This is the only extract the BBC has of this edition of Desert Island Discs and begins with Hartnell's first choice of music.
This interview was previously thought lost forever before being discovered on 29/01/2015. The news was made public by @farfromallover after a lengthy email chain with DID,

Heartbreaking that it cuts off just as he was about to talk about Doctor Who!

Nice that at least something remains; it gives a glimpse of the man behind the character.

What an enlightening interview. It works as a companion piece to the Buskin The Fairy Cobbler interview, highlighting different aspects of his personality. Thank you so much !

It really conveys how amazing his performance as the Doctor is, when you realize the voice is a creative choice rather than his natural choice. Even the "Billy-flubs" were allegedly a creative decision that eventually became scripted because he did it so much. Given how articulate he is here, I'd certainly believe it.

He does. I think he sounds like David Bradley's portrayal of him in 'An Adventure in Space and Time', or rather vice versa. I have a new appreciation for Bradley's vocal performance now!

It's now available to listen for the full 35 minutes for anyone with a BBC account. I don't, as they've alienated me politically over the years, so, in the intervening eight years since this uploading, maybe it was one of the very many Desert Island Discs that were recently found; perhaps someone could say ? It says on Wikipaedia he was born in Acton, London, not Devon. The BBC give the date of this broadcast as the 23rd. August, '65.

@@farfromallover So who has this tape? You mention it's the only part the BBC has, were they given this exact crappy transfer? It's a tape, so it should be way better than this and I find it hard to beleive this is from the BBC as it is. But then again, if the BBC had it they'd have released it surely.

+Craftman Seven Eighty (Craftman780) The BBC had two tapes for each episode. The first copy would be the recording studio's. They'd wipe their tapes soon after completion/televising because they can't afford new tapes. The second copy was in the BBC archives for use in shows like Blue Peter, who frequently use archived footage in their shows. These copies were largely wiped (again; tapes were expensive), though a few copies survived. They weren't rescued by Doctor Who fans, however since they picked tapes at random (hence why Hartnell's departure is lost). Most of the Lost Tapes people find are third copies which were made for international distribution, so they'd be in places like Australia's TV archives (this is why Nigeria was found to have tapes of 'Enemy of the World' a few years ago). Sometimes there's also a FOURTH set of tapes - those are instances where fans tested out their cameras by pointing at their television sets. Some also tested their audio cassette recorders in this manner, hence why all classic episodes (bar the Christmas Special) have recovered audio.

The sales overseas had stopped, repeats were almost unheard of, storing the tapes cost money, and they were reusable or able to make money with them in other ways.

hartnell was an interesting man who understandably, for the time, lied about his background. he wasn’t born in devon to an old devonshire family. he was born in the slums of st. pancras. his mother was unmarried and his father wasn’t listed on his birth certificate, so he had her surname. it’s been said that he attempted to find out who his father was, but never succeeded. so any time he mentioned his ‘father’ in interviews, he’d made up the story entirely. i suppose he wished to portray himself as middle class with a stable background, probably to be taken more seriously as an actor
