I last walked down Haight-Ashbury in March 1969. The Summer of Love seemed far behind, and it was a very uncool rip-off sort of atmosphere. I'm sorry I missed it 2 years earlier. Oh, and btw, it doesn't look anything like it looked then!

10 dollar is extremely cheap for a hostel in Ximen Taipei, so I am not surprised to see this at all. A decent hostel would cost at least 20-30 dollar in Taipei.

Those are actually private properties called 騎樓 in Taiwan. It's suppose for public use but only in certain areas where they ban people put stuff or park on them so they can be used as sidewalk. It's more common in Taipei that 騎樓 are used as sidewalk. I believe only few areas in Kaohsiung that ban people from parking in 騎樓. But I agree they should be used as sidewalk, problem is too many scooters would have nowhere to park.

I must have been only 12 years old or so when our family drove to Haight Ashbury (from michigan). My sister, only a couple years older than i at that time stepped out of our parked car to go inside one of the shops there. She came back right away crying. My dad stepped out and into the shop. I have no idea what transpired in there, but i could guess...some bad hippies making bold moves.
