When I bought Moxie, she was at Sailor’s Wharf in St. Pete. That was 8 years ago. There are a few boatyards there that can haul out and dismast your boat. The trucking company I found on UShip.com, typed in my specs, and got a few quotes.

Butch Hagan transported my boat. Again, that was quite some time ago. You can google that company or request bids from UShip. Hope that helps.

Plastics are the wave of the future! Haha! This strainer has actually worked perfectly for me for years with no issues.

Oh, I highly doubt it. I don’t know what the CFRs are on that. Moxie is a private vessel and not a commercial vessel. If she were a commercial vessel, I’m sure I’d have to upgrade or at least find the regulation to see if the strainer satisfies the requirements.

Hey! I'm currently working as a charter captain on a 41-ft sailboat in the Florida Keys for the summer. Before that I was in shipyard in Seattle for 4 months. Staying in Florida for the time being.

@@SailingMoxie He doesnt have insurance and he doesn't have an income. He seams like a good guy but something weird is happening. I dont know anybody here where I am, so was strange when another guy tried to friend me on facebook. I had a look at his profile and his photos look dodgy as can be and there's talk of him having been to prison. So I googled his name and somebody by that name went to prison for 18months for jabbing a woman in the neck with a drug hypodermic syringe because she was pregnant with his child and wouldn't give up the pregnancy. I haven't had time to find out if they are the same person, and they probably aren't. But it has my hackles up

Do you mean a 155 outboard? Most marine engines, either gas or diesel, have some sort of raw water strainer to make sure the water cooling system doesn't get blocked with debris. The strainer could be external to the engine like mine on Moxie and most marine diesel engines, or it could be internal for an outboard engine.

Yeah, sorry about that! I got my license and started working on boats, not realizing how much demand there was. It's hard to find time to make videos while traveling all the time. I hope to have more out soon.

Thank you for watching! My suggestion: make friends with sailors and get them to take you out on their boats. Good sailors love to take new, interested people out for a sail. Also, local sailing schools often have open sail days where you can join a boat or you can go out for just a few bucks. Don't jump into boat/sailboat ownership if you can avoid it. The more time you spend on the water with experienced sailors, the more you'll learn from their experiences. -Matt

Welcome to Florida! And congrats on your license. I've actually been working on a boat on the river out of Portland. Just moved anothet boat from Seattle to Hawaii. I'll be back in Florida in another week or so. Is your Hunter 54 in Clearwater Beach?

It was an expensive lesson, for sure.

I really liked my trimaran in Hawaii. It would have been a great boat in Florida. But the Hunter 54 is a pretty cool boat as well. My biggest issue with the monohull is that it has a 6 foot draft, and Florida has a lot of shallow water. I have softly run aground several times on Moxie. The tri only drew about 2.5 feet. I hope one day to own a large tri again, but for now I'm happy with Moxie and the monohull life. Thanks for the question!

PVC is easy to work with and resists corrosion, but it's not tremendously strong. Good for lots of projects though. That composite wood decking is also pretty good. StarBoard marine board plastic is pretty good, but expensive and not very lightweight.

Hello Eric. Thank you for watching, and thank you for following! The Hunter 54 is a good coastal cruising sailboat. I wouldn't cross and ocean with it. But it is great for me to live on when I am there and for cruising in the warm, calmer waters of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. I hope to put out more videos soon! Yep, you can self-certify your 360 days of sea service on your own boat. You can do this with form CG-719S, the small vessel sea service form, and also show proof of owning your own boat (registration, etc.)

Allyn, great to hear of your upcoming Bahamas trip. Yeah, 6 people will be tight, but I think doable. For the 6-pack you need 360 days of sea time since your 16th birthday, and if you own your own boat, you can self-certify for your time on that boat. Hope you meet your sea time requirements soon. Thanks! I'm working on it. I'll post videos with more info soon, but I was away from Moxie for the last six months working on other boats in Alaska and the Caribbean. Back on board now and getting things moving.

It all depends on how much draw your pumps have and what safety measures you have in place in case the strainers fail. I found this online: "The ideal location for the strainer is slightly above the waterline but on a continuous upward rise toward the engine. That way, water will not pour into the bilges in the case of failure and air will not have a place to become trapped." (Moyer Marine Forum). On a large sailboat I'm working on now, all the strainers are well below the waterline, but we have solid thru-hull valves in place to restrict water flow. I think you want them close to the waterline, perhaps slightly above (in case of failure), and so that you can open and inspect them without having to close seacocks. However, you then have to worry about flooding them to get the air out or at least pushing or pumping the air through the system so that you get rid of it quickly and don't keep air trapped in the flow systems. Hope this helps.

Is this the one currently for sale in Ohio? As a first sailboat buy it can be great. Spend some time with the boat. Get a full survey done. Negotiate the price for sure. Make sure to consider moving expenses, storage expenses, refit list and expenses. A H54 is a LOT of boat to handle. You will always need at least one other person on board to take her out. Take your time and make an informed decision. Talk to other boat owners. Otherwise, I love Moxie my H54. I live on board, so I spend lots of time with it. Haha! Yep, that's exactly what I did. We were able to save a few parts from the old engine. But it is essentially a replacement engine. Enjoy some Moxie for me!

I saw the listing on YachtWorld.com. It was being sold by a broker for the insurance company. I was directed to their website to place a bid, but I called the broker and asked if I could offer the asking price and have a day or two to have a survey completed. The damage to the boat was mostly interior damage, and it was a total loss due to the estimated repair costs. So the previous owners received a check, and the insurance company had the broker sell the boat to get what they could back. Since it had been a total loss, I cannot get insurance on the boat until I have a full survey completed after repairs. I don't remember the broker or the company because I dealt with them over the phone. I hope that helps, but if you have another question, let me know.

For the height of the strainer above the waterline, I opened the thru-hull valve and held the hose up. I lowered the end of the hose until water started to come out. Then I knew I was at the waterline. I wanted the strainer above the waterline, but just barely, so as not to require too much force to get water in. Other people have recommended placing the strainer below the waterline. I wanted it just above the waterline in case the gasket or cap failed, because I did not want the boat to flood while I was away from the boat. The strainer is a bit smaller than I'd like. I will upgrade soon to the larger size for better flow rate at higher RPMs. For now, I don't run the engine too high or very long, so the smaller strainer works just fine. But I will upgrade to the larger one soon. Thanks for the questions.

@@SailingMoxie Oh cool, you got a license. 6 Pack?? 100 ton?? You could charter Moxie with some work I suppose. Though I have a feeling you are a man of many talents so doing that probably isn't a big deal for generating income.

I did my six pack near coastal and upgraded to a 25 ton master inland. I also did sailing and towing endorsements, as well as STCW basic training. I mostly did it all for fun but will have the ability to crew here and there on yachts, which I already do for friends unpaid. I don't plan on chartering Moxie. But it's good to get all that education to increase safety on board. Lots of updates coming soon on Moxie and on my personal plans. Office job life will be coming to an end here shortly.

It was a private guy with a trailer. I went on UShip.com and posted my info, and I received a few bids right away. Post the info with dimensions of the boat, etc. My guy told me I was the maximum length and width he could haul with his low boy trailer. 60 ft is a big boat, and probably much wider than mine. I paid $1,600 or $1,800 I think. Yours would be more than that, as my boat is smaller and it was also a shorter trip. Plus I had to pay on both ends to have the boat lifted on and off.
