Our mali is so reactive now we 've essentially stopped going out on walks due to fear of constant reactivity. We need to learn to start from the basics now I fear.

Start out at a big open park, just working on getting in and out of the car. Give that mal a fun game getting in and out of the car and give yourself a ton of room to work.

For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕

dutchies are even more sensitive than the Mal.. very difficult dogs to own.. and they do not have fur.. i say they have antennas.. maybe ditch the prong and see .. helps a lot! The dog does not work FOR you - dutchies you always work WITH..

We would always stop before we got to the hunt and let the dogs run and get it out of their system. Work well

I would advice to follow trough with commands even after the dog comes out the car and dont reward him untill he is calm and focused on you
@powerpetdogtraining

Absolutely right! We always train our dogs and clients to work at the first transition. Every dog and client first works on “in and outs”, where we go in and out of the car several times only getting a reward and freedom once they can engage. We advise to work at the car or door first for the first 5 minutes or until your dog is focused and engaged.

Do you suggest training g one dog at a time or two siblings at once because they don't like being separated. My new foster dogs :)
@powerpetdogtraining
@powerpetdogtraining 10 ай бұрын
Almost all across the board, it’s most successful and important to give one dog your full attention at a time. It is absolutely necessary if you leave the safety of your home or teaching something new. However, if the separation anxiety is so severe that it’s going to cause problems with for example neighbors. Start to building separation with the dogs together. You can do this by having one crated for just a brief moment at a time, eventually working up to one being crated for the entire time while you work with the other. Similarly you can start by teaching them the “place” command, then teach them separate targets, then expanding the distance and duration on separate targets. Then having one stay one target while you work the other. But start working on separating them

One problem many people don't realise about Dutch Shepherds is that they are in fact an old breed with 200-300 years of history behind them. And what they were primarily bred for way back when was protecting and controlling large flocks of sheep etc, ON THEIR OWN. And I mean just that. On many Dutch farms, these dogs would control their flocks without any human supervision all day, bring the flock in for the night, again on their own, stay with the animals during the night, and then, in the morning take them out to the grazing grounds again. All this, again, without human input. This has led to an extremely intelligent, independently thinking breed that doesn't take too kindly to people trying to restrict them in some way. If you don't know how to keep a Dutch Shepherd engaged, he is going to become frustrated and will try to turn the tables on you. Meaning he will want to be boss!

Largely meaningless what the dog did 200+ years ago. 200+ years ago half the purebred dogs breeds now would be unrecognizable both physically and behaviorally. In the last 100 years they have been refined for police/military work.

I really wish people would do there research b4 buying those sort of dogs. They have the puppy until about six months to a year then suddenly realize that these dogs need lots of exercise and attention then they rehome the dog as there lifes don't have the time to spend with these high intensity breeds.

I actually have a Malinois x Dutch Shepherd mix (12.5 months) and the last time we went to a vet it was a disaster. I actually had to restrain her and she was biting/nipping on my hand when the vet wanted to inspect her ears; later on the same issue with her yearly vaccination. One of the issues, and I'm not making excuses because I need to work on this behaviour nonetheless, was that the vet himself clearly wasn't used to dealing with these dogs. The vets I've had before were first introducing themselves to her and making sure she was trusting them. So I hope that one vet didn't ruin her for future visits. Either way, I need to fix it.

Great video! The breakdown Is fantastic, it really shows the importance of doing multiple reps again and again to desensitise anxious/reactive dogs. He might never love taking a bath, but that's OK! At least it's doable, safe, and not a crazy journey each time his owners will need to bath him 😂

Would really love to see some more in depth videos from you on dealing with bold, high intensity dogs! I just came across your channel today and have since watched a few of your videos. I have to say, I found them incredibly helpful. I really liked your EMS and doorway methods. They're very similar to the techniques that you see most trainers using, but the way that you lay it out and explain it, the small things that you do differently, all really resonated with me. I think you just might have given me that last piece of the puzzle that I've been missing in my own training, so thank you! I'm really looking forward to seeing more from you in the future.

Most of their shots don't require a prescription and can be given by the owner in their neck scruff with an extra set of extra hands for distracting them with treats.

Definitely a safe and useful thing to train. This method worked for my rescue and while he’s come a long way in 2 years, this is SO useful for vet visits or taking him in crowded areas where I’m not sure how he’ll react. We call it his “party cone”🎉
