Never thought I would find someone who had my exact thoughts on this. They are different people from OG to remakes, and the timeline can't be treated like a single unbroken thing because RE5 Jill is just a straight up different person. And WESKER! His new voice actor isn't *_bad_* per say, but he's *_generic._* Albert fucking Wesker is not *_generic._* He has a commanding, nasally tone almost akin to Vergil. He's distinct, he stands out, and when he speaks, it's always clearly him. His voice actor being let go because of false allegations or some shit is just heartbreaking. They didn't even get someone similar. I can't say the same about Ada. To be blunt, her new voice actor is just bad. She puts no emotion or weight in the performance. Compare RE4 Leon getting chainsawed with RE4 Ada. She's worse in every way, I think. With the exception of RE4 Leon... I just don't like the remakes. I hope they don't do weird shit with Chris and Sheva if they do remake 5. I hope somehow, miraculously, they change Jill and Wesker back against all odds. But I know, logically... those versions we love are just memories in the past now, and we won't be getting them going forward. That hurts, man.

@@InfiniteEscuro I feel all that and I hard, hard, HARD agree on Wesker, like what the actual fuck. I think ultimately it was a game that was a victim of its own overhype and just didn't live up to the standards of Super Metroid or Metroid Prime - games that were both considered pretty much instant all time classic masterpieces consensus close to 10/10 games when they released. If memory serves developers before the game were calling this the best Metroid game ever made and the hype was fever pitch after the awesome trailers. Ultimately the game just didn't clear the ridiculously high bar it and the fans had set for it.

I have such a rocky history with Other M. I was in Metroid heaven after the release of Prime Trilogy and remember being so hyped for Other M and even preordering it. While I enjoyed the gameplay and the more cinematic approach to telling the story, the characterization of Samus is what ultimately ruined it for me. Had it been a prequel to Zero Mission and been about how Samus came into being the stoic bounty hunter we know and love, I think it would've solved a LOT of problems.

Something almost nobody seems to know about, is the Varia suit dynamic was reversed in the English and Japanese versions. Adam was begging Samus to enable her Varia suit in the Japanese version, while in the English version he was granting her permission to use it. And neither works. In one, Adam was being a dumbass, in the original, Samus was being a childish dumbass.

Yesterday I clicked on a thread "should other m be remade?". I thought surely its time we are past this nonsense and people can see the game in a new light. but nope. it was nonstop apeshit hatred of the likes i have never seen, for ANY game. Just completely ridiculous. Other M has a few minor issues, but id play it over Samus Returns any day. In fact it probably ranks somewhere on the top for all my Metroids. By no means is it perfect, the spammable dodging is a bit too mindless, the story is badly paced and structured, but otherwise? There are a lot of Mrtroid games that have way more bothersome issues in my opinion and comprehending what brought about this unison of hate is seriously beyond me.

Because it came out at a time where 2D Metroid (the ones from which Other M actually took inspiration) was dormant and the fanbase mostly cared only about the Prime series for the 3D approach, so when they saw a 3D Metroid playing differently compared to the Prime series they raged about it. Then new fans (or even not fans) assumed it was bad because they saw Prime fans rage about it on the internet, the mob mentality that Duck pointed out in the video is just so true. I'll give a really hot take: *Other M was doomed to fail, no matter in what circumstances* . Even if it had a different story, different controls and even if Samus PTSD and the authorization mechanic had been removed, *it would have ended with the same result, I'm absolutely certain of this and I'll die on that hill* . Many fans simply wanted a new Prime game, period. This is the elephant in the room that many people choose to not consider. And Other M posed a threat for the future of the Prime series, and it's because of that, that it was and still is harshly mistreated. Now that the mainline series and the Prime series go hand in hand without getting in each other's way, I think it's time for 2D Metroid to retake the 3D route from where it left off.

The whole why does Samus listen to Adam thing kinda makes me really mad that people dont get it. This dude was her commanding officer. As a bounty hunter she cant just do what she wants. You think Dog the Bounty Hunter doesnt have to answer to local police and that he wouldn't have to listen to any of their commands? I know its a wierd analogy but it s really the same thing. Imagine instead of the federation its the Cops about to arrest someone. Dog is tracking the same person. When he gets there police are already there. Real life tells us that police in this scenario would be the ones in charge. So why do people think Samus shouldn't have to listen to authority thats already in place? Its also very clear in the beginning that she is tagging along and not the one in charge of this mission.

