Where does the crank/gear mechanism comes from? Did you made it yourself or you bought it? I'm trying to build a gramophonesque thing myself and I just can't find a feasable way to build the mechanism
@Professor_Sperrmueller6 күн бұрын
This crank/gear mechanism is a weird self-construction of mine😉 The shaft that rotates the turntable (a wooden plate) is a hub from a bicycle front wheel. The axle of the hub is fixed in a piece of wood at the bottom. The wooden turntable is attached to the spoke holes on the “upper” rim of the hub using Spax screws. The crank (tinkered together with a combination of bolts, elbow-connectors and other parts from electronic waste) has a wheel with a “rubber tire” fixed to the other end. This “rubber wheel” touches the "lower" rim of the hub and friction (rubber/steel) causes the hub to rotate when the crank is turned. I hope I could help you a little bit🙂

How to this
@Professor_Sperrmueller9 күн бұрын
You mean how it works? The lotion tubes are "bellows" that blow air through the pipes when they are pressed. This push of air makes them sound. The different pitches of these "stopped pipes" are determined by their different lengths (air duct) inside. Long duct = deep tone; short duct = high note.
@GrandmasterGib17 күн бұрын
So is flexing the PVC creating much tonal change or is mostly the petal? Would love to hear it played clean.
@Professor_Sperrmueller17 күн бұрын
Yes, flexing the PVC loosens the tension of the string and produces a deeper tone. In the first half of the video, before I use the wah-wah pedal, you can actually hear it quite clean.

What material is the „neck?
@Professor_Sperrmueller24 күн бұрын

Music sounds good, what record is that?
@Professor_Sperrmueller25 күн бұрын
This is a German shellac recording of Jacques Offenbach's "Barcarolle" from the opera "The Tales of Hoffmann". The song is played by the orchestra "Palais de Danse", Berlin. The record label is called "Beka" and I assume the recording is from the 1920s.

I have to agree with whiterabbit8329 about just how cool this is! I came across this looking at much more complicated open end pvc tubulums with lots of elbows, etc. Were I to try to copy this, here in the U.S., I would try to convert your measurements to inches and use 2" PVC pipe (25mm = 1"), the thinnest I could find--yours looks pretty thin! So clever how you've used smaller PVC pipe to anchor everything together, using (I think) machine screws with kep nuts inside "note" tubes? I also like the single-point stand, which I'm guessing is located at the "balance point"... Love the "paddles not required" ability to play with fingers, thanks to those thin plastic cups!
@Professor_SperrmuellerАй бұрын
I'm sorry I'm only replying now, but unfortunately KZfaq didn't forward your comment to me, which is normally the case. I just came across it by chance today. The pvc pipes I play on have an outer diameter of 50 mm. That corresponds to the two inches you mentioned. The smaller pipes, which serve to anchor everything together, have a diameter of only 40 mm. But they are only for the structure and stability and not for sound production anyway. I didn't use any machine screws and nuts at all, because it's almost impossible to mount and tighten them inside the very narrow pipes. Instead, I used "spax" drywall screws for the whole construction. They tighten up well in pvc. The stand is a microphone-stand - you are right - at the balance point! I am pleased that you like the instrument. Thank you🙂
