Already looked at it and I like where it's going but yes it's difficult to come away from figma

I have been using penpot a lot more since this video was released. A key factor I didn't cover in this video is Performance. Compared to Figma, the performance on Penpot is not great. If I am to give a score, it'd be a 4 and Figma will be a 9. I can't imagine how penpot will handle a design file with 400+ screens if there's rendering issues at 4 screens. Performance is extremely important if Penpot wants to really compete and I think the team should focus their efforts in this area. On the bright side, Penpot's Flex layout which is similar to Figma's autolayout is really good, so good that I think Figma borrowed some ideas from them as part of the updates on UI3. That been said, there's no perfect tool out there and everyone should be able to express their ideas and creativity using their tool of choice. The design industry is better for everyone when there's more competition and less monopoly with our tooling ♥
@javiertrevino55358 күн бұрын
the problem is, figma already has all of those great UI kits and libraries to bootstrap your work... penpot is useful for a team that is starting from scratch I'll give you that, good on them for making a competitor, we'll see how things evolve
@samuelfabayo13708 күн бұрын
Penpot has libraries too, definitely not as evolved and expansive as Figma's but they do. I just couldn't cover it all in the video.

it's funny how people who think open source and free products are somehow more "ethical" but then those same people do not offer their services for free. Simple fact is you get what you pay for and open source project have a give and take but ethics isn't one of them.

SO the fact that the app is open source really doesn’t matter if the user isn’t a programmer. Furthermore, if you do not have a server system or if your company does not require on premesis systems then penpots ability to be open sourced is not a factor. When everyone started jumping over to Figma, I stayed with Sketch and affinity designer. I am able to collaborate with my clients but at the same time I have more features and capabilities at my disposal than with Figma. And my productivity hasn’t been interrupted. I am not a fan of web browser only tools like penpot. The reasons is simple. Let’s say that something happens or you are in an area that prevents you from having internet. With Sketch and affinity designer I can keep working offline. Whereas with web browser tools don’t allow that and as an agency owner that is a big problem for me. As far as pricing sketch and affinity studio are WAAAAY cheaper overall than Figma. As far as penpot goes, I believe that there should be an open source variant of software available. That said. Free is not always better. There are some instances where this is the case but not always. If you’re looking to serve your customers and grow your business it will be important to develop a robust design pipeline that works for you. If the tools you use are working and getting you great results, stay with them. Great video. Hope this helps.

You should compare Lunacy with Figma and Penpot. Lunacy is free and it has a desktop app. But it's not open source.
@erics700411 күн бұрын
Penpot is cool, but Figma and Lunacy are better. I hope Penpot gets more improvement soon, because it's still lacks a lots of things.

Really nice video ! I have my eyes on Penpot since day one and when I heard about the move that Adobe made on Figma I was like more into Penpot. I have to say it's nice, as a customer, to have a choice, a little competition is always good. Also regarding Adobe / Figma, Adobe just cancelled the acquisition of Figma for now so let's see what happens next !
