Hi Patrick, big fan of your music with Madonna. Just wanted to let you know how much your Soundpage in July '88 issue of Keyboard Magazine inspired/motivated me to learn to play keyboards as a 12 year old! I still listen to a MP3 recording of Farewell Fancy Pastin' to this day. :)

Sounds more like something off the True Blue album rather than Like a Prayer's.

Undoubtedly one if the greatest pop songs ever written, it would be good to see all the chords written out. They have helped my understanding of the song.

It always makes me surprised when I think how fresh her voice was BEFORE taking singing lessons for Evita in 1996; maybe she could not control her voice as much as she can do now, but certainly she looked more genuine!

I wonder how she achieved this sound. Her vocal performance in Like A Prayer is so different from everything she's done before or since. A raw state of emotion.

What youre saying is that this is an original demo version? Not a redone version by some engineering of whatever kind? Sounds so clear and crisp.

It's a pity that Madonna has forgotten and forsaken the brilliant people that have made her work what it used to be. Lots of love to you Mr. Patrick Leonard.

I produced and engineered recordings for 25 years and in all that time and among all those artists, I witnessed skills like Madonna’s quite infrequently, perhaps 4 or 5 times. She was an extraordinary talent as both a vocalist and lyricist. However, the material of the last decade or two just doesn’t have the same finesse or musicality.

As much as I love this song along with all of Madonna’s work with Pat (he’s just a genius), I’m amazed by the fact that she has never managed to perform the song live as in the original track from a vocal perspective. Her voice sounds just perfect here.

Patrick Leonard, whether collaborator or sole songwriter, was responsible for all of Madonna's best music. That said, this song, while being insanely familiar (I call it godhead. Like when you recognize a song from our home or our collective consciousness the first time you hear it) ...as I was saying This song is TOXIC AF!!! "you are my destiny"? I always say, if you really want your mind back, stay away from love songs. They're propaganda lol It's okay to love someone. It's ok to enjoy it. But American love songs always take it to this psychotic place. Soul mates, destiny, God ordained, meant to be. It's as destructive to humanity as religion. Plus music aimed at women is codependent af. The approved lyric content for chick music is amputated. It's paralysis. You are nothing but a need to worship a man. I call it toxic cheerleader syndrome. Or terminal cheerleader syndrome. The lyrics of this song are what? Cheerleading her man. Or woman in her case, but still it's putting love on a pedestal and cheerleading your boo like you aren't while without them. They say men are from Mars and women are from Venus. No. Men are are from Hey, I'm a person and women are from Loving a man IS my identity. The man I love is my identity. I am incomplete if I am not loving a man. It's so ill. I saw BelindaCarlisle this week. I hadn't listened in a long time and I sat there horrified at the lyrical content. Every song was a love song and every song had some kind of divine edge. Cuz u know, loving a.... MAN!™ is the greatest fulfillment we'll ever know. And while I'm not a butter person, when I think of the decades of torture I endured because I'd been indoctrinated ...no more than indoctrinated. Hypnotized, programmed to think this way... It caused so much gutwrenching devastation. And it's so hard to outgrow because giving up on the sacred dream means giving up. It's a fate worse than death. It's this programmed toxic pattern that has its own firewall to protect itself. We can never let it go because that's the greatest horror of all. Eventually, you grow tired of beating your head against the wall and accept that love was invented by tyrants to make peasants breed. I mean people love eachother, but this twisted movie love thing Americans are brainwashed to exalt.... That doesn't exist. BUT No faulting Patrick or Madonna. I've written hundreds of love songs. Perhaps even more. I don't anymore. I decided to not write any music until I could say something True. The song that broke that boundary was "Your Husband Is a Bottom". Campy, but True. (I'm still reeling from the realization that all men have prostates. So yeah, I'm seeking a cancer survivor lol I'm kidding. I ain't seeking shit. Just a bottom joke. I'll find a man that isn't a bottom even if I have to resort to the cancer ward! Lol Funny I'm here right now. AHS NYC has me thinking about Madonna and the gay New York artists. Before I go For years I've been tweeting Madonna, telling her that she needs to stop trying to sell to kids. She should make an album of new music in the style of Patrick and Madonna's heyday. Verse chorus verse chorus bridge intermission verse bridge chorus. Do songs like she had before instead of doing the now sound. The people who bought millions of her albums are still here. I think she alienated too many of us by becoming too dance/electronica oriented. I can do a little of that, but not every album over and over. To be honest, she never made another album like Like A Prayer. That album is a revelation! Sure, it's a pop album, but it's sheer genius. Plus the quality of songs. GimmeAllYourLove is no ExpressYourself ya know? Plus OhFather, PromiseToTry, and SpanishEyes... Even SomethingToRemember... Those are musically sound ballads. I'll never forget the first time I heard TakeABow. I was MORTIFIED. And it became a hit??!!!? OhFather and SpanishEyes are musically respectable. TakeABow is formulaic DRIVEL!!!! Anyway... You should call her and tell her that an album of new music meant to appeal to her older fans WILL sell better than just doing today's pop. You can throw a few tracks on for the dance clubs but I'm telling you We miss when Madonna had SONGS. Beautiful melodies, creative chord arrangements... When a song is a gem, you can give it a beat and it's everyone's favorite at the club. Writing tracks around a beat is just bleh. Anyways, I hope I brought you a few chuckles. I'm not like bitter or anything over you programming me to waste decades as a pathetic simp lol Love to you! Happy Sunday!

If the key was transposed down 1 semitone it would have suited M's range better. The "angels" part in the chorus hook sounds a little flat to me.

People keep saying she cannot sing. I think the issue is that she cannot sing as others and others cannot sing as she does. Just saying, been keeping a watchful eye on people who can sing her songs. Some legimate attempts, no person who can sing her songs better.

I gotta be honest. I thin, Stephen Bray lost his touch to create a classic Madonna track now. I could be wrong though. Butt he recent Breakfast Club music isn't anything to write home about. I almost feel the same about Nile Rodgers. his hey day as a producer was int eh early to mid-eighties. His work wirth Daft punk was eh. Patrick Leonard she should definitely bring back. I also think someone she should reconnect with musically should be Marius DeVries. Orbit gets too much credit for Ray of Light. I think it's DeVries who made that album sonically great. Because it's missing on Music & MDNA. Don't get me wrong, Orbit was good but he had solid songs to work with written by M & Patrick Leonard. Finally should should reconnect musically with Stuart price on new music. I know he worked on the current tour but her last great album was Confessions. let's face it.