55:38 "Seems to predate even Skyward Sword"; "Despite Skyward Sword not happening yet".....uh......what?! Eventhough the Goddess or MasterSword are not visible or mentioned on screen, or any of the points mentioned thereafter, doesn't mean that this isn't post-SkywardSword. Ok ok, I shouldn't get ahead of myself here. This video was made a year ago, so maybe things have changed since then. But still......how did you come to that conclusion back then? The 2 most prevalent theories I'm aware of at this point, that BotW/TotK are either set sooooooo far down the timeline that anything which took place in the existing timeline thus far happened dozents if not hundrets of aeons ago.....or that both games are set up to exist within their own continuity and they only took the existing games as a blueprint. The latter theory stems from concepts such as...the MasterSword being able to break in BotW/TotK or that "evil stuff" (namely Gloom) can now damage it, eventhough we were always led to believe in lore that it's this impervious almighty sword, the sword of evils bane that nothing else but the chosen hero can touch. Then there's the Triforce which seems completely absent in both BotW/TotK, outside of a few symbols "here and there", aswell as the full Triforce glowing on Zeldas backhand during certain scenes...which has led some to theorize that Zelda now has the full Triforce which apparently now seems to be passed down through the bloodline of the goddess rather than being a physical obtainable item as it was depicted as in previous games. Nintendo really didn't do us much of a favor with these two games.

@@avon_c6199 BotW clearly took place insanely far into the future, and established that clearly. My assumption at the time (albeit, reasoned out only in my head and not made with external research or reference to other fan theories) was that the ancient Zonai ruled version of Hyrule predated Skyward Sword both because of the Hylia and Master Sword stuff (which is as much proof of their absence as anything - ain’t nobody in these games ignores the existence of the Master Sword) and because even in Skyward Sword, they were merely reviving Hyrule - a version of it had clearly existed before the Hero of the Sky descended. It seems logical that the ancient of Hyrule seen in TotK could be that one, especially since Skyward Sword had ancient robots which at least conceptually resemble the Zonai Constructs. I don’t see how this was such an outlandish conclusion. The biggest wrench in the theory is, like I said, Ganon’s presence. Additionally, this would be the only Ganon to date who is implied to be an independent incarnation, rather than the guy from Ocarina having achieved immortality via the Triforce of Power. This is really weird on account of being a first for the series. At this point though, I feel like the Breath duology is more of an alternate canon, or at the very least TotK is.

My gripes with TotK: 1. Flight. With this, I don't have to engage with 90% of the world. 2. Lack of Guardians. This one enemy and the piano music always added a threat no matter where you were. Even with issue #1, I bet these guys would have been awesome. 3. Same areas. I feel a certain way after visiting the same areas, like....there's nothing new here. Sure, things have changed, but it's not new enough. If the areas were new enough, I'd forgo my issue #1. 4. This is more of a feeling, but a lot of it felt like "work" and not "fun". I felt a lot of time is wasted "making stuff" when I just want to have fun fighting. But now fighting is trivialized by #1.

Other M was flawed, but good. Samus Returns also had big flaws, but Mercury Steam literally fixed every problem SR had, and then some with Metroid Dread. Speaking of Mercury Steam and Metroid Dread, Metroid Dread does feel like what Other M should have been, even though it's 2D, it way it controls, the 3D graphics, and the overall smoothness feel like Other M, except polished to a mirror sheen. Because of that, I think Mercury Steam's next Metroid game should be a 3rd person 3D Metroid game. If anyone can nail the formula, it's them. I agree with you that I prefer a 3rd person Metroid game to a 1st person Metroid game. With a few tweaks, non-linear game structure, better story, actual analog controls (controlling Other M with a D-pad was a terrible idea, surprised you didn't mention it at all), the game could be amazing. A 3rd person Metroid game is harder to make than a 1st person game, but it's the style that Retro originally wanted to make, it was Miyamoto that insisted on Prime being 1st person. It's also the style that a lot of Metroid fans actually still want, even the ones that hate Other M, will agree that the 3rd person concept shouldn't be abandoned, but by hating on Other M, they're essentially telling Nintendo that they should.

Having them be skippable in a SECOND playthrough makes literally no bearing on how unforgivably bad they are

