Since some are from so far away does she get them from a pet shop or something? Does japan even have pet shops? Also guessing they are summer seasonal. Do they have a short lifetime since she gets new ones yearly? or do they get released/returned?
@chipmunkm4nСағат бұрын
They have short lifespans. She breeds some and buys/catches others.
@Odontomango44 минут бұрын
Most of these are bred by JP Pro breeders.

If I remember correctly her brother works as an entomologist or something like that and she helps him raise them. So maybe he has contacts via the university and can procure some rarer species that way? I do know she's raised beetle larvae as well and if it's anyway close to raising spiders then you can order baby specimens online via breeders (that's common with spiders at least). She used to go out in the woods at night to collect local specimens as well, don't know if she still does so or not. Regarding what happens to them... I don't readily know the average lifespan of beetles although many insects and least male arachnids tend to live rather short lives, roughly about a year. The way I've understood it previously is that at least some of the beetles (maybe even all of them) are later given to her brother for research and/or use for his university.

A clarification from a fellow invert keeper who had a D. satanas before, they are a protected species native to Bolivia. They are very few in the wild but due to breeding efforts, you can find many in the hobby trade.

There’s so many shops that specialize in beetles and insects in Japan. They import beetles from foreign countries. You can buy them for an affordable price.

I think many people who are creeped out by bugs don't mind big armored ones like these, since they're not "squishy" and don't skitter around when they move.

Insects are so cool, sure there are some that are pests and a nuisance, but beetles, are probably my fav variety, so many, and a lot of them are super chill. I remember when I lived in TN for a spell trying to figure out life, I'd always go out after dark to find Hercules beetles and other big ass buggus like mantids and what not. Was always fun to watch my friends freak out as I just pick up a massive hercules beetle, and then seeing their faces go from shock to genuine intrigue as to how the thing can be so calm. It's also funny to tell people I hoard daddy long legs and wolf spiders where I live currently, as they do a damn fine job at eating the pest insects, got a few big ass wolf spider females wandering around my office, sometimes they just end up on me and all I can do is pick it up, watch it freak out, then calm down, and then I put it somewhere else, that's not on me. Ah bugs, love them, hate them, they help us.
