I think the real fur thing is fine considering the repurposing of materials already used. Eco-friendly that way.

It's good to have you back! no worries about the cryptid energy, I'm absolutely here for it what an absolutely gorgeous project! The intense look ash tends to have came across so so well! I love how you always take the scalability of fabrics into account <3 kudos to you for sticking with applying the wefts in the way you did as well! His little outfit is just perfect!!! I get your concerns about the fur used in the movie, and it had me do some digging. From what I've read, (article excerpt pasted below + article link for the folks interested) I'm honestly not too concerned, it seems they used just the fur, not the actual skins of animals so that'd just grow back again I'd think! Then again if it was full furs I'd rather fur and leather be re-used for different things for a long time than be thrown out and replaced by 'vegan leather' which is honestly just plastic. There's definitely a thing to be said for using everything on an animal (for example when butchered for the meat the bones and hide are also used), and killing animals just for their hide and fur. I'm a taxidermist in training so I see alot of furs and skins go by so I see a certain beauty in using these materials for art/educational purposes, and giving it a 'second life' rather than discarding it all together. --------------------------------------------------------------- [ [ MacKinnon and Saunders were concerned, however, by Anderson’s insistence on giving the animal characters real fur, which has a tendency to twitch when animated, rather than sculpted fur, more typical for stop-motion puppets. But Anderson was so enamored by the tangibility of real fur in Ladislas Starewich’s 1930 stop-motion classic, Roman de Renard (based, like Dahl’s book, on the medieval Franco-Germanic epic about a cunning fox and a menagerie of anthropomorphic animals) that he was adamant about using it in his own movie. [...] The animals’ fur was a combination of artificial fur, plucked off toys, and real goat’s hair, which was dyed using everyday supermarket hair dyes. Getting each character’s hair coloring exactly right required specific, individual dying times. The human characters’ hair, meanwhile, was harvested from the scalps of studio employees. “We'd go around the workshop and find someone who had matching color hair and take clumps out of it,” says MacKinnon, “and then we’d punch it into the surface of the puppet.” The fur on the animals’ limbs and heads was applied to a latex backing that was stretched over the puppet. But on the areas around the muzzles and eyes, which had to be carefully groomed for close-ups, each hair was placed by hand. “Especially if you had a character like Mr. Fox, for whom you had to do 15 to 20 head skins … It was driving people crazy towards the end,” says MacKinnon.] ] the above is an excerpt from an interview with Vanity Fair ( www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2009/11/how-the-puppets-from-fantastic-mr-fox-were-made-slideshow ) the whole article can be read here

I’ve somehow never watched this movie, and if I did, I was probably really young?? I’m guessing the reason why on the juice box, there’s apples because he’s still a part of this group, but he’s just different in his own way. He’s comfortable with himself, but he’s also comfortable being a part of something that he knows he’s different from.

If given the choice, I'd much rather use real animal fur than plastic based material, as it is fully biodegradable and environmentally friendly. So many of our clothes that are made out of plastic shed micro plastics into the environment every time we wash them.

I think reusing and upcycling animal fur is quite a sustainable choice, not to mention that we are already living in so much plastic, no need to make new when you can reuse some coat, that's eaten by moths or like you said, shaven furs and hair It's not like creators of the movie specifically hunted down some foxes for that (or commissioned so) Taxidermy also exists and can be ethical too, so, idk

Aw Ash I love him! This is such a gorgeous piece! Also, I have the opposite opinion about the fur usage actually! Using existing furs is a way to give them a second life. Bring actual life to something that was long dead. It's sad that animals were killed for the furs... But what makes it even sadder? If these furs are just destroyed. They would have been killed for nothing. This is a beautiful way to pay hommage and not just let deaths be wasted.

I think the apples on the grape juice box might be a brand thing. One of the farmers was all about apple cider, and the three farmers owned the grocery store the foxes broke into in the end, so maybe they used apples as part of the store's logo. Or maybe it was grape flavored apple juice? Who knows?

The second I saw the thumbnail, I had the Boggis Bunce & Bean song running through my head. Beautiful work! Ash is one of my favorites and I always get a kick out of his little bandit hat. <3 Also, the acrylic+fabric softener paint is such a great idea, I’ll need to give that a try sometime! On the topic of the film’s puppets: I always thought they were made with faux fur! Even after hearing about the team’s efforts to sustainably fabricate the puppets, it’s still a shame to hear that they were made with real fur. It’s a frustrating dissonance with the movie’s themes, especially since it feels like the discourse over the ethics of fur was long established by the time production started.

considering they were reusing already made things i feel like that nakes it more ethical. but like, the origin of those would have to come into it as well probably like if theyre from fur farms or were killed unjustly or simply for fur. not an expert on this topic, need to read more

I have some real animal part items, purchased exclusively from local tribal members. I have a family friend who is, as Americans call then, Ojibwe, and I am routinely invited to gatherings. It led to my majoring in anthropology. I have items made from deer skin and sinew, rabbit skin, and porcupine quills made from animals hunted for food and treated with respect. I also have natural shed items like antler, feathers (not eagle, never eagle). I also have no opposition to antique furs. Different time, different mindset. The animal is long dead, there's no changing that. It's the decision to continue making new furs I don't like.
