For those Keys & keyways you could as you said avoid finishing them. More over on the unpainted key shafts rub in some paste wax finish & buff it out. This will prevent humidity changes in the key to some degree but mostly lubricate the moving wood on wood parts making the keys easier to move.

A way to bend veneer into extreme shapes is to soak it in ammonia, basically the same chemical process as in a perm.

If you have a maker space nearby, you can download the files from Thingiverse. You can also order from the designer of the Nerdy Gurdy. You can also go to the Nerdy Gurdy Builders Facebook page and get in touch with some people there. I've linked all of those sites in the description of the video. Enjoy your Nerdy Gurdy Journey!

These videos are really phenomenal! Every time I've had a question that I couldn't figure out from the guide (like, how to actually string the instrument!), I came to your videos and found a nice demonstration of what I was uncertain about! Thank you for doing such a great job documenting the entire process.

So I just contacted a laser cutting store near me and emailed them a link to the kit on thingiverse to see how much it would cost. Because I've loved the look and sound of a hurdy gurdy for ages now and want to get into learning to play it.

Any advice on getting a buzz out of the dogs? I've been struggling with mine for going on six months now & they still haven't made a sound.
@thegentleflamingo8540

Initially, the dogs fit too tightly into their slots, so I filed down the "tail" end for a looser fit. I also had to play with the tension of my tyrant strings. It took a bit of fiddling.

What was the process of getting one of these kits? I recently got a small kit from Amazon and I really enjoy playing the instrument but it's a bit too small and I was looking for a full sized one, but a 2k full sized one.

I got my kit from a person in the US who make the kits. Her name is Marti Jo, and you can contact her at [email protected]. You could also order a kit from the designer of the nerdy gurdy at nerdygurdy.nl. And lastly, if you are feeling adventurous and/or have access to a maker space, you can find all the plans and files at www.thingiverse.com/thing:5368197.

Hi Nora. I am actually finally on vid #7. However I noticed something I am not sure I need to correct. Re: the tailpiece. At the 7:25 mark the large holes are aligned so the right side is on the lower part of the center piece and the left side hole is in the middle. At the 10:04 mark they are reversed. Rt side middle and lft side lower. Does this make a difference? Not sure if I will need to re-drill the holes or try and turn it around. Thanks!
@thegentleflamingo8540
@thegentleflamingo8540 2 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't make a difference. Those holes are staggered like that so you can reach the pegs that the tyrant strings tie on to later.

Wait a sec, my printed instructions have me putting the sides on before the wheel. This seems better, but its too late for me.
@thegentleflamingo8540
@thegentleflamingo8540 2 жыл бұрын
Did you use a glue that will loosen with some heat (heat gun or hair dryer)? My instructions said to add the sides before the wheel, but with the way I attached my wheel to the crank shaft, I needed access to it before I put the sides on. I'll be trying something different with my next Nerdy Gurdy.
@tbtGreg
@tbtGreg 2 жыл бұрын
@@thegentleflamingo8540 I used CA glue on the sides, so I don't think so. I've contemplated cutting a panel in the back that can be reattached, or just cutting off the side and making a new one. Not sure yet. But I think they need to fix the printed instructions.

Hey, you may never reply to this, but did you put a clear coat/finish on your wheel. I am staining mine and am worried that the clear coat/finnish may affect my sound.
@thegentleflamingo8540
@thegentleflamingo8540 2 жыл бұрын
I covered the veneer/playing edge with painter's tape before applying a clear coat to the sides of the wheel. You don't want any sort of finish on the veneer.

So the kit that I received didn’t have the keys numbered? Any suggestions on figuring out which one is which?
@norasmith2703
@norasmith2703 2 жыл бұрын
The keys with the longer key heads are the bottom row, and the keys with the shorter key heads are the top row. Generally, the larger keys are nearest the tuning head and the smaller keys are nearer the wheel. If you use the link in the description to the Thingiverse files, you can find a picture of the two key rows in order. That might help a little.

Wow, unbelievable that you managed to cur out these pieces by hand! really incredible! Next time maybe you can search for a near maker Space to laser cut the parts. May I ask which wood you used? is it birch or polar plywood? I always thought poplar would be to soft.

Can you shape the wheel without adding the glue/sawdust mix and then add the veneer? Thanks.
@norasmith2703
@norasmith2703 2 жыл бұрын
The glue/sawdust mix is not necessary at all. I did that because the two pieces of the wheel slid a little and were uneven. I was afraid the wheel would end up too small if I tried to even it put, so I added a little height with the glue/sawdust mix.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I am in the beginning process of putting one together. What size screws (M?) did you use to secure the end block and brace? 22:20 mark?
