While I completely agree that black-and-white thinking runs rampant in the church, this particular example is a terrible one. Either Smith was a prophet, or he wasn't. There is more than likely grey areas within his life, where he made bad calls, made mistakes, and was human, but he either was a prophet or he wasn't. That point is, in fact, binary. There are some things that are, in fact, binary - just not as many things as some members seem to believe.

I don't know that David Layton is a member (at least not in good standing). I did an internship for Layton Construction years ago and it was common knowledge that he had an affair with his admin. He divorced his wife and married her (his admin). Also, Okland sucks. I worked for them as a subcontractor and they were all monstrous pricks

Having worked for the Church and additionally having my father spend his career in the church, I will add some additional notes for good and bad: 1. Many general authorities do not write their own talks. My father wrote talks for Howard W. Hunter. Ghost writing doesn’t extend to just books. However, as my dad noted they did reviews and change his talk a little from his original. 2. My father wrote the “Teachings of President Nelson” book at DB, he gave it away for free. That was his choice, but the church profits off that book without giving him any credit. 3. As a child of a church employee, I don’t know who this extended all to, but I was able to go to school for free which was actually a huge blessing. 3. All meals at the administrative building appeared to be free to certain general authorities. I don’t know who all this extends to. So while I and my father had to buy our own food, the stipend authorities (who we made significantly less than) had free breakfast and lunch. 4. During conference workers were catered, but their catering was often something like Qdoba or an order. The general authorities had their own special catered meals for the rich and didn’t mingle among the peasants. Catering these meals is a significant expense. 5. When the affordable care act was passed, the Church was one of the organizations who opted to reduce hours instead of offering health insurance to their “part time” employees. I worked upwards of 40 hours a week and was considered part time. My hours were changed to 32. So I had no sponsored health insurance and reduced hours. 6. The church pays a charity level of income. Meaning it’s a little less than the general market as expected. However, you are expected to pay your 10% to stay employed. And if you are part time, you don’t receive insurance as mentioned above. This may have changed since I left church employment but was true around the ACA time. So you are being paid drastically less than market value and if part time, no insurance. And you pay for your own lunch. 7. When working Sundays as an employee (ironic?), sometimes they would buy you lunch/dinner which was common for events during the week. But other times they would claim they were trying to keep the sabbath holy and you needed to have your own meal. While working. On a Sunday. While the general authorities received catering. 8. You’ll notice that the vast majority of general authorities are rich. Many of them are hired to come be part of the church as businessmen and run it like a business. With rare exceptions (such as Hinckley). This seems very different from the grand mix of social status amongst the biblical prophets and apostles.

It’s is absolutely mind-boggling how hard the people who produced that video worked on their mental gymnastics in their cringy effort to slander someone who just asked a bunch of very valid questions. While I was in the military, I quickly learned that when a “leader” doesn’t know what he’s doing, he will verbally attack you and make you feel stupid for asking questions. This is the EXACT same mentality on display, on a much larger scale.

@NemoTheMormon Have you done any research into President Nelson's involvement with the Skull and Bones Chapter at the University of Utah, and Owl and Key? This is a very concerning matter for me and was wondering if you had any information or an opinion regarding this. Thank you in advance.

Will Oaks be the next prophet? I think that would cause a mass exodus of members leaving the LDS church.

Well done Nemo. Great research and as a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a temple Patreon i concur with your speech. It is not the size or height of the spire it, is the importance of what goes on inside. I truly hope this is resolved and a temple is built that reflects the wishes of this good community.😊
