Just finished. As a parent of a daughter this book def wrecked me… cried hard. Pet Semetary also wrecked me as a parent of a son too ha. Nobody writes being a parent quite like King.

Wonderful video Chris! I love the idea of highlighting regions or countries that don't get enough love for their cinema. I was vaguely aware of RMN, but it's one I'll certainly seek out now as it sounds really interesting, and of course disturbingly relevant. I've never heard of Everyone in our family before, or Jude as a director, but it's another one I'll add to my list for the next Arrow sale for sure. Following on from our mutual enjoyment for Lunana: A yak in the classroom, Bhutan would be a great one to highlight. I mentioned how much I like the film on reddit and someone recommended me Travellers and Magicians, another well received film from there. I still need to pick it up (I think there is just a US DVD release of it, and the shipping is like £6 which keeps putting me off!), but I wonder if there is more to discover from that country.

You've sent me down a rabbit hole lol. I watched the Cup by the same director as Travellers and Magicians and it was a thoughtful, quiet film that has some recognisable themes and ideas. I'd never have thought about Bhutan so I'll need to carve out a bit of time to find them as well as watch them. There is a neverending pit of incredible cinema out there that is begging to be discovered :) Appreciate the comment and inspiration as always buddy.

A great idea for a video series, not least for causing me to realise that the only Romanian film I've seen is Puiu's The Death of Mr Lazarescu, which is, I recall, a worthwhile watch, if also sighing, black comedy of a sad situation. I've owned 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days on DVD since it was released, but despite picking it off the shelf a few times, I've never managed to find the right time to forcibly depress myself (you'll tell me it's a laugh riot now!). Of course, I'm now going to have my head turned by Second Run's Everybody in our Family. Those Second Run releases often seem bleak and turn out a treat.

Good video Chris. It has finally dawned on my that your videos remind me a little of moviedrome. Thanks, Chris! I’m a big fan of Second Run releases. They are probably the most underrated label here in the UK. Just about every single one of their films that I’ve seen has been excellent. I never think twice about buying their films if I like the sound of them. Romanian films are probably one of the least released films for a European country. I must confess that I have seen several of them but would struggle to name them. My bad. I try to see as many East European films as possible, so I watched this post immediately I saw it. Because politically right-wingers have picked on this issue, even before the current public misbehaviour began, it’s good to get a sense of how other societies view these social issues, isn’t it? Immigrants are vital to most countries, but due to politics of various types, they are under-valued and put down in many ways. Likewise, when it comes to parenting, men are often down-played in their roles for a variety of reasons, many self-inflicted as a group if not by individuals. I could not have failed to parent my daughter under any circumstances I can imagine, but not all males feel the same. Men are not even the best talkers, often, in terms of dealing with the most important issues that families face. I will look this film out. Thanks for covering these two films, Chris, they sound like excellent choices for investigation.
@chrismohan
@chrismohan 13 күн бұрын
I completely agree Richard. Even the most experimental films on Second Run carry plenty of interest. Its the label that would make the best film school if I was to limit myself to one label, I fear East European cinema is still quite hard to come by in the UK, and feels like such a great area to find something new and interesting. Couldn't agree more about the important role immigration plays in supporting the economy of many countries. We rarely hear about this side of the story, which is very disappointing. Portrayal of men in terms of family is always going to be a work in progress. My children are the most important part of my life - superceding my own existence but as you note, not all men feel the same. Really appreciate your comments, really thoughtful. Take care

Good topic, Chris. I’d be interested to see both of these. For Mungiu the only film of his I have seen so far is 4 Weeks 3 Months and 2 Days which was really impactful, a great movie. And for Jude, I have only seen the bizarrely named Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, which went in to some really interesting discussion area before getting to quite a wild ending. I’m not sure how many other Romanian films I have seen, possibly only The Death of Mr Lazarescu

Hey Chris, some great watches there! A few that I'm keen to see, like All that money can buy, which sounds really interesting. I got Eureka's edition of Faust a while back which I still need to see, so perhaps a double feature awaits me. Also I was thinking of skipping The Landlord, but very curious to check it out now! I certainly need to see more of Hal Ashby, but clearly there's more to this one than I thought at first sight. I also loved Lunana, and I couldn't agree more about it being schmaltzy, but like yourself, I loved that about it. It's hard not to fall in love with the place and the people as you watch it, and my goodness Bhutan looks breathtaking.

