweak cured that.

I've owned the Orion version for a few years. They're great for finding things when I take my glasses off to use another pair of binos or a telescope. They also amplify light for your eyes at night so I call them my passive nvg's. A little tough to walk in the dark with though due to the slight magnification and distortion... Kind of like trying to run stairs when you first get a pair of progressive eyeglasses. You trip and bump into stuff a lot. But when you look up, you can see entire constellations much easier from light polluted areas! If your eyes don't get along with cheaper binoculars, don't get these. The edge of field distortion doesn't match from eye to eye and your pupil absolutely must be exactly on the optical center and the proper distance for your brain to compensate. I have 0 trouble with any other reasonably collimate binoculars but I find that these are less forgiving and take a few minutes to adjust to. Other than that, I really like them and use them quite a bit!

Installed this on my CG4. Had a bit of trouble talking to it, and it still requires 2 different programs to boot up. but eventually got it to work with Sky Safari on an IPad. Weather has prevented serious testing, but first results are encouraging. After a few corrections, the system will locate and track objects quite nicely. I’m primarily a visual observer, but hope to get some pictures using this with my 100mm refractor.

This pair of binoculars might have a 26° field of view, but the outer half of the image is blurred, so the real field of view with decent image is aroud 13-15°. Also, if the diameter of the objective lens is 42 mm and the magnification is 2.1x, then the exit pupil is 42/2.1=20 mm, NOT 9 mm as it is stated in the video. The pupil of the human eye in the night sky is somewhere between 7 mm (young people) and 4 mm (old people) A midddle aged eye has a pupil of approx. 6 mm. So, you lose a lot of light bc of the 20 mm exit pupil cannot be fitted in the 6 mm eye, only about 11-12% of the light provided by the exit pupil of these binoculars can be taken up by your eyes... A 24 mm objective diameter with the same eyepiece would give about the same brightness with narrower field of view of course.. Try it out by putting a cardboard diaphragm in front of the objective... So this stuff smells like scam to me, especially at the price they demand for it. A better alternative is a pair of Nikon Aculon 7x35 binoculars with a colossal 9.3° field of view. It's my favorite. And it also costs almost half less .
@BogdanDamian
@BogdanDamian 8 күн бұрын
@MrKA1961 Thank you for your feedback and also for pointing out the error regarding the exit pupil. The correct value is 19mm and not 9mm as displayed at 2:49. Sorry for the typo! I've updated the video description and included this later edit. I haven't tested the Nikon Aculon 7x35 yet, but I plan to do so in the future. I've heard a lot of good things about them.
@A0111.
@A0111. Күн бұрын
Good point. So with this exit pupil you lose most of light, basically you use only a portion of 40mm aperture - these binoculars can have 15mm lenses, and be just as bright.

I bought a pair of 3 x 50 Constellation Bino from Aliexpress for about $50. I like them a lot on moonless nights in my bortle 4 sky. The halo or vignetting is similar to yours. Very distracting in daytime, less under a full moon and much less noticeable on a dark night. I was surprised at the number of satellites visible for a couple hours after sunset. I was able to see magnitude 6 on clear dark nights.

I have a similar pair that is 2x54. I have discovered that you can use them with a red dot finder on your telescope to aid in finding dim objects. The low magnification of the binos allows you to stand behind the red dot finder and still see both the red dot and the background sky. So if you are using a manual mount and in light polluted skies they help you see the constellations and help you point the red dot to the appropriate area of the sky to find the object you are looking for. Also, just to let you know they seem to exaggerate the field of view on these type of binos. Best thing is to look at the sky and use planetarium software to determine their true field of view.

Poor recension. It's a Galilean type of binoculars, so it doesn't have a prism. An old well now thing, and it is made from a teleconverter for compact digital cameras. Prefab and very overpriced (ie very expensive). This is a classic marketing pitch. The point here is to increase the magnitude range. ... It is pointless to compare these binoculars with classical binoculars.

A very wide field-of-view at high-magnification is really useful for planetary observations in a Dobsonian because you don't need to move the scope as frequently. You can enjoy the steady view of the planet as it moves across your wide field-of-view. It's also great for looking at the moon because you can see a lot more lunar landscape up-close. Just an observation. Great video! Explains a lot!
