I lost over $70k when everything started to tank. Not because I was in an exchange that went belly up. I was just stupid to hold and because that's what everyone said. I'm still responsible. It just taught me to be a better investor now that I understand more of what could go wrong. It took me over two years of being in the market, I'm really grateful I found one source to recover my money, at least $10k profits weekly. Thanks Natalie Strayer...

On mistake #5: You said you would take an $800,000 Roth over a $1mil Traditional IRA every time. But if you're assuming a 20% federal tax rate and 5% state tax rate, your $1mil Traditional would be equal to $700,000, not $800,000. It order to be fair, you would have to choose between a $1mil Traditional and $700,000 Roth. (Gotta watch those sales people.)

do i pay the taxes from my savings or is it to be deducted from the traditional IRA account? oh, not so good if I have to wait 5 years after converting it. I am 63 so it sounds like I still have to wait. either way, I have to pay. then i rung into the risk of my investment declining after i pay the conversion taxes, not good for me :(

Thank you for answering my question. Another question. You can borrow up to 50 percent on the Solo 401k for purchasing a property and you can fix that property up on your own. If you want to do the work yourself on the property. If you invest with the 401k then you cannot do the work yourself or your business cannot do the work--you have to hire a third party correct?

Great info! So I have a weird situation, just wondering your thoughts on. I have an old LLC I never ended up using, never had an EIN number issued, to the IRS the business is inactive, but to the state I just found out it is still an active business apparently, I'm going to start the process of doing a dissolution, but I think I still need to report to FinCen, however I can't get beyond the first page of the application without an EIN. Do I request an EIN now just to file the BOI? Any tips would be much appreciated, thanks!

If I want the depreciation available to offset W2 income, can I own the building personally and my Roth IRA own the land? Couldn't I get the depreciation benefits from the building and let my IRA purchase the land the building sits on and get rent to go into and grow my retirement acct? 16:24
@MatSorensen
@MatSorensen 12 сағат бұрын
Keep in mind you can only use real rates losses from depreciation to offset your W-2 if you or your spouse are a real estate professional. Most people aren’t. But in the IRA or 401k world you don’t pay taxes on gains or income so there is nowhere for the depreciation to go and you don’t get to say I’ll take losses from my ira against my personal income but leave the income or gains in the IRA. That’s better than paying tax and then getting promise depreciation to offset. No you can’t mix up the land and property between your IRA and personally. That would cause a prohibited transaction.

I think starting a business would be more equal to buying land and building a house on it yourself. I think if you were to buy an already profitable business that's big enough to have management in place, that would be more comparable to buying cash flowing, appreciating real estate. Buying the business would still be a riskier venture and require some experience. However, you could put together some creative solutions such as recruiting a board of directors or selling some equity to current management to cover acquisition costs and improve your chances of success.

Thank you for this. So you cannot work on a property that your Solo 401k purchases? What are the rules for working on the property?
@MatSorensen
@MatSorensen 12 сағат бұрын
Correct. You can’t do physical work or labor on a property your IRA or solok owns. You can manage and oversee the property but can’t do the actual physical work. You can also do administrative work (leases, take calls on property, collect rents in IRA LLC and pay expenses or manage property manager).

So I see the pattern here, they something that is very good for you, the limit is very low like ROTH and HSA. They something that is good for “them” like 401k the limit is very high.

I just got a notice that I was randomly selected for a record inspection from DOL. They want things like general ledger, financial statements, corporate minutes, and normal things that I would think they would want like W2s, 941s, etc. Why does DOL need general ledger and financial statements? Feels like an IRS audit.

@@MatSorensen I think it's just checking records. The Alabama code they referenced, Sec 25-4-116 just talks about the requirement of keeping records. I was just confused on why the DOL is requesting documents to include my financial statements, corporate minutes, general ledger, etc. Thanks so much for the response!

Effective January 1, 2018, pursuant to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (Pub. L. No. 115-97), a conversion from a traditional IRA, SEP or SIMPLE to a Roth IRA cannot be recharacterized. The new law also prohibits recharacterizing amounts rolled over to a Roth IRA from other retirement plans, such as 401(k) or 403(b) plans

I don't know that converting to the top of the 22% bracket is a no-brainer. In my case the last $139,000 would have an effective tax rate of 21%. Even if my portfolio doubles I'll be 90 before RMDs get large enough to create that much income. And inflation will also raise deductions, so probably older than that.

Precise and to the point well done. Has anyone actually withdrawn from the HSA? What does the proper tax-free withdrawal look like, or is it just assumed that you mark this in your tax returns on a yearly basis if you use it?
