I find it funny that the recommendation for CBT is to think about your problem in a more positive way. I've always thought one would seek out a psychologist because they were delusional but here it seems to be the goal to become delusional. I can imagine the conversation "Doctor, I am having this issue where everything is too loud. I can't go anywhere or be anywhere where it's tolerable." The doctor says, "Have you tried not caring about it? I highly recommend it, it's how we treat every chronic pain issue. There is no timeline on how much treatment you will need, it could be for the rest of your life. I'll get you set up with a referral to a psychologist who conveniently by law can't say no and you can get started not caring about it soon."

I don't encourage anyone to let a doctor /audiologist perform the LDL (loudness discomfort level) test. It is an invasive test, which means the audiologist put louder and louder beeps to your already damaged ears. It may cause further damage, and your hyperacusis can be even worse. Not to mention, that LDL test has practically zero benefit in treatments. The other test I would avoid if the cause of the hyperacusis is clear (like it was caused by noise exposure) is acoustic reflex test. It is a very similar invasive test that can harm your hearing further.

Where hyperacusis is causing sympathetic nervous system over arousal and they dont normally avoid loud sounds - none of these treatment options are going to do a damn thing. Calming exercises will help, but otherwise you seem to be on your own.

I had heard all this about "real-ear measurements" but wasn't sure if it was maybe just an up-sell for additional, unnecessary services, so it was good to hear it from someone at a university who doesn't have a profit motive.

Excellent overview, helpful to anyone young or old! I wonder if practicing listening to the Northwestern University Auditory Test No.6 (NU-6) or common word lists has been found to be useful as an auditory training practice?

I don’t understand why Furosemide is so widely prescribed when it causes Ototoxicity. My mom was on Lasix for 3 years and lost some hearing and is now nauseous all the time, can’t keep food down, is dizzy and lightheaded with Ototoxity.

I got a hearing test and my hearing is within the normal range. I have sound sensitivity and my tinnitus has gotten a lot worse. Just hearing people speak, especially with sibilant noises like “s” and “t” is painful. The ENT that examined me basically said that my hearing is fine and that it should improve with time. I’m not sure if there’s anything I can do to improve the condition on my own because it’s definitely making my life a lot harder.

Doesn’t matter about one ear having profound hearing loss and one being mild. I had a standard frequency test at ENT they test up to 8,000 and it was good. I also had one at the tinnitus clinic and they test up to 20,000. They said, I had severe-profound extended high frequency hearing loss in right ear it was 10,000. They said, left ear was mild hearing loss. They called it sensory tinnitus with hearing loss and another audiologist was calling it cochlear sensorineural tinnitus with hearing loss. I have been taking metoprolol tartrate for 19 or 20 years. They were telling me that if it was from this medicine my hearing loss in ears would be more even. They said, that thought mine was noise induced because of the difference in the hearing loss of both ears. They said, I have been taking my medicine for so long that this would have already happened if it was from toxicity. Please respond. Thanks.

In 1955 a cancer drug named Krebiozen was developed and released. One of the patients was quickly cured by Krebiozen. After a time the patient's doctor told him, "Krebiozen has been taken from the market because it doesn't work". The patient's cancer returned. The doctor sensed that his cancer patient was very suggestible so the doctor gave him a red pill and told him, "Krebiozen has been fixed, this is the new Krebiozen and will cure your cancer". Again the patient experienced a cure for his cancer. However the newspapers published a story about how Krebiozen had not been fixed, it was off the market". The patient had another relapse and then died from his cancer. Shouldn't hypnosis or suggestion or meditation or EMDR be tried for tinnitus ? In Paris in the 1700's a Doctor Mesmer was curing many patients by waving magnets over their bodies. I would like to see people on KZfaq who claim they were cured of tinnitus take a lie detector test. Only then would I believe them. This would make a great KZfaq channel, especially the test. The people involved in a bonafide cure or improvement would be verified ! Ratings off the charts !

Very good video. At 17:35 some Hyperacusis/Noxocusis sufferers say to always wear ear plugs and stay as quiet as possible at all costs to protect your ears. But I've noticed these people on Facebook etc never improve? I've had H and T for 4 months now and never use ear defence unless of course when doing DIY, concerts etc but I have no improvement yet. The Hyperacusis started with annoying scary fridge, freezer, car sounds, and annoying letter "S" letter sounds. Then that stopped and was replaced by painful kitchen utensil clanging, dishes, cutlery, screaming kids, letter Ssss, and even talking sounds. But now I oddly have no problems with power tools, car, fridge, distant screaming, TV, Radio anymore. Mostly closer up sudden sounds cause pain. As you say I apparently have no hearing loss in the test up to 8000hz, all apparently in normal range. Would the hearing damage if any be in a higher frequency like 15000hz? Was super stessed for 10 years leading up to this and also had Lyme disease in the past but not anymore! Apparently listening to pink noise can somehow improve Hyperacusis? Wtf?

Thanks for cutting through all the hype and marketing! Very informative, and I feel fortunate that I found your clinic and this video. I had been thinking about trying out a Jabra, but truth is, I have severe hearing loss in one ear and moderate loss in the other. My hearing pattern is not flat or simple, so I am now clear that I need Real-Ear measures. Also good to know about the locked device issue, and the bundled vs unbundled approaches. I like the unbundled for the same reason that I prefer Supplemental to Advantage Medicare plans!

My hyperacusis happened after a viral infection in my 20's which caused otorrhea bleeding. Damaged a tensor flexor nerve. Not only do I have the sensitivity to sound but everything turns to static. I have to give it time to equalize out. So I go time to time being deaf because everything turns to static with pain. But I can still hear in a normal range.
