OCTOPUSSY is defo a great magical Movie where they really wanted to show that Bond still has it and theyre gonna give it to us and you dont care weather things dont quite mix because youve just watched an incredible adventure. 2:13 yeah thats why i dont get certain people who feel 'Live and Let Die' is Rogers best performnace. Its good, but he excells more in his later movies honestly. and Yes it maybe his best Bond movie because it shows Rogers strenghs as an actor and with what he can do. 13:03 ooooo yeah I like it, its certanly very much what he does in GOLDFINGER when he annoys Auric and Oddjob I'm not sure if this or TLD could be JOhn Glens best Bond movie, I always debate that with myself. 31:55 I feel if your a kid and you do that, you enjoy the movies even more to a certain degree. People later on in life, if they watch the Bond movies in order for the first time, they tend to really REALLY not like the weaker Bond movies and wont wanna watch them again. Where as Bond fans whove grown up with them can at least have that love and patience to sit through any of them and appreciate what each were trying to do.....and YES, even if that is Die Another Day hahah

26:46 Agreed and thats why I would say at the very least that moments like that in this movie, makes it more of an legitimate movie for what its worth compared to what sadly 'Die another Day' is really. Ooooooo while there are pictures online, did you ever see the video footage of Grace Jones and Maude Adams promoting 'Goldeneye 64' in a 1997 games exhibition? Its no longer online, but its defintaley out there, someone must still have that footage.

This was actually my first Bond movie and it has a alot of childhood nostalgia :) and I will say that there are some clever moments in the movie in how Bond is able to escape certain situation or think on his feet to solve certain problems without using guns and gadgets which is always nice to see. And yes there a lot of laughs about this movie. Saying that however...... after watch all the Bond movies in a row back in 1999, this movie really REALLY went down on my low list and none of my freinds ever wanted to see this movie again hahah. 11:52 I'm glad you mentioned that, I can see what they were trying to do and maybe it could have been earned if they executed it differently ..... perhaps??? 13:01 1000% agree especially since people like Clint eastwood or Harrison ford came back as Harry or Indie at a much older age , so i dount see that to be the films biggest problem. 13:45 Your right again, if however you had someone like Priscilla Presley or some one else maturer then maybe they could have gotten away with it. I feel Denise Richards only just got away with it in TWINE compared to someone like Tanya personally. Hope your well mate, i need to get back to watching your videos. enjoy your summer

The thing is, No Time To Die orignally was supposed to come out in April of 2020. Its been over 4 years and no development? That film has been done for a while. Either there has been little work put in, they dont know how to move forward or they have done a lot and just kept it all close to the vest.

To be fair, the promotional cycle of a movie is a circus unto itself. I think it's fair to say EON was probably busy up through the bulk of 2021 (managing all the schedule shifts and ad deals, etc.).

I *will* defend Bond in a clown suit. Ha. Well, I’ll defend it within the confines of this movie. For me, he almost HAS to go full clown after everything else in this movie. If not logically, then tonally. After everything else I’d be unsatisfied if he didn’t. It also calls back to 009. As I recall hearing the Fleming clown idea, or probably how I imagine it, both Bomd and a baddie would be dressed as clowns fighting and the audience thinks it’s an act. It’s a perfectly absurd idea to me.

The main problem is this overly hedonistic approach, I do think there is a catch with hedonism to this character. I do not think it is bad, some escapism is inevitable, but there should be a twist to his hedonism. With this hedonism and fear of death as important, Bond is nothing more than a criminal, and that is not the case. Bond is, after all, invented character and secret agent, this hedonism diminshes the importance of his missions and his role in society. Example would make my idea probably lot less vague: there could have been achieved a lot with romance subplot in f.e., Diamonds are forever, two girls could have lot bigger conflict in chasing him which could add additional tension to whole plot and some interesting possibilities. Instead, we saw an unpromising and bit forced bed scene and one girl dead in pool, instead of meaningful story of two criminal minded girls trying to achieve their goals. Meaningful is not the right word, but it is definitely more probable story then sudden death of one of the girls. I do not say it is not excellent movie, or that I did not enjoy watching it, but just that lot more can be achieved with some elements twisted.

My thoughts on TND on is that it overall has a nice energy and feels like a 90’s event action movie. The opening is a slam dunk, and for me recalls OCTOPUSSY’s PTS in that Bond achieves his objective of blowing shit up at the end thanks to somebody else’s missile (which I love in OP). The rest of the movie has shadows of good ideas but only truly shines in specific scenes. The scenes in the Hamburg hotel room are my favorite in Brosnan’s tenure.