Being able to skip your least favorite part of an experience on subsequent visits is a huge W. Can you skip the artifact hunt in Prime? Never. But you can skip the cutscenes in Other M, and that absolutely has bearing on how bad people find them. This was in the pinned comment by the way. Both of these would be better off, from an objective standpoint, as their own, stand alone thing, and NOT in a franchise. EDIT: The rest of your video re-enforced my "last jedi" opinion. @@ThrillingDuck I can get behind your intro, but it doesn't change my opinion at all. The narrative is truly awful, but I hate it as a GAME, and I consider all my reasons warrented. 2D controls in 3D is HORRIBLE, including having to stop to use certain weapons. It sucked in Prime 1's gamecube release too, tank controls ALWAYS suck. The music is bland. The combat sucks ass due to "hit button to dodge with such a gigantic window of time it gets boring", the voice acting besides Adam and Anthony was badly directed by a non native english speaker (and those 2 I can really only credit to their actors skill), and the sectors are ALL rehashes of previous sectors. Come to think of it, on that last point, they tried the same thing as prime 1: it copied supers world and settings to focus on the gameplay. Unlike other m though, that gameplay is actually GOOD. This game failed in execution in almost every possible way. Backtracking is a gimmick at best, I'd be happy if Metroid Prime 4 had NONE. Linearity never bothered me in fusion or other m, because, unlike most Metroid fans, I have intillectual consistency. Dread kinda does the Dread mode but imo Other M hard mode has such a better and fun implementation. It takes away all the reason for looking around by taking Missiles and Energy tanks but tbh I think by doing that I look back on the level design itself more again and got even more of an appreciation on how good the puzzles in the rooms are. But this is an alt mode, so they can experiment however they want as far as I’m concerned. @@ThrillingDuck I liked BoTW for a time, but man idk, I'm just so burnt out on that kind of open world design. Even Elden Ring, it's great in some ways but it's no Bloodborne or Dark Souls and I think that comes mostly down to the focus and economy of level design. It's like Ridge Racer to Forza Horizon to me. Bigger doesn't mean better usually and I feel like Nintendo might get carried away with this and forget the intimacy of old Zelda design. They over corrected imo :(

As far as I'm concerned, as a Zelda player since the SNES days, Nintendo can keep the massive connected overworld if they really really want to, but should scale it down quite a bit and populate it with more thought out tailormade content throughout. No copypasted enemycamps or enemy types that simply scale with your progression, but put some enemies here and there that can very well be "too much" or impossible for a player in the early game. I don't want this "you-can-do-everything-whenever-you-want-however-you-want-from-whatever-angle-you-want" GarrysMod sandbox experience. Give me some more constraints during gameplay, also with puzzlesolving, and don't just hand me the most basic abilities with which I can master everything right from the start. Ingenuity and creativity is more often than not born out of being restricted and having to think, rather than slapping a rocket to a shield and bypassing almost every challenge. If a puzzle only has truely one solution and it's designed to be tough to figure out, THEN SO BE IT. I want my 35yo brain to be challenged by another difficult WaterTemple (the Ancient Zora Waterworks were a MASSIVE missed opportunity) that has the chance of making me mad.

@@esmooth919 You’re talking about the suit acquisition cutscenes and this comment makes no sense. Is it supposed to make a point? What point? I think the traditional Gravity Suit looks fine, just worse than the Varia Suit - ergo I like the aura in Other M. It’s that simple.

20:18 The reason why this design choice was so clunky is because of the way in which we had to execute it, by pointing the lone wiimote at the screen. If Nintendo had just allowed us to use the *_nunchuck_* for movement, this would have been a non-issue. But having to stand still just to use your missiles in the middle of an otherwise heated battle during which you could get *_killed,_* just never sat well with me.

I would actually love for Nintendo to try again to make a 3rd person Metroid game. There was a lot of potential here. I won't deny that, especially with the gameplay elements that were handled by Team Ninja; but it got squandered on some poor design choices! All we really need is a better story and a better control scheme.
@esmooth919

3:10 But here's the thing: what other m was trying to do, Fusion did *_better._* In fact, my biggest problem with this story in particular is that it contradicts a lot of the character that was already established for Samus, not only by many games before, but also by the manga.
@ThrillingDuck
@ThrillingDuck 14 күн бұрын
@@esmooth919 I assume you’re still watching but I acknowledge the Fusion bit a little later in. As for “contradicting Samus’s character” that’s just flat out untrue. It fleshes out a character who we hadn’t heard speak much prior. It only “contradicts,” the vague, mute, psychopath that fans had built up in their heads given her utter LACK of proper characterization prior.
@esmooth919
@esmooth919 14 күн бұрын
@@ThrillingDuckunlike those fans, I never saw Samus as a vague, mute psychopath, especially if you go by the characterization that she got in Metroid 3. And after what she got in Metroid 4, what she got in Other M feels like a slap in the face. Why is Samus so hell bent on her allegiance to this douchebag who's trying to cosplay as Adam Malkovich? If they parted on bad terms, why is she sucking up to him so hard? Especially since in the manga, they parted ways on good terms? My other problems with this game stem from the design choices of the developers, most especially, being forced to use a wiimote like an NES controller in a *_3D game!_* If the story didn't already turn me off, that control scheme definitely did.
@ThrillingDuck
@ThrillingDuck 14 күн бұрын
@@esmooth919 Read the pinned comment for control scheme. Read other comments here for Adam. Long story short, you (like everyone else) are completely overreacting to Samus’s interactions with Adam. It doesn’t “contradict her character” at ALL for her to be concerned with this one guy’s opinion of her.