Watched 18 years in prison today, which was as good as the other 2 Tai Kato films that they have released. I never picked up Lake Mungo but may do so now. Those LE sets are sometimes worth the money. If only I could give them up... :)

“The Landlord” sounds like a good time, will definitely check it out! As for myself, I recently had a great experience with three Orson Welles movies: “The Third Man” (1949 Film Noir), “Touch of Evil” (1958 Film Noir) & “Chimes at Midnight” (1966 Historical Comedy-Drama adapted on the various Shakespeare plays with the Character of John Falstaff). Some of my other recent watches that I can recommend are: “Chinatown” (1974 Neo Noir), “Witness” (1985 Neo-Noir set among the Amish), “Richard III” (1995 Period Drama adaptation of the Shakespeare play), “Heat” (1995 Neo Noir), “Master & Commander” (2003 Epic Naval War Drama, perhaps my favorite film ever, yearly rewatch!), “Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy” (2011 Cold War Spy Drama), “Hail, Caesar!” (2016 Coen Brothers Comedy set in 1950’s Hollywood), “Emma” (2020 Romantic Period Comedy adaptation of the Jane Austen Novel) & “Tar” (2022 Psychological Drama about a female conductor accused of misconduct)!

So many wonderful films seen there. Chinatown is top tier filmmaking and is probably in my top 25 films of all time. I went through a Welles season last year, watching The Trial, Chimes at Midnight and The Immortal Story one after the other. I think Chimes at Midnight needs reappraisal in his filmography. It's fantastic. Tar is utterly fabulous. Never felt it's runtime and I love how it just represents the events without forcing the viewer to make a judgement call while watching. Always hoping for a good release of Master and Commander. Hopefully soon so that I can do a proper rewatch. Thanks for the recommendations, I've added Emma and I need to dig out Tinker Tailor out of the shrink-wrap :)

@@chrismohan Indeed! Inspired by this (and some hilarious Criterion Closet videos), I have made a Criterion List of my own (with a limit of only one film per director): The Roaring Twenties (1939, Walsh) Bitter Rice (1949, De Santis) Seven Samurai (1954, Kurosawa) *1 The Seventh Seal (1957, Bergman) Spartacus (1960, Kubrick) *1 La Dolce Vita (1960, Fellini) Contempt/Le Mepris (1963, Godard) The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964, Demy) The Flight of the Phoenix (1965, Aldrich)*2 Chimes at Midnight (1966, Welles)*3 Andrei Rublev (1966, Tarkovsky) Belle de Jour (1967, Bunuel) Le Samurai (1967, Melville) In the Heat of the Night (1967, Jewison) Shaft (1971, Parks) Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975, Weir) Tess (1979, Polanski)*4 The Elephant Man (1980, Lynch) The Long Good Friday (1980, Mackenzie) Risky Business (1983, Brickman) A Room with a View (1986, Ivory) The Princess Bride (1987, Reiner)*5 Do the Right Thing (1989, Lee) Thelma & Louise (1991, Scott) The Fisher King (1991, Gilliam)*6 Hard Boiled (1992, Woo)*7 The Age of Innocence (1993, Scorsese)*8 The Thin Red Line (1998, Malick) *1-Picking just one Kurosawa or Kubrick movie is HARD! *2-Felt I had to have a Jimmy Stewart movie in there (same with “The Roaring Twenties” for both Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney), classic “Dad” movie (would have chosen either “The Guns at Navarone” or “To Kill A Mockingbird” for Gregory Peck, or “All the President’s Men” or “Spy Game” for Robert Redford, if they were on the list) *3-I would be lying if I did not say “Citizen Kane” is his best work, but I am more in the mood of “Chimes” right now. *4-Would have picked “Chinatown” if it was in the Collection, but still, very powerful movie! *5-Had such a hard time choosing between this and “This is Spinal Tap”! 😆 *6-Oh, how I miss that beautiful soul Robin Williams! 😭 *7-“The Killer” might be Woo’s most “esthetic” movie, but I do like this one better all together. *8- Prehaps my most controversial pick, passing over Scorsese’s 70s & 80s Classics, but I do have a big weak spot for this one! Also have to mention the fact that RUSS MEYER(!😆) is in the Criterion Collection with “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” (1970) (while there are NO Steven Spielberg movies, and neither “Lawrence of Arabia”, “Bridge over River Kwai” or “Dr. Zhicago” by David Lean are on it), is downright hilarious to me!😂 I might actually have picked “Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill!” if that were his entry in the Collection! 🤣

