Very interesting how different his speaking voice is to his voice as the Doctor!

I worry that these collectors' families won't bother to look into whether their deceased relative's film is lost and instead just recklessly throw it out.

This is better quality than the VHS release!! How did you find it? And I want to project this on my wall, with a real old projector

I purchased it from a private collector many years ago. Not as good as the copy the BBC has, but a wonderful thing to own.

hartnell was an interesting man who understandably, for the time, lied about his background. he wasn’t born in devon to an old devonshire family. he was born in the slums of st. pancras. his mother was unmarried and his father wasn’t listed on his birth certificate, so he had her surname. it’s been said that he attempted to find out who his father was, but never succeeded. so any time he mentioned his ‘father’ in interviews, he’d made up the story entirely. i suppose he wished to portray himself as middle class with a stable background, probably to be taken more seriously as an actor

I never realised how different Hartnell's normal speaking voice was.

This sounds very compressed. Is there a better transfer of the tape anywhere?

@@farfromallover pity. It just sounds like a really low quality mp3, like someone went mental with denoising.

@@farfromallover So who has this tape? You mention it's the only part the BBC has, were they given this exact crappy transfer? It's a tape, so it should be way better than this and I find it hard to beleive this is from the BBC as it is. But then again, if the BBC had it they'd have released it surely.

It's now available to listen for the full 35 minutes for anyone with a BBC account. I don't, as they've alienated me politically over the years, so, in the intervening eight years since this uploading, maybe it was one of the very many Desert Island Discs that were recently found; perhaps someone could say ? It says on Wikipaedia he was born in Acton, London, not Devon. The BBC give the date of this broadcast as the 23rd. August, '65.

I imagine this is what private film collectors who own missing episodes do constantly.

Which would be a shame really, since every time you project film is scratches it and damages it, bit by bit.

@@therestorationofdrwho1865I'm just imagining a Marco Polo episode has gone through this for years and now the collector has realised that it's become damaged more and don't realise that it can be restored and it may end up getting thrown out by ignorant relatives.

*Sighs* I only wish what I saw were episodes not known to currently be in existence. It would provide some hope of more finds.