Thought-provoking analysis, Ryan. To me, it’s not so much that I think all Bond films need to provide escapism as the driving force for every entry, or anything like that, but more that I just desperately want a tonal shift towards more pure entertainment following Craig’s psychological-heavy tenure. I want an embrace of the fantastic (which can involve darker undercurrents) after that was often pushed into the background for Craig. I want to walk out of the next Bond film feeling energized and with a smile on my face. By the way, pleased to hear that you’ll be covering NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN!

I agree wholeheartedly, Ryan. Art should be challenging at times. If not it would be stale. Yes, James Bond is fantasy. So are Sherlock Holmes, Zorro, Superman, Godzilla, and a bunch of others, and they were killed off in their respective media. Did we feel something at the moment when they died? Yes, we're human, and seeing the demise of a beloved character can be upsetting (especially if you're a child: Say the animated Transformers movie from the 80s, lol). At the same time, we should recognize that these characters do come back in some form or fashion. I also enjoyed No Time to Die, and even liked the ending. I understood what they were doing. I was also aware that, even though he died, the series would return on screen one day. That's the extension of the fantasy of Bond. "007 always comes back," lol. And when he does return, I too agree that it will be a more traditional adventure, in the modern style of a Goldfinger, or a Living Daylights, or a GoldenEye. I think the producers are gonna give some rest to the more "provocative" entries for now. And yes, like Batman, they should provide a balance to the grit alongside the fantastic. Think more the lines of the 90s Animated Series than the Nolan films. 🎉

A really nice video and I can understand that you want to present things right. Although there are other channels out there with the same quality, if find your presentation style so genuine, more an intriguing conversation than listening to a cold educational lecture. Part of the appeal of anti-heroes is to vicariously live out those fantasies. Things we wish we could do but we feel are on the darker side of morally grey and wouldn't sit well with us and people but would also set a detrimental precedence for our behaviour. Anti-heroes can sway our beliefs either way, it doesn't always have to push us to the dark side. Without actual tangible consequences, we can judge and gauge and measure. It is in essence a moral exercise for the soul and it's a good thing. What is so often spoken about are those anti-heroes, but nobody speaks about anti-villains. Although a couple of content creators I follow have touched on this subject it is very fresh in my mind because me and a friend from work went to see The Godfather at the cinema. He knew the rough premise but had never seen the details, I hadn't seen it in about 15 years and the ending was probably a bit fudgy because it was always played late at night. What we both picked up on was the fact that Corleone initially didn't want to get involved with drugs until the situation developed, not because he didn't think it could make him money but because he thought it was morally wrong. There are probably better examples of anti-villain but that one is fresh. Again, love the video.

Very fine analysis of the two principal flaws of "Dr.No." The dryness you accurately cite in its style was characteristic of much postwar British cinema. Films such as "Tom Jones," the two Beatles features and, of course, the later James Bond movies changed all that by the mid-sixties. And you're spot-on about the dismal portions of Monty Norman's score, almost none of which appears on the movie's soundtrack album. Little wonder John Barry was given full realm in scoring the subsequent films.

I don't think I have much to add here on to your analysis, Ryan. It's my favorite Connery Bond film, and up in my top 5 for the series. This is the Hitchcockian Bond film, down to the T. I'm a big Hitchcock fan, which is likely why this film resonates with me so well. I've got some Bond film posters hanging in my house, and my FRWL one is the centerpiece of that wall. I love that this film is character driven, rather than a really overcomplicated plot. It's got style, charm, elegance, and brutish elements. The soundtrack is fantastic too, ranking rather highly for me (up there with OHMSS, LALD, TLD, TND, and NTTD). I've heard from a few folks that most Bond fans fall into one of two camps. Either you really like FRWL, or your really like Goldfinger. Both are pretty distinct from one another, with one amping up the bombastic vibes, while the other is more focused on getting us connected with the characters & motivations. I love both, but FRWL ranks a fair bit higher for me. I'm late to commenting here, as I was across the country for a wedding in a very hot, humid place. Needless to say, I'm happy to be home, and happy to have given this analysis a watch. Looking forward to the next one Ryan!

