This video is an ad for Italki. The last thing needs for CI is a teacher or a conversation partner. There are millions of hours of CI on KZfaq. The worst idea is using content for native speakers. Study the articles of Stephen Krashen. You recommend useless things that contradict the CI theory. Please read CI theory

Ahhh I'm glad multi-language-learning people like me are finding my videos! Which languages are you learning/do you have on your list?? Also in relation to the time thing, I actually don't have a great track of balancing my time super well... XD That being said, very recently I've discovered a few things that have really started to help me be a lot more consistent and balance my time a lot better so I can totally make a video about those if you'd like!

I remember Malcolm Gladwell saying that "Friends" could be playing on mute and you'd still be able to understand what's going on. That explains why so many people say that they learned English by watching "Friends".

I'm at the level where I can't exactly understand native level speech but if you wrote what you said I could 80% of the chance understand. Just cause my knowledge of words and grammar is pretty good but I still can't find the perfect way for listening practice.
@speaking_of_languages

Sounds like you just need to keep doing exactly what you are currently doing and give it a bit more time! It also might help you to do some more targeted practice by listening to things once at normal speed, then once again at a bit of a slower speed (you can slow videos down within the KZfaq player) where you also stop and look up a few words if you need to, then rewatching it for a third time at full speed to see how your comprehension has improve! This is a technique used all throughout the Innovative Language podcasts which I have used quite extensively to study multiple languages and I find it really useful, but you can do it by yourself just with KZfaq videos as well! It's definitely more of a targeted study practice though, not just casual immersion, so it really depends on how much time you have and how you prefer to learn. But I hope it can help you if you'd like to try it! Good luck with your language learning, and thank you for watching my video!

I met a Korean girl in Japan who learned Japanese from watching J-dramas / Japanese TV. She was emphatic in that she didn't do any studying outside of watching them. The languages are a lot closer than English is to Korean or Japanese so I don't think she was exaggerating. I don't think she even used a dictionary (much). But I'm using flash cards and grammar books. I've taken some online classes too but just random online classes no real structured course which would be so much better I think. Also, instead of K dramas I'm watching KZfaq (I've gotten a little bored of k-dramas recently). KZfaq is really good.

Hi, nice to meet you! Yeah it doesn't surprise me at all that a native Korean speaker would be able to learn Japanese just from consuming Japanese media given how close the languages are, although my one curiosity would be if she had learned any Kanji at all or if she was going purely for spoken fluency. I also do think you can do it without using a dictionary or flashcards or anything no matter what your native and target languages are, but I've also found that it just speeds up the process so much that it doesn't make a lot of sense not to add those things on top, especially given how little extra effort they take! I also totally agree that KZfaq is really good for immersing. K-dramas are great because they usually follow a pretty similar plot, especially if they're the same genre, which makes it easy to guess what will happen, but this same thing is also a downside because being super predictable means that they can end up boring you. KZfaq also has another advantage over K-dramas which is that a lot of KZfaq content is unscripted, meaning it's generally closer to how people actually talk in real life, you get to hear a lot more filler words, and people tend to repeat themselves a little bit more which gives you a better chance of understanding. Can I ask which KZfaqrs you are mainly watching at the moment?

Warning: Don't let automatically translate this comment! Try to read it in English first! Wow! Good job for being here and immersing yourself in native-level content! When I get time, I will try to add English subtitles to my videos to help if you are using them to immerse. Don't forget you can also slow videos down on KZfaq if you need to! Also, I totally agree with you about the details! I am currently watching Korean dramas to learn Korean, and while I only understand about 15% of the dialogue, I understand around to 60% of what is happening in the drama. This is because I don't focus on the details of what they're saying, I just take what I can understand along with the video and try to get an idea of the bigger picture. If I was worried about the details, watching it wouldn't be fun for me and I wouldn't be able to immerse the way I am. So you're right! The details will come with time, at this stage the best thing you can do is just do your best to understand and try to have fun! Good luck with your English studies, and I hope to see you again on my channel! (Try to comment in English next time if you want! It's ok if it's wrong--this is a safe space! You can always put the Portuguese underneath it if you are worried I won't understand).

