The question you have to ask yourself is how much is your time worth. Home brewed setups are fine, but they require a lot of your time to properly setup, configure and maintain. Storage pricing is largely dictated by the quality of the drives they source, combined with the engineering that went into their server systems. Just recently however they just released the Strato V. It's a Kaleidescape player capable of internally storing around 10 4K titles at one time, it's priced at $3,995 and is a great way to get into the Kaleidescape ecosystem at a reasonable price.

the storage prices are insane, they are gatekeeping the storage and putting an unreal price on it bc you are tied to the system. I think most HT reviewers are defending them and the pricing of storage bc they are getting free units. There is no storage at any caliber that costs that much... I understand the movie price and the player price, but storage is WILD!!!!!!

With the picture, it is very hard for me to tell the difference between streaming and physical media, but the audio you can 100% tell the difference.

I RIP all my blurays to a Synology NAS .. only the cost of the blurays involved .... I have a nice PC running JRIVER which , among other features, has MADVR built in ...... Long story short I have a substantial bluray / DVD movie server for a fraction of the cost and NONE of the licensing issues .....

I have this receiver but my surround sound speakers do not have any sound. The speakers work just no sound while watching tv. I lao have two bookshelf speakers and a center speaker which work perfectly. An idea why the surround sound speakers have no sound? Thank you

EFF DT! Their speakers are CRAP! My BP9040 sub woofer amp failed after 3 years of real easy operation. 700 bux to replace? I don't think so... And the internet is full of the same BP9040 amp failures.

There are different Dolby Vision profiles. Kaleidescape is using the best Dolby Vision profile, which is not backwards-compatible with HDR-10. Your player needs a Dolby Vision compatible chipset in order to play Dolby Vision content (generating the right signal over HDMI to your display). The older Strato, Strato S and Strato C players don't have Dolby Vision compatible chips. The new Strato V does. The other thing to note is that you can own a Strato V and purchase/enjoy hundreds or thousands of movies. You can only keep ten 4K movies on your Strato V locally, but you can always delete movies to free up space and download other movies from your Kaleidescape account when you want to watch them.

I am tired of HDR, I am switching back to SDR, HDR looks pale and doesn't have the vibrant color on my QLED or OLED T.V. HDR needs to be banned it's a waste of time.

Dune 2 is still in 2.4 aspect ratio on the kaleidescape. Big L for me. If they had the real imax releases for these types of movies instead of the normal bluray releases Id be interested.

Saying HDR sucks because you have a shit TV, or aren't able to configure it properly, is like saying high bitrate 5.1 sound sucks because you only listen to music on bad earbuds. Also, you're watching HDR content in a brightly lit room, with loads of windows reflected on your screen, no wonder you can't see shit.

While I still think 4k is a lot, and 3k would be more of a "sweet spot", where this could pay for itself is if you have decided never to go to a movie theater again, as long as the current model of releasing new films shortly to Digital remains. Let's face it, aside from the cost of tickets, a night out to the movies for 3-4 people is easily $100 if you even think about getting popcorn and a soda. It's insane. By the time you watch 30 movies you are already at 3k if you ventured out to the theater. Use this for new movies only, don't try replacing your library and keep up your media storage devices.

Hi there I have a kalidescape and I totally agree on you the price a far to high it like there out of touch of reality when I bought my trinnov altitude 16 pre pro the dealer was making £10000 on comission so they are it with price and the same for Macintosh where do the get there prices from.

25K to gain entry into a single digital storefront complete with all the drawbacks of not actually your digital purchases is one of the biggest headscratchers in history. I rip my 4K Blu-rays losslessly to a Synology NAS running a Plex Server through a Shield TV Pro and I challenge anyone to be able to spot the difference between that and Kaleidescape's DCP's even on high-end home theater hardware and a 140-inch screen. The bump in quality isn't even going to be noticeable for anyone NOT running an actual full-size theater.

You can delete the DVD from the UI and it will remain as a digital offer. It is a feature from disc based Kscape products.

The 40 dollar price is a WB thing. I typically wait till those are on sale.

4k uhd sdr is good enough. Hdr is good at some content but not all.

At some point I would consider jumping in but as he pointed out in his first video they weren't willing to support an older server. Even if they charged a slightly bloated price to replace a failed hard drive it would be better than having to pay for an all new server. In the podcast he was on with the k-scape rep I swear the rep said on the small single drive servers they do not replace the hard drives out of warranty.

Lower specced than a playstation and almost 10 times the price. The profit margins on this are pure greed. If Amazon and/or Apple start doing uncompressed content this company is done for and all your spent money is gone because you don't own any of the movies you've paid for. This isn't worth more than $400. I'll never understand why they don't just make the pricing reasonable and try to sell more of them. Hopefully at some point Amazon decide to buy them out so it keeps working and doesn't become an expensive paperweight. A zidoo and storage is a tenth of this price. The premium charged here to be able to just download legally is insane.

You can use it alongside your existing players like a Strato S or other servers *But* that disables the 1tb a storage in the Strato V .... and no you still can't browse your full library of films you own but are not downloaded.

I would be okay with that price if the storage prices weren’t ridiculous. Maybe you can justify the player prices if you consider their licensing fees and other fees they need to provide the service, but for storage you’re just over paying for hard drives and are being locked into an ecosystem that they control.

If you could connect kaleidescape to your home movie server then I would pick one up. Would be nice to download a movie quick with little fuss and have the kaleidescape layout. Just dont want to have another movie ecosystem separate from the others

As someone who has been bit by other services where "buying" is not really owning; even if this was $200 I wouldn't buy it. This is just DRM with more $$ and steps. Ideally, Kaleidescape could become a platform selling DRM-free super high quality movies--much like many hi-res audio services where "buying" actually means "owning." I can buy a disc and put it in any player and watch it. I'm not locked into a single company's ecosystem.
