I worked at a regional sub shop, and we'd open at 10am, and close at 3am everyday. The 8in DR scalloped bread knives would last us for around 3-5 mounths before we'd retire a knive. Better than any consumer made scalloped knives.

We know you're talking about China. I lived in Japan for 20 years and had knock off cast iron. It was made by NavelGazer. Turned out it wasn't the pan that sucked so much but they designed the stove top to turn off when things got too hot. True story and the battery for the sensor used C cells so no stealing from the remote like ladies did with their vibrators. Anyway, good video and informative too without being boring.

Although you are nic picking the outsides of like the stargazer skillet, I really like the look of leaving the outsides of these pans unfinished. It gives them some character and makes them beautiful. There's even one that I saw that has a hammered outside rim, it's a very beautiful piece of art for sure. They at stargazer are meticulous about the flatness of the skillets. If you hadn't, you should look at the process they go thru, it's on KZfaq also. I was impressed with them. I love the Finex too you showed. It's a piece of art in itself. I agree that the inside rim should be sanded better too. I'm torn some between the Finex & Stargazer, but I believe as the are made now, you nailed it on the order of 1-4. My 1stpurchase is gonna be a Stargazer. I own a lodge, you get what you pay for. I wouldn't buy a Lodge, but it was a gift. Great review! Loved it!!!

After extensive research here in Christmas season 2023, I ordered a 12" Stargazer. It was in stock and ready to ship 2 days ago. It shipped same day. Don't have it yet. But its price is currently lower than the Field and the Finex, and is reported to both take and hold a season better than the other 2. Ergonomics + best reported season / nonstick properties won me over.

It's funny that you called the Finex a Lodge because Lodge wound up buying them out about a year after you made this video. As a note. Iron is actually a poor conductor of heat. That's why it takes a while to heat up and why it can hold heat for so long.

I just opened a 2012 tin of this tobacco. It´s dated as November 2012. The tobacco is simply amazing, i know when it is aged tobacco lot of differences comes out and i never tried a fresh one. What i can say is that im having one of the best experience with pipe tobacco ever. I never seen such amount of crystallization in aged tobacco, the humidity is perfect, no chemical taste although the smell out of the tin still strong.

I have long experience with a 10.5” Stargazer as well as decades with 10 & 12” Lodge skillets. To be brief, my everyday pan is the Stargazer and I find it without fault, weighs 2.1 kg, but for big group/family dinners the Lodges come out. They all perform well-cooking-it’s about the food not the pan! Handles, weight, rims-c’mon, you will never notice this in the meal will you.

Thanks for the video. I have the same exact saw. Do you know why after 2 cuts, the saw does not cut smoothly and smoke comes out of the engine and blade? What should I do to fix it? I tried replacing the chain but it still does the same thing?
@MrConcrt
@MrConcrt Жыл бұрын
Not exactly sure from what you've said. If there is smoke from the blade, I'd guess that the groove that the chain runs in has gotten full of sawdust. Some logs (especially if they're extra dry) will clog up the groove the chain runs in. Can even get to the point (with a deep cut that uses the whole length of the bar) that the chain gets completely stuck. I'm trying to remember as I type this , if that saw has an adjustment for oil to be added to the chain. If it does, turn it up to add more oil. Otherwise, may have to try to take cuts a bit more slowly so that the saw can keep the sawdust/cuttings cleared from the bar as you're cutting. If you can, try to maintain a reasonably fast speed for the chain as you cut that doesn't vary too much. This is actually quite hard with some logs, but if you cut slower and apply less pressure, the saw may work better.

Let’s be honest, Lodge used to make skillets like other vintage cast-iron products, smooth. In the 1950s they cheeped out and went full on mass production, and no longer put forth much effort into building their skillets. Hence, they’re so cheap.

I've smoked it all - very expensive tobaccos, boutique style blends, tons of German blends and drug store blends. My opinion for whatever its worth, is that CB Royal is an excellent tobacco that provides an all day mild smoke with a medium topping of vanilla and perhaps some other flavors which I didn't really notice - Its as good as many of the $20-25 blends I've bought and it cost me $11.00 - Plus its cut perfectly and stays lite with the perfect amount of moisture. There is a reason CB has been around a long time - Its damn good tobacco.

