I made a lithium ion battery for an ultima LCD 2KVA EURO ups The battery was as follows: 30 cell bak high drain 4.2 v 3 A 5. The batteries were placed in 5 columns and 6 rows and thick nickel stripe was used for spot welding. I used BMS 6S.The problem is that in few seconds, not more than a minute, the battery gets extremely hot and smoke begins to appear. Please explain the error.

what about car batteries. 1 for 12v, 2 in series for 24v, and 3 in series for 36v. do you know if that work too? and IF yes, do you think there is a limit for paralell conections?

You don't need to worry about minimum voltage if the battery has an internal BMS with low voltage cut-off.

Hi. I'm doing the same connector. Do you know what are those two little cables that you just shorted in a socket. I haven't opened cables yet to see if they continues further. Maybe it's a resistance check circle. Have your car shoved any system errors after assembly?

cant i just slap on a bms to mitigate the minimum discharge voltage of the 12v ups 4 cells pack as in the bms will shutoff the connection when the discharge voltage reaches 11v therefore keeping the battery safe

Some UPS motherboard are having some resistors around an OpAmp to set this 8.7v low discharged and 12.6v high charged (replaceable by a adjustable small resistor or 2) on you tube I seen once a video on Eaton Elipse UPS for modded Li Ion 12v/9Ah Lead case to 12v/14Ah battery I cannot find it anymore (you must have MB schematic diagram to identify resistors)... If someone find it... Or knows how...

My leaf was 100% dead (none of the ignition sounds, etc, which you got when you tried to start). When we hooked it to the other car with the jumper cables, it started (without jumping it). It was drawing power from the other battery. When it was unhooked from the jumper cables, it went dead again. How can you jump a car that starts without a jump? I hope that makes some sense).
@LeafXpack18650
@LeafXpack18650 7 ай бұрын
As soon as you connect the cables to the other vehicle, power from the good battery is transferred to the dead one, this is normal and actually the correct method. The Nissan Leaf needs very little power to power up. It's actually preferable to not start the other vehicle as the increased voltage could damage the Leaf. Once the Leaf is powered up (turned on). You can safely disconnect the booster cables as the onboard dc-dc will charge up the 12v battery. However, if the 12v battery is bad, it may not accept a charge and may not restart the car the next time either.

Very cool series. I am on the cusp of purchasing one of these with a similar project in mind, and I have some questions, but there is very little info out there, even directly from the dealership. My main question is whether there is an OEM voltage converter that allows the machine to support 12v accessories or is that something you have to rig up yourself?

how about connecting 2 diodes to the charging cable to decrease cell charging voltage by around ~1-1.4V, and 1 diode in the opposite direction not to lose much when discharging?

Great idea. I'm want to try this with LTO (lithium titanate). Compared with ternary Li-ion batteries and LFP, LTO is virtually indestructible. Capable of 2-3 times as many charge cycles, they don't burn and they can operate at far lower temperatures than LFP. They don't have the energy density of ternary Li-ion or LFP but for this application they should be more than adequate. My Leaf uses a 13.0V float charge so five in series will provide an operating range of 12V (2.4V per cell) to 13.0V (2.6V per cell)

Perhaps I missed it but you *really* need a BMS to monitor the voltage across each li-ion cells. Connecting up li-on batteries in series like this is potentially dangerous - dangerous in that you could have one cell have a thermal run-away event and cook off (catch on fire) and ignite the others. Sooner or laters li-on connected like this WILL get un-balanced (their individual voltages will begin to drift). Do a quick youtube search of have scary even one of these cells cooking off like that. The BMS board will protect against the individual cells from getting un-balanced - but its not a cure all for all risks. Even WITH a BMS board if I was doing this I would have the batteries in a NATO style 7.62MM ammo can - to contain the fire. And even than I would want to have that can located away from anything that might ignite.

If you read the voltage with reversed polarity you'll likely see a slightly different value. I'm not exactly sure why but it happens with all my meters typically about a 2mv difference

The difficulty of using the 3S config is: 1. You absolutely must have a BMS. While the low side disconnect is below that of the UPS shut off, the high side will absolutely cook a 3 s without it. The BMS should disconnect charging... is the changeover quick enough for UPS?

I want to do this project but instead of a battery, I want to use a 4KW inverter generator which I will modify to output DC and the generator will be on while the car drives. I worry that it may throw errors if current flows back into the battery as I suspect the current sensor is inside the battery.

I think what took so long is you tried balancing before clearing the 3.35-3.40V threshold. Attempting to balance during the flat part of the curve is not actually balancing since voltage only correlates to SOC from 2.5 to 2.8’ish and 3.40 to 3.65. In between that if you’re pulling down the highest cells to the lowest cell that happens to be 3.29 or lower you could be pulling down a 20Ah pack by 4, 5 or 6 Ah as the low cell takes it sweet time in the flat part of the curve. 3.27 could be 70% imcould be 50%. Best to set the pack to 3.45*12 and then see where your highest cell is. Inch it up so your highest cell is at 3.55. At this point decide if you want to take the charge or discharge route. If you have one low outlier individually charge that cell. If you have just one or two high cells then put a load on them and charge the pack at a rate that matches the load. Use light bulbs or power resistors. A 1ohm 100W resistor is $6 and gives you 3.5’ish amps if the voltage is 3.5. A 0.1 ohm resistor gives you 35 amps but that does push the resistor at its max power rating of 100W. Use two in series for a 0.2ohm to get 17 amps and charge the pack at 14 amps so you still get a discharge from your high cell if that suits your fancy. If you have to constantly adjust your set up because you have one or more runner groups you might just want to consider salvaging the cells from the pack but label them all first so you know which came from the problem groups. Then you can rebuild a pack with cells that are already top balanced by doing the long row of cells in parallel trick up to 3.6V method. I’ve just never had much luck with these balancers trying to fix a pack that’s out of whack under 3.30V. It takes forever but if you have an hour or two to kind of keep an eye on it you can charge these cells fast enough to get it done manually.

Does the Ups try to float charge or equalize the new lithium battery ? Lithium needs constant current /voltage. So basically a on off type of charger. What's stopping this ups from floating a battery not designed to float charge ???
