Went in wanting to LOVE it but it was fine until the ending. I agree with the characters as well, they didn't feel lived in and Maxine felt like she numbed herself to the chaos around her ( survived a massacre, friends dying, multiple attempts of assault or sexual assault, existential dread, drugs, money). Maybe that's what they were aiming for but she seemed so SO cold to even her friends here, possibly as a defense mechanism to not get too attached. Anyways great analysis, very good eye.

I really enjoyed it! The only nic cageism that I laughed at was some of his high pitched yelling/screaming. It totally reminded me of his movie “the unbearable weight of massive talent” where his younger self yells out loud “because you’re Nick fuuuuuuuccckkkkkiiiiiiiinnnnnnnn cage!”

I enjoyed Night swim but it wasn’t anything crazy. I still need to watch Imaginary.🍿 They literally put the twist of the movie in the Speak No Evil trailer!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Would liked to have seen more detective work, not just oh, shes psychic. Or maybe delve into her abilities a little more? Idk but overall I really liked it. Seen it twice, loved Maika.

yes! they felt like over the top cartoons. I kept cringing. They kept TELLING us and not SHOWING us or being way too literal. X and Pearl had a mystique to them. I should take a shot every time she does coke XDDD so overdone

In an interview a few years ago, Robert Englund remarked that Kevin Bacon would be good in the role, and word quickly got back to Bacon, who responded that he'd be interested if it was offered. As far as I know, it never went any further. I like Bacon, but I absolutely think Goggins would be a better choice.

Loved it, first two thirds were better than last third but all in all fantastic movie, Mia Goth nailed the cool 80’s blonde perfectly, loved it so much I went twice 😂

Just saw a midnight screening of In A Violent Nature last night with my brother & we both loved it. It's a lot of fun, gory, genuinely disturbing (especially the moment involving the horrific death of the Park Ranger), & at times even darkly comic.

Unfortunately I mostly felt the same about the film. I like Kevin Bacon and some of the other supporting cast. I very briefly nodded off when the killer was revealed. I never heard of the previous movies until I caught the early part of X on cable one late night and was hooked instantly. Part of me also feels the same about giving Maxxxine another watch, but I'll wait until it comes out on streaming.

Mia Goth admits that she didn't listen to anything remotely 1985. Rather she listened to Blondie (big from 1978-1981) and hip hop (90s). She didn't do any homework or media/lifestyle/fashion research for 1985. She said she didn't want to listen to things that didn't fire her up. Well, if you're doing a character from a specific year don't you think it would help if you really dove into every aspect of that year to see what was in and what was out? What was on TV that year? What were the Top 40 hits like in that year? What were young adults realistically wearing that year (look at a high school yearbook). Lazy research.

i'm not even going to bother with this one.... never liked ti west's work but gave x and pearl a shot because of all the hype and the positive reviews and just came out of both of them annoyed as hell... both are so damn meandering and seem to be made purely to show off mia goth's "acting" (mainly her ass and tits).. and on top of everything, my god, does her fake southern accent start to become grating really damn quickly

the worst part to me felt like there was no stakes...aside from not being famous? it never really felt like maxine was in real danger, any tension kind of deflated when I realized the killer was the dad. the side characters were just cannon fodder with no personality. i said the exact same thing about not feeling anything when these characters died. i just don't really know what this movie was trying to say/expand on the story of pearl and x

If you didn't grow up in the 1980s, you're just not going to get it.

*SPOILERS* I honestly thought the ending was going to be... After Maxine blows her dad's head off, the police helicopters over-head telling her to drop her weapon or something, I thought she was going to be arrested for murder and THAT was going to be her moment of fame... as infamous as a murderer! That would have been a MUCH better ending!

Well I guess Ti West is a hack. X was boring, but pearl imo was his magnum opus. I guess maxxxine will disappoint as I predicted. So disappointing.

As an early 80’s slasher enthusiast I loved this movie. I too liked the leisure nature shots. Also loved the locales, Northern Ontario is a great backdrop. Did anyone else love the end credit song. Loved the folksy vibe to the song. Reminded me of the My Bloody Valentine 81 credits song

This movie can’t be compared to the other films. Sorry but you are over looking a lot of elements here. This is a throw back with 80s style characters. X was slow pace to give a one shot scene for character development. Maxxxine was a quicker pace mystery slasher.

I liked the movie, I liked Mia Goth's performance but the ending fell flat. Just felt like things were getting ready to reach a zenith but it just never really got going. In terms of tension, the movie started at a 7 which was good but continued to idle at 7, occasionally reached an 8 and just waiting and waiting to escalate and hit 8,9,10 but mostly just stayed at 7. Never felt as though the menace that was supposed to be creating tension throughout the movie was really menacing. A lot of interesting ideas woven into the movie but were never more than ideas, it seemed as though there were too many ideas and couldn't settle on a theme. Still liked it but considering how good X and Pearl were this was letdown.

I have to agree. It was certainly well-made, but not GOOD - nowhere near the last 2 films, and I even thought X was overhyped fwiw (though I think it is a good movie). MaXXXine just felt somewhat forgettable and throwaway in comparison, especially for the final chapter in a(n albeit loose) trilogy. Still don't think it's a bad movie, just a step down from what came before.

I think the major structural problem with the film is that the audience needs to feel that the Final Girl is vulnerable and legitimately in danger, but with the early scene where she disarms the assailant dressed up like Buster Keaton, she establishes herself as scarier and more intimidating than most any other character in the film, except for Giancarlo Esposito as Teddy Knight, Esquire, who's on Maxine's side.

Maxxxine was BAD . Very dissapointing follow up to X . X subverted SO MANY horror tropes but this was ... so predictable . And boring and dragged out

I (unfortunately) completely agree with everything you said here... and I'm a HUGE fan of X and Pearl. Biggest disappointment of the year for me so far.
