All great works of art, music and architecture like Cathedrals were inspired either by the natural world, human relationships or the notion of a divine creator. In religious music, religious art and the architecture of a cathedral such things could never have come about if you weren't divinely inspired. So even though Richard appreciates these great works of art he sees them as fiction. Believe me if the creators of these great works believed it was fiction they would never have been created. They genuinely believed they were doing the work of God or to praise God by creating these masterpieces. That's what drove them to create them in the first place.

I think religion robs from us the opportunity to truly grieve. How dismissive can someone be when they say something like, “We all miss grandma but she’s in heaven now.” To me, grieving as an atheist can carry so much more emotion because we don’t think there’s going to be a second chance. And frankly, there are a lot of rotten people in this world who are also our family members. Do you honestly want to spend eternity with these people? My grandmother was a toxic, abusive alcoholic who wrecked her children. Can you imagine spending eternity with someone like that?

Why "Deal" with death? It just happens and I am no more. My Mom passed away and I was in such raw pain, but I know I will never see my mother again, so in a way, this finality gives me comfort to move on with my life and try to honor mom through my actions. If I fretted over my death (other than not wanting to die), it may suggest my personal belief system has flaws within myself. I have too many flaws, I cannot handle another one based on imagination.
