I have some of Barkov's grail cards up for sale and I've hardly had any offers before or after their Cup win. Florida's market is terrible, same goes for Tampa Bay too. MacKinnon gets lost in McDavids shadow and the fact the NHL has done a brutal job marketing him. He also get's lost in Makar's shadow too (since Makar is pacing to be anywhere from 1 to 3 all time best defensemen). MacKinnon is just at the wrong place in time unfortunately for him. I think if MacKinnon played for the Rangers/Leafs/Habs his hobby love would be vastly different. I like the Exquisite cards too because they harken back to 2003 same goes for the retro 96 PMG's. I see no difference in grading a patch card vs non patch card, makes little sense to me. Every card looks better raw than graded.

Hey Troy, thrift stores in my city are loaded with hockey books dirt cheap, Im sure every city has them in the book area.

Florida has 2 basketball teams 2 NFL Teams 2 baseball teams and 2 hockey teams, thats alot of options for your sports card dollar. Colorado also has 3 sports teams bigger than hockey

The #1 thing that moves the hobby needle is performance, stats & individual awards. MacKinnons market is doing nothing right now only because it was obvious for months that he would be the MVP, in the past 6 months his stuff is up around 30%. It's not going to magically shoot up 25% the night of the awards.

Personally I think that the hockey card hobby can’t compared to NBA, NFL or MLB. We are just fraction of collectors to those groups and most of us are extremely knowledgeable about their hobby. We only have a handful of legends and only five important vintage rookie cards (Vezina, Howe, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux). That’s why you rarely see any hype and only slow movement in prices, and that’s why only a few cards become insanely valuable. Bedard and McDavid prices are a deviation to that, mainly because I think lots of non-hockey card collectors heard about those two and started buying his cards.

re: player cards not increasing with a cup win in the last 2 years ... why would VGK fans invest in Eichel rookie cards in a Buffalo uni ... same for FLA Bob, Tkachuk, Bennet, Reinhart ... all in other unis ... yes Barkov is underrated but should there be a rush for Ekblad cards ... cup wins rarely are going to create new player collectors and most collectors want cards of players in their team's uni .... just one example of why the needle doesn't move not the only

Great episode like usual boys! My only counter is grading cards. I was always in the boat with Phil and Troy….grading is overrated, real collectors don’t care about grading etc (until recently). Unfortunately my family isn’t into cards like I am, my kids want nothing to do with it (which is ok). Grading allows these cards one day to be sold a lot easier by them. They’re not going to sit there and try and figure out the value of raw vs graded. Collecting grading helps it being sold down the road.

Do you know who Connor Bedard outscored in rookie years? Connor McDavid..... Points in your rookie year is not a good stat to rank. That being said, I do think the Bedards are overvalued but more because of the number of cards/parallels/sets and (probably) because of the high print runs.

I have a 2016/17 McDavid Artifacts patch auto, mint, I take it out of the 1 touch and it is gorgeous. It’s a ruby green number to eight. You can not see the beauty in that card when you have it in one touch. It looks like every other card in a one touch. When I take it out and let the light gleam off it. Wow, now I know why I paid a thousand bucks for it. In short, I agree 100% I have Auston Mathews, Futurewatch Futurewatch patch McDavid cup rookie Matthews cop Rookie, Gretzky rookie, none of them graded. I am a collector I bought the card not the grade.

The Oilers did not touch the Western Conference Trophy, they treated it like it had leprosy. The Hockey Hall of Fame is the best Hall of Fame of all the pro sports. It is a must go to if you are in Toronto. Dedicate an entire day there, it is worth it. I'm a huge fan of the Clear Cut Series. Beautiful cards with hard signed autos, what's not to like? Like you Josh I love the red and blue canvas autos, especially the rookies. I also love the rookie debut auto /10. I was fortunate enough to get the Cale Makar Rookie red ink jersey number 8/8, UD nailed it with the picture of Makar in the alt uniform. Sadly he doesn't have a rookie auto debut auto /10, not sure why Upper Deck didn't make one for him. Regarding Clear Cut being a risky product it's no more risky then buying Ultimate, Premier even worse Black Diamond and only getting only 1 auto (sticker auto with Black Diamond) along with 3 or 4 other worthless cards at double to triple the cost. You can get could get roughly 3 boxes of Clear Cut for the same cost and get 3 hard signed autos. So if the Clear Cut boxes are duds at least you have 3 hard signed autos vs 1. A Mcdavid Emerald Surge Auto was listed on ebay forever for $25k and it finally sold last week (allegedly). I can't see at the moment what it actually sold for and not showing up on 130point so maybe it was just taken down. Im thinking the McDavid non auto Emerald Surge goes for 10k at most.

In the last episode stickers autos were discussed. I completely agree, sticker autos are trash. The player either signed the card OR the sticker but he didn't do both. Also, for less than $200 you can have the Center Ice package and see almost every NHL game and could see McDavid play all the time.

I opened a case of Extended and really enjoyed it. I got 2 exclusives, 3 deluxe and 4 clearcut so it seems to me that the print run must be down from S1/2. I like most of the inserts and didn't get many dupes. I got 5 numbered inserts but no particularly exciting players. My best hit was an Outburst Fantilli YG. I agree the price is high but the fun was high too, so I'm not upset. Oh, and I got about 7 different Bedards (but nothing SUPER rare other than maybe the Black Diamond.) I definitely prefer this over S1/2.

Ebay's authenticity program is absolutely terrible. If your card goes through the ebay authenticity program and the seller doesn't except returns you are stuck with the card no matter what, you cannot return it even if there are problems with the card that was not disclosed. This is going to hurt ebay sales overall because who wants to spend at a minimum of $250(cad or usd) and not have the ability to return the card? It only takes once to get burned and you will think more than twice before spending $250+ on a card. Sure if it's graded there is a little less uncertainty (not if your name is Phil lol) but buying raw is a real risk going through this program. I was almost burned once but ebay was able to give me a partial refund after much discussion. Yes slabsharks cards go through ebay's authenticity if it's over $250(cad). People love to send their dinged up cards to consignors because they think they have a buffer from people returning the cards back or asking for a partial refund. The sale authenticity rules applies to everyone no matter what. Ebay needs to ditch this program asap.

Alot of YG's and rookie cards are likely to get sun damage with the new wall matt that is being promoted. I first saw them on Mirage Trading..its a big picture of an NHL star, with a spot to put a card. Then can be hung on your wall.

Great show fellas as usual! I do enjoy the dynamic PHIL brings. One thing I really like is that he is living in Canada and can give the scoop on sports cards, fans, all the buzz from there on hockey and the hobby.

I was reading the comments and saw that someone wasn't a Phil fan. I like him on the show, he brings an extra energy along with additional hobby knowledge. I think he should be a full time member.
