That NC voltage meter can save your life. Had a fellow appliance tech go to check a washer and dryer and the dryer was shorted and had voltage going through the entire dryer. He didn’t know that, he went to look behind the appliances, put one hand on the dryer and one on washer and made himself a path of least resistance. He died at the customers house unfortunately. So before I touch an appliance, I use that volt sniffer to see if an appliance is shorted by any chance.

Do you think appliance repair is dying? I've heard machines are being made more computerized and turning appliances into a throw away and buy new mentality or if there are techs they are more like computer programmers.
@theapplianceprofitАй бұрын
Appliance repair is certainly not dying! I have 3 techs that have full schedules everyday! Yes there are control boards in appliances now and they are very sophisticated, but they have gotten even more expensive to the point that people will opt to have them repaired over replaced.

So I’m confused on your cost when people do go with the repair, wouldn’t it be 100 service charge + the 230 dollar repair, or do you not charge a service charge when you do a repair ?

Great Videos! Where did you learn sealed systems repair and where did you get your certification? What is the process and where did you take the test? How long did it take for you to learn it? Thanks for any information.
@theapplianceprofitАй бұрын
I honestly learned sealed system (and appliance repair in general) just by getting out there and doing it. I sucked at first but I'm a pretty quick learner and I was determined to get good at it. But I got my certification a long time ago and I can't even remember what the company name was. But I am almost certain that you can do the certification test online now and it is easy!

i just had 2 refrigerators fail in 2 weeks, got the boards out to do basic component checking and i cant read anything on any of the boards, it looks like they put some layer of liquid or some wax film over everything so my meter prongs wont touch the component legs to read anything,. What do you do in that situation when there is a coating over all the compenents and the back side where the solder joints are ?
@theapplianceprofitАй бұрын
Yeah you are right, they do sometimes put a gel coat on them. You would need to make your tests at the connectors. Back probe wiring or disconnect the connector.
@HereOnYouTubeCommentingАй бұрын
@@theapplianceprofit well to check components i need to get to the component legs but i cant because they have that thick gel coat over everything. If i don't have voltages at the harness outputs, something is wrong within the components that i need to check but i cant ... Not without using some kind of knife or something to scrape that coating off but thats a lot of work to trouble shoot down to the component level when you got that gook all over it ...
@theapplianceprofitАй бұрын
Oh I see, you are wanting to test board level components. Yeah, most appliance repair companies don't perform board level repairs, we just replace the entire board when we determine the board is at fault.
@HereOnYouTubeCommentingАй бұрын
@@theapplianceprofit Well i had to trouble shoot 2 of them 3 weeks ago and one board was clearly bad, as i opened the panel i could smell burnt components, 5 poped caps, 2 burnt resistors and one burnt voltage rectifier. That was an obvious board failure. The other was appeared to be fine, no obvious bad components, but when you power it up, you could hear a relay clicking on and off and an led light blinking to the relay click on and off, the inside fridge light was also blinking to the relay, so was the thermostat control panel ... After un-plugging 3 times to try and reset, nothing, still kept doing the same thing so i un-plugged all the harness' and powered back up and same clicking issue so i said its done, needs a new board.

My biggest struggle with LG and Samsung is there tech sheet are horrid and parts diagrams are also horrid. Any advice would be great. The good thing with there products is that they have the same failures all the time. There usually is not a whammy like Whirlpool crap products. I am also the only one in the area that works on those products but I am going in blind. I worked with just Whirlpool for ten years and now doing my own business and samsung/lg are very big in my area of work.
@theapplianceprofit2 ай бұрын
Yeah their tech sheets and parts breakdowns are not great. But they are honestly fairly easy to work on. Once you get a good understanding of the system, you can test most things from the board and it will tell the story for you. Then you will be killing it!

Is the course more on how to run the business than on troubleshooting repairs? Is the course ideal for a total beginner that is considering a carrer change? With knowledge in hvac & electrical but have just been doing diy washer/dryer repairs
@theapplianceprofit4 ай бұрын
The course is mainly geared toward running the business and getting customers so that you can start from nothing and scale to a full time, successful business. But I have added a full module dedicated to sealed system repairs since there was so much demand, so that is in the course. And with enough demand, I will add more technical trainings on more of the appliances. Keep in mind tho, I give you my best resources for getting real hands-on training at your own pace.