This was the best succinct analysis I've heard of my favorite Bond movie.. Well done, sir! Some of these vital aspects usually don't get discussed, but didn't slip past your critical eye. I will also say one of my favorite things about the film, besides its Hitchcock vibes, is the way the city of Istanbul is incorporated into the story, and we get to live there and soak it up for an extended period. A true travelogue many later Bond films would eschew for galavanting action. When I was fortunate enough to visit Istanbul in 1997, it was truly a place of mystery and atmosphere. In fact, all of my fav Bond films take place in Eastern Europe and/or SE/Med area

Good analysis and I can't really add much to what you've said. I agree with your take on Tatiana, she pretty much a complete innocent and a victim character. The stereotypical damsel in distress. Played well by the stunning Daniela Bianchi, she unfortunately had little to do. However, I've been diving deep lately in to the 1960's Eurospy genre, low budget Bond knockoffs produced by Italy, France, Spain and Germany. Some of them are quite good and some are better than some Bond films. In Special Mission Lady Chaplin (1966) Daniela Bianchi plays Bond! Well not Bond but a fashion designer/model/assassin/master thief, she jumping out of airplanes, committing assassinations, shooting machine guns, blowing stuff up and being a general bad ass action girl! It's a not a great film but it is an extremely fun film and you get to see Daniela Bianchi do things you had no idea she had any ability to do. Although you've made some great points, I'm going to open up one for debate because of what has happened through the media, especially over the last 10 years regarding gender and in this case, sexuality. This could as equally down my modern interpretation and sensibilities. I'm going to word this as best as I can but I'm not convinced how clear it will be. If we are taking the movie as itself, although it's actually a few years since I've seen it I didn't read any lesbian coding in Klebb. That is much more heavily implied in the book but I'm trying to keep to what we saw and heard on screen. She is domineering to compensate for her smaller stature, even for a woman, she is small. She especially dominates women who are more attractive than she is, beautiful women have sway over men so if she controls them then she is at the top of the pecking order. Again, possibly a response to recent agenda-driven female characters but I still think there is truth to it.

The bit where Klebb puts her hand on Tatiana's leg is absolutely an intentional hint to the audience of the 1960s, I think.

@@AnalyzeThisMisterBond I've rewatched the clip now. When she touches the knee it is brief and, although she has her back turned, she does not seemingly react or halter in her dialogue. I feel she was testing her reaction to touch, and thus how useful she is. If she had reacted and recoiled, she would have been useless as an asset. At the end she of the scene she talk softly, brushes her hair and collar bone. This could be read as more sexual but given the context of the scene as a whole, once establishing her domination, she wishes to leave on better terms and with Tatiana and have her as ally rather than maintaining the fear at level 10.

Another top favorite of mine; one of the more "down to earth" Bond films, especially with it being in between two great fantastical ones. Also one of my favorite travelogue films; I love how it delves into Turkish and Gypsy customs. A fine, geniune ally in the character of Kerim Bey; he's the archetype of so many others (Draco, Columbo, Kamran Shah, Zukovsky, Mathis) The film definitely makes you interested in delving more into the SPECTRE organization, with its great rogues gallery. The scene where Grant holds Bond at gunpoint has a certain rawness to it, and Connery completely sells Bond's genuine fear as much as Shaw sells his character's psychopathy. And of course, the big Hitchcock homage to North By Northwest that's personified by the helicopter chase scene, lol. You know what more recent film could've actually revisited the "sexual scandal" plotline, but decided to just go for non-stop action? Tomorrow Never Dies. The point where Bond finds Paris dead in the hotel room could've been something Carver could've used to his advantage. Carver could've had an enemy basically is neutralized by his own media machine, blaming both Bond and the British secret service for the death of his wife, and flipping Bond's investigation into a fight for his own life, all the while a major world war looms. And Carver could've provided all the manhunt coverage, 24/7. Would've been a genuine action thriller. Oh well... Always great to see your videos, cheers!

it is a unique entry, it is very much a film of its time yet still timeless in it's appeal. I think its Roger's best film, superb supporting cast and a great supernatural vibe to the whole thing underscores the relatively simple plot of heroin smuggling. As a fan of Moore's before he took on the role it was with great anticipation that the film carried to the premiere. He was a worldwide star thanks to 'Ivanhoe'. 'Maverick', 'The Persuaders', and of course, 'The Saint'. So you knew what to expect but still wondered how it would work, Connery will always be the sin qua non of the series. But no one, not even the estimable Scot could have survived the 70's (and the terrible polyester fashions) other than Roger. He had the looks and the sheer charm to make even lesser efforts like 'The Man With the Golden Gun' still fun to watch. My take is he saved the series. 'LALD' is in my top 5 and it is still as enjoyable as it was when it came out. McCartney and George Martin did a terrific job on my favorite non John Barry score. A way they could undo the damage caused by the ending of NTTD is to use the opening from Fleming’s novel “The Man with the Golden Gun” which followed “You Only Live Twice” (which NTTD took its cues from). Bond, presumed dead, has been brainwashed and begins the story trying to assassinate M. Its the best part of that story and would offset the bad taste of the previous film.
