I have to say, this really humanized the Islamic faith, it's view of justice, and Sharia Law. Seems very just.

I only spent 7 months in Afghanistan. Although I met many great people there, the Taliban were not among them. They are by far the most primitive, hateful, misogynistic, selfish, group of "people" on the face of the planet...and I have spent over 20 years in some pretty difficult countries during my career.

As a New Yorker (and reader of) and an avid Martini drinker, I wish this was a better piece. Drunk or not, if you’re exploring or honoring the Martini, you should have spent a few more beats at Bemelman’s. More shtick than substance.

Here are the prices I found online: 1) Chelsea Hotel: no price given 2) Gotham: all cocktails are $21 3) Le Rock: all cocktails are $22 4) Tigre: no prices given (or anything else, not even an address) 5) Sunken Harbor: all martinis are $20 6) Dante: $20 7) Bemelman's Bar: $35-$65 8) Aretsky's Patroon: $19 (I realized I missed one, but Shteyngart's voice was so slurred when he said the name of the bar and, unlike all the other bars, there was no sign shown.)

I've been in the security industry for 29 years, locksmith for 20 of that and on my own for 10 of that. I found this and was wondering how it was gonna be presented. Y'all did well with it. It's not a normal job. It attracts VERY interesting people, for better or worse, and your customers are, welll.... Nobody EVER calls a locksmith because they're having a wonderful, stress free day. You're either another detail that needs to be dealt with at best, or a reminder that's gonna present a bill at worst. Sometimes you see folks having the worst day of their life. Sometimes you literally open the door to that day. It's worth it because it's my job to at least TRY to make their day go a little smoother, to help people be and feel a little safer. Starting out, there were times I was awake and running calls 36-48 hours straight. At 47 I'm already starting to have problems with my knees, hips, back, and shoulders. I broke my hand in two places about a year ago, and early onset arthritis was already starting to set in. I've been mugged twice, and there have been a lot more attempted muggings that I managed to get out of one way or another. Still though, I'll do it for as long as I can, just like every other locksmith I know, because otherwise I'm not even gonna know what to do with myself. I figure I might have another 20 years in me if I'm lucky. That scene with Matt just sittin on the bed looking out the window, and the fact that he's still calling the shop just hammered that it.