What an endeavour! An incredible list of films no matter how you see it. I''m a big Scorcese fan but Age of Innocence is so clearly his best movie for me. It transcends everything else he has made and I can connect with it emotionally in ways that leave some of his other great works in their wake. I'm actually a fan of Faster Faster. I remember watching it as a teenager and being my first proper appreciation of exploitation cinema. I was confused and intrigued by its strong visual style and challenging use of sexuality. I'd love a good release of that and Criterion could do with more genre picks in general, but accept that is a very sought after type of title in the boutique blu ray world. I'll keep this list and refer back to it. Thanks Mac :)

The Promised Land (2023, Artel: Danish 18th Century Historical Fiction “Western” with Mads Mikkelsen as a retired soldier whom by royal decree is attempting to cultivate the Danish moors, set up against the local nobility that wants the land for themselves) PS: Apologies for keeping you on but have you seen “Restoration” (1995, Hoffman: 17th Century Historical Drama against the 1666 London Plague and City Fire with Robert Downey Jr., Sam Neill as Charles II, David Thewlis, Hugh Grant etc.), just saw an upgraded trailer and it really peaked my interest! It doesn't go as deranged as say Gothic, but the normal interactions are definitely heightened. It's one of those things, it annoyed me in Gothic on one watch and not so much on the second, but I think you know what you are getting with Russell. Hey, Chris. Welcome back. Glad to hear you have been taking some time for yourself and finding some different coping mechanisms. The glasses look good. I hope you continue to feel healthier and happier. Take good care of yourself. As for going to the cinema by oneself haha, that’s the story of my life

Hey Neil. Thanks for the message. I have to admit the glasses are really growing on me. I've even managed not to forget them as much recently. I have plenty of great videos to catch up from yourself, which is always a treat. This solo cinema club should be a secret society or something ... I hope you're keeping well :)

Good to see you back Chris. I love your film and book reviews so will be subscribing to both channels please. and as @SteveTalksBooks says, you are far from a bad friend, at least in my experience.

Thanks Alex. You've been a real source of comfort for me over the past year and getting to know you has been one of the real bright spots in that period. Looking forward to catching up soon. I hear there's a hangout this weekend... :D

You helped me as much as I helped you @@chrismohan There is indeed a hangout this weekend. I am looking forward it as I missed the last one. CITEF is also finished first draft and I am part way through editing. Would you like to read the rest of it?

Hey Chris, I'm so glad to see you back, I've really missed your videos! So sorry to hear you've been unwell, and hope you are very much getting better and doing better. I actually went through some similar things last year with work, and being forced to take quite a prolonged leave for my health. I also found enourmous solace in going to the cinema on my own as it happens, which as you say helps you to get out of the house, but also provides some wonderful escapes and experiences. Thank goodness for cinemas! If you decide to make any videos on the experiences, I look foward to watching them. Really looking forward to seeing what you have in store on the channel going forward as well. I think it's so important to be talking about things that excite you, and making videos that you are having fun making, and importantly at your own pace, as youtube can make that tough after a while as it starts to push you down certain avenues. Hope you find a new lease of life with making the videos that you want to make, and I for one can't wait to watch them! Once again, delighted to see you back!

Cheers mate. I really appreciate the message. It's funny. When I was going to the cinema on a Tuesday afternoon etc I was often reminded of your instagram posts in Curson and can only think of the multitude of cinema experiences I may have missed out on over that period if I didn't embrace it. Extremely underrated. I've enjoyed so many of your videos recently. Love the stride you've hit and the mix you've found. They are always so thoughtful and provoke good analysis in me. I need to get round to commenting and hope Rebecca found you well :) Hope to catch up soon :)

Going to the cinema by yourself is a great way to unwind. Glad to see you back in my feed, and I would disagree that you're a bad friend. It's the opposite.

Thanks Steve. I don't know what I would have done without our little group over the past 6 months. The Friday nights etc have become a burst of enjoyment into every week. I am massively thankful to you all and look forward to continuing on :)

Welcome back Chris, sorry to hear you've been unwell. I've been through similar breaks on my channel. Life can sometimes get in the way of things, and occasionally actively discourage you from doing things like this. I appreciate the honesty, try not to beat yourself up for not posting too - as your wellbeing is more important. Looking forward to seeing some new content from you! Adapting to different style and niches within your channels and KZfaq is a challenge. Make the content you want to make, and the second channel gives you a little more freedom. Looking forward to your new stuff! Bit cheeky of me here, but if you'd be up for a collab or discussion on films or collecting give me a shout!

Thanks Sam. I really appreciate the message and you still being around. I've always been a fan of anything you could find the time and energy to put into. Would love to do a collab of some sort - we have a lot of common ground so I'm sure we can find something interesting to dive into! If you've any pet projects you'd love to dive into give me a shout and we'll get something sorted. Hope you're keeping well and we''ll speak soon :)