People crap on lodge... But at the end of the day, they sell American made, quality iron, at the "Chinese" price... Sure it might not be as "smooth" as a stargazer, but it also cost 26 dollars. I'm content with paying the lower cost, and smoothing the pan up myself. It's a 10 minute job, plus the time it takes to re season it... And then it's better than just about anything on the market, for a fifth the price.
@MrConcrt
@MrConcrt 2 жыл бұрын
Ripper334, Lodge does make good stuff and if you're happy with their pans, it's all good. But think about it this way... if it only takes you 10", how long would it take Lodge to do it on a commercial scale? 10 seconds perhaps? I love Lodge stuff, so why won't they? This is like the third review where Stargazer came out on top. The other two being Luis J Cast Iron cooking where he really liked this and butterpat and his wife really liked this and field and Kent Rollins who really liked this in field. Personally I am looking for a set where there is a dutch oven and a skillet and the dutch oven lid fits on the skillet. Lodge, Finex, Smithey, Field, Butterpat and Nest Homeware all have this. So far I have narrowed it down to Lodge, Smithey or Field.

Thanks much for the useful information. I have a question: I know that the portion of oil which oiling the chain can be regulated. On what depends that? I mean when I must put the oil pomp at min and when at max?
@MrConcrt
@MrConcrt 2 жыл бұрын
Nick, I can't say that this is the official answer that might come from Husq or Jonsered... but we usually make those changes based upon the bar length and type of chain. If you were to put a longer bar on or perhaps a more aggressive chain, they will require more oil. Also, if you are cutting in colder weather, you might adjust the oil to flow a bit more because it'll be thicker and less will tend to be pumped out. Lastly, if you're cutting wood that's punky (somewhat decayed - dry & dusty) I'll turn it up, otherwise the chain can get pretty dry. All in all, I tend to run the saws towards the high end of their range but it uses more oil. Thanks for watching and your question, I hope that helps!

Nice Job! Some good points. However, Field is garbage. The point of cast iron is heat retention and momentum. Thin walls to save weight is simply ridiculous. Build some muscles, use the better pans and get over it. Helper tabs are meant to be used. Cast iron should be heavy! Finex, is simply, and without comparison, the best pans made-period! The intently designed, and not smoothed/polished walls, with the pebbled tumbling, are, in fact, the best choice. The first thing, on all pans, to deteriorate is the smooth/seasoned walls. Bad idea and design period. it may look nice, give you oohs and aahs, but not good for longevity of the pan. The pebbled walls, actually help perpetuate the long term seasoning and stability. This is by design, not an oversight or carelessness. If you want smooth, buy a non-stick pan. Silly! Stargazer is a great pan. Aside from the smoothed/polished walls. The handle is great, but very uncomfortable without purchasing the leather sheath option. The helper handle, is the best of all competitors. Problem is, no lids! In my opinion, all cast iron products. should have lids. From steaming , melting, presenting at the dinner table, staying hot while finishing other side dishes like rolls, salads, drinks and sauces, is critical to keep the integrity of the efforts made by cooking with cast iron to begin with, is just common sense.. Finex is the best product out there. Cost, should never be a concern if you are committed to better cooking. 50 or 100 dollars more, should not be considered if you are investing in better cooking and something your children should hopefully fight over, when you are dead and and gone. They will not even blink about it with a lesser quality pan like a Lodge. Finex dutch ovens are also the best product period. Watch Cowboy Ken Rollins on You-Tube and you will come to Jesus on Finex products. Spend the money! The joy of cooking and love will pay you back forever!

Thank you for your review. I am truly shocked by how freaking expensive these pans are, considering how little actual work and materials are involved in fabricating most of them. I've been successfully using (and reusing) the so-called 'disposable' ones (for 10 times and more) that you get for a quarter or so apiece in boxes of 4 or more and can't understand why it wouldn't be possible to fabricate them out of thicker metal, let's say, twice of 4 times thicker the thickness of disposables, at a reasonably scaled up price of a dollar or so each instead the 10 to 20 dollars they sell for.
