Came in here thinking what's the point. Have recently listened to Horowitz and Sultanov play this, both spectacular. This stands up very well. Over the top late-romantic excess, with plenty of piano fireworks, comes across very well, and better recorded than either of the above. Listen.

OK piano playing but the choreography does not work well here, Nuages gris is very contemporary, opening to a new century of music and the extremely classical and infrabasic language was dropped for no reason in the middle of it, completely disconnected, dead, and way too basic, unfelt, uninteresting. Dance is not a succession of positions. This is a crime.

Why is the ending so slow? It is marked "The terror rises up and mingles with the delirious dance." Where is the mad dance? Where is the vertigo? This interpretation makes no sense.

Appreciate this pieces in the Scriabin late style! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o-Bln7Z929u5g5c.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKt_hrOrns2maac.html This year, January 6 marked the 150th anniversary of the Birth of Alexander Nikolaevich Scriabin. He is the person closest to me and beloved by me in the whole world of art, a composer who immerses with his magical music into the worlds of "the highest refinement and the highest grandeur." Having deeply passed through all his work, I learned to thoroughly reproduce the elements of the Scriabin style. In particular, the style of the works of his late creative period, sounding extraordinary, otherworldly, mystical... Using specific means, first of all harmony (as well as texture and tempo), I can "scriabe" any piece, melody or motive accordingly, without changing at all or almost without changing the notes of the melodic line of the original. And despite the fact that in this case I didn't even change a single note of the melody of the original holiday song "Happy birthday to you" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKt_hrOrns2maac.html , in the end it sounds completely different: now it's not a "home holiday", but the image of a nervous-impetuous strong-willed flame characteristic of Scriabin! Also I "enchanted" the famous Christmas song "Jingle bells" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o-Bln7Z929u5g5c.html into a figurative sphere characteristic of Scriabin: now it is the most refined cosmic longing, gradually ecstatically excited, and then melting away...

Nice, original conception. So much better than the soulless boring ones! BTW, it seems you are among those pianists (all of them as far as I can tell) who give a resounding "NO WAY!" to the metronome indication of half note = 120 for the STRETTA at m.468 :)

Great Work Bill, but I doubt Raieff would have worked on it with you. I asked Lateiner, about his recording of the Schoenberg Concerto one day in front of the School Library......." Mr. Lateiner turned Pale, gave a wry smile......and said NEVER ASK ME ABOUT THAT PIECE !!! " I have your wonderful Liszt recordings, Bill........Horowitz would have really liked your playing, Bill. I'm sure that you know I used to take afternoon walks in the park with him. I should write a book about his incredibly surprising comments he made on Pianists of the Past as well as Composers. I'm sure That Liz Stephenson told you about the time i brought some Juilliard friends over to Horowitz's Townhouse and crashed his Birthday Party. I waved to him through a Large window and beckoned him to COME OUTSIDE ( it was a COLD October 1st Evening, with MANY Limousines parked outside)..... I told him ......PLEASE !!!!....meet his Juilliard PIANO STUDENTS, THAT IDOLIZED HIM.....much to everyone's surprise he came outside and CHATTED WITH US !!!!!!........THEN HE SAID WATCH THIS: I KID YOU NOT,, BILL.....HE STARTED TO DO SEVERAL JUMPING JACK EXERCISES IN FRONT OF US !!!!.....Verify it with Liz Stephenson. He was Such a mercurial personality...just like his playing .Horowitz, much to my surprise, kept our 20 Year Correspondence...I wrote endlessly through the years to him and have saved all of his replies ....He put all my letters into " The Vladimir Horowitz Yale University Archives " !!!!.....I learned this after his passing from his Secretary Beatrice Stein......The Greatest 3 Moments of my " Career " were the 3 Separate times that I played some Etudes for him at his home on 94th Street, on that Amazing Steinway D in his gorgeous living room. He especially liked my Scriabin d# minor Etude ....He asked me what Competitions I would be entering, and I told him none ! He was quite surprised, but I told him, can't stand stress like that. He broke out in tremendous laughter on his Couch, and said " Then Why did You Pick This Crazy Business ?......I started laughing and we both couldn't stop laughing.....I guess I'm still laughing. He then said seriously, that he hated the concept of Competitions but they are a necessary evil. He really was a Character as well as a Genius. I really should write a Book. .....Keep those fingers flying Bill...I especially liked your Gnomenreigen....it was as Good as Rachmaninoffs playing !!!!!!!! Best, Alan
