It doesn’t hurt anymore, I’m quite used it now! They do get a bit sore and dry after swimming though so I tend to put goggles on if I’m swimming for more than an hour or so

I'm not a freediver merman, but if I'm willing to swim in a good realistic mer-tail, do I have to be a professional swimmer in order to hold the weight?

You don’t have to be a professional but you definitely want to be a strong swimmer! Never swim alone, especially in a tail. Check out some mermaid safety videos before you start, Haley Mermaid has some good ones!