This has got to be one of the most helpful videos on learning languages I've seen. And I've watched a lot of them. I definitely have low motivation and am easily distracted and it's not something that is really talked about much in language learning spaces. Having you say "hey it's okay to use multiple apps and study methods if you get bored" was something I really needed to hear. So thank you. I'm just starting out (for like the 8th time or something lol) and I plan to learn the kanji for Japanese, with the book Remembering the Kanji by James Heisig, and learn Esperanto at the same time. Once I've got a good chunk of kanji down I will probably start the Duolingo Japanese course over and use a couple other apps. Other languages I'd love to learn but probably never will (I'm a bit of a pessimist) are Russian and German as well as Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean. Spanish would probably be helpful where I live (southern US), but I am just not that interested in it. That could change but for now, eh. Since I've just stumbled upon you, what languages have you learned and/or are learning?
@speaking_of_languages
@speaking_of_languages Ай бұрын
Oh my gosh hi!! I'm so glad my video was helpful to you 😭 I literally made it cause I struggle so much with this myself and it's just over the past few months that I've gotten past denying I have a problem (blaming myself thinking I'm just not trying hard enough) and actually started accepting that this is just part of how I am and trying to find techniques to support myself in my own language learning. As for the languages I speak/learn, I'm a native English speaker (from Australia!), and I also speak Mandarin and Spanish both pretty fluently (although not really native level), and have been studying them both on and off for 11 years (Mandarin) and 5 years (Spanish). I'm actually doing a Masters degree in Mandarin-English translation rn! Apart from that my next best language is probably Japanese--I majored in Japanese language for my Bachelors degree but it's been 2 years since I graduated and I haven't really been studying it much in the meantime. I've also studied Korean here and there and have somewhat of an upper-beginner level, and I can read Arabic/Urdu letters XD (but I cant say anything lol). Recently I've been studying Korean a bit again but who knows if that will continue for very long haha. I'd also love to learn a bunch of other languages (CANTONESE❤, German, Italian, Thai) and my partner's native language is Urdu so I really should learn that too, but like I said I kinda have a problem with motivation and getting distracted 😅 Anyway I'd like to wish you the best of luck with Japanese!! I've heard really good things about the book Remembering the Kanji but if you find yourself getting distracted from it you could check out a kanji learning website/app called WaniKani (sorry if you already know about it!). From what I've heard it uses a similar method to Remembering the Kanji, but it's probably a bit more engaging! I tried it many years ago and found it quite good but didn't end up using it long term as by the time I started learning Japanese I was already pretty fluent in Mandarin and therefore familiar with lots of kanji. Anyway good luck!! Thank you for stopping by and leaving me such a lovely in-depth comment!

I think my ADHD is showing up more as distraction and boredom than hyperfocus right now. Good luck with your Masters! That sounds ambitious. How was learning tones in Mandarin for you? I know a lot of English speakers struggle with it. It's the thing that intimidates me with learning it. Thank you so much! I have heard of WaniKani, but that it's paid restricts me. Hi! Great video, very well spoken. A lot of people struggle with this concept and refuse to think outside the scope of equivalency. I'm a translator and not only do people not understand that translating is not the same thing as interpreting, they don't understand the basic concept of language as a tool of communication, of transfer of meaning. Translation is the written transfer of meaning from one language to another, and interpreting is the verbal transfer of meaning from one language to another. I've sat in language classes where people get frustrated and even angry and say to the teacher "But you said x means x! now you're saying x means y? that's not right!" Anyway, I'd love to see more videos from you and I hope this video helps a lot of people :)

Thank you so much for your comment! Oh my gosh it's so nice to hear from someone who completely understands! I've had the exact same experience that you described in language classes, which is exactly why I wanted to make this video. I get what you mean about translating/interpreting too. I'm not a translator or interpreter (yet!) but I've been in my fair share of situations where I've had to interpret for people and it can be really frustrating when they just don't understand, like you said, that it's a transfer of meaning, and not just about finding equivalent words and putting them together in the correct order. Another problem I notice in people who don't understand this is that they'll be more likely to make judgements about your actual ability in a given language based on how well you translate/interpret into/from it, without understanding that the skills of translation and interpretation are separate from the skill of the actual language itself. Anyway, thank you so much again for your comment and keep up the awesome work as a translator! It's people like you who help the world communicate, acting as a bridge for people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds to understand each other, which I think is amazing and super important work 🤗🤗

I love how you said it is the transfer of meaning (context) and not transfer of words for example.
