great video!! Just a beginnet fot this coming season for backcountry. Can you give me advice which boots are better for me as I dont want to buy different boots for touring and resort skiing. I am looking for a boots that i can use in both. Also which binding should i match with the boots you will recommend. Thanks a lot
@MountainVibes24 күн бұрын
I use the Tecnica Cochise, mainly because they fit my feet well. There are other options out there (k2 mindbender, Salomon Shift Pro). It all depends on what fits you. But these boots will do what you're asking for. As for bindings, the only true hybrid bindings on the market are the Marker Duke PT, Cast Free Tour, and the Salomon Shift. Each have their pros and cons.

Super-wide skis are not a good solution for touring. In fresh snow, you are going to sink anyway and it would be actually harder to break the trail with wider skis. Wide skis are terrible when skinning up on steep traverses, other things being equal they are also heavier, leave alone that if somebody with narrower skis is breaking the trail and you are behind, you would need essentially to break it again. IMHO, something like 95mm is the max for touring skis, unless you are a big mountain superman.

does moving the binding a little forward from recommended mount change the turn radius of the ski

No, but might make it easier to load if you’re usually backseated

It would be nice to rent boots of various stiffness and ski them for day. But my feet and ankles don't line up like humans so I need a really fit boot.
@sleuth20774 ай бұрын
Does the ski you are using matter when choosing a boot flex? Wouldn't a stiff boot be too much for a lighter and energetic ski and vice versa?

Great video. Always agonize about this decision , along with mount point, so bear with me. I’m 5’11” 160lbs. Advanced directional skier who values agility for trees and moguls over carving on groomers. Also looking to progress with switch and playful/jibby style skiing but don’t plan on spending much time in the park. Have skied 183cm Qst 98 for over 2 seasons and liked them but occasionally second guessed the length when the trees got tight. Picked up a pair of 179 cm (true 178) Dynastar M Free 99s at a great price but im still wondering if the 185 cm (true 182) isn’t the better choice long term. Was also contemplating moving the mount forward a couple cm for switch skiing but I’m a little concerned about shortening the front ends of the 179s too much. Do you think I should just stick at recommended mount (-7cm) with 179? Or would plus 2 cm from recommended mount on the 185 be a good compromise?

im 6'1 135 lbs. Looking to buy armadas arv 94, do you think i should go with the 171 cm's? I have trouble turning quick in trees. Also just started park this season. 15y/o any advice would be great

Although you’re tall, you’re quite light. This length should serve you well. Make it more maneuverable for you.

Maybe just give a size guide for the average skier by height and adjust from there? Very confusing how this is presented.

I've always felt that for anyone above an intermediate level who knows the mechanics of how to bend a ski, you should go with the stiffest boot that you can still flex and get your knee somewhat over your toe. The stiffer the boot you can manage, the better connection you will have with your skis and the better control you will have over what your skis are doing under you on varying terrain.
@stefanpeters50434 ай бұрын
Quick addition: Stiff boots do not mean less comfortable! With today's advanced technologies and a good boot-fitter, the right boot for your foot can be made to feel like bedroom slippers no matter how stiff. 🙂
@elliottdiedrich30684 ай бұрын
I don't completely agree with you about going for the stiffest boot possible. My race boots fit absolutely perfect and were excellent for racing but not ideal for free skiing. They were hard to put on even when warm, impossible to get off when cold gave you bad shin-bang when skiing bumps. For free skiing, I use a much softer boot (Nordica 120) and I love them.
@stefanpeters2984 ай бұрын
@@elliottdiedrich3068 Boot flex also depends not only on your skiing style but on the terrain as well as the ski. So many variables that it's hard to come up with generalizations. I happen to prefer the tightest connection to my skis on any terrain so for example when skiing powder I need to go with a softer ski but I honestly have not had shin-bang in the last 10-15 years. BTW, for those with high arches who struggle with getting cold boots off and on, look at Tecnica. I think they've solved the problem.

Hi - Good video and I have 2 questions about this that are somewhat related: 1) I have an older pair of Hart F-17T's and they do not appear to have any manufacturer's markings on them like you discuss here to tell how the bindings have been mounted relative to the recommended positions. So, is there a way I can know their positioning now? 2) The first question really comes from the fact that I'm preparing to buy new skis and bindings and wish to tell the new installers how the bindings were positioned. The thing is, the bindings were installed on a demo rail and are adjustable. They are right in the correct spot for me, but with no markings on the skis and with these rail mountings, I don't know how to inform the installer of the binding location that is ideal for me. Hope you can help out.
@MountainVibes4 ай бұрын
That's tough to find out when the skis are older. Is there no notch, or indent on the top of the skis somewhere in the middle of the bindings? You may have to jump on some ski forms and ask previous owners how they had their skis mounted. Most demo jigs are at a set width to drill the plates. Depending on what bindings they are, a shop may be able to tell you where the center mark is by laying a jig over top.

question if I am having an fischer rc4 the curve 2022, and the camber is almost gone - does that mean the ski is dead and needs to be exchanged? or is it still useable?
@MountainVibes4 ай бұрын
The skis are usable, but they won't perform they way they should. How many days do you have on them? I would contact Fisher, and see if you can potentially get them warrantied. For the camber to "die" that quick, seems like a manufacturing thing.

I’m curious to know if the company developed / tested their skis with and recommend a particular brand of binding. What binding did you test them with? Also, thanks for testing the 80mm width. It’s a great size for East coast hard snow conditions.
@MountainVibes5 ай бұрын
I had a Marker Griffon Demo binding on it. I would imagine that’s what is used for all their test skis.

Never paid more than 80 notes for a pair of goggles, and mostly its been less than that. Normally it'll be around 50 notes in the season end sales, and you get an excellent pair for that. The Dragon D1XT pairs i bought 8 years ago are still in perfect condition now. And recently bought a pair of Spect Red Bull goggles for 50 notes. Again a good pair for a reasonable price. That said while i was looking i did see some eye-wateringly bad prices for some like Gucci and YNIQ. The reality of which is they will not make you a better skier because they are more expensive 🙂

All their skis have two sheets of titanal except for the citadel which is carbon fiber instead(also stiff). Seems like their tech and carbon might make for an interesting pairing. If I could have only picked one for this review I would have picked the 88. The 98 probably would have been better too so as to compare it more to the meat of the market. I ski 102’s and 92’s most of the time in the Rockies. Only occasionally bringing out the carving rippers aka one trick ponies.

very nice video I am a more cautious skier after a shoulder injury a few years ago; thus speed is less important vs techniques. My question for the expert is the balance between rocker vs camber for someone who's doing mostly frontside slopes with some moguls, what skis do you recommend? I am looking at the Salomon QST vs Nordica enforcer or the Rossi Sender 94 or volkl mantra at 163 cm I am currently skiing an older Salomon shoganwith 100+ under foot not great in terms of carving nor bumps. thanks very much

Hey! Thank you so much for this video. You are the first who explained WHY narrow waist is more for beginners. I have only one set of ski (mantra m6 ) with 96mm waist and turning radius 14m! I would say that my level is close to intermediate ( I started to carve but my carving level is beginner ) and it seems that I bought set of ski which is more propriate for advanced level. Usually I go in the morning for groomed slope. It seems that I need to by another set of ski to learn carving faster and easier. Is that true?
