First, thanks for watching, subscribing and chiming in. As for your question, do you not want to drive a stick? I will say that the manual is much more engaging for pleasure driving. But for traffic or track use, the PDK is superior. Tiptronic is very reliable but would only be an advantage in stop and go traffic. Thanks for watching. As I started the video with, any 911 is a great car and if there was only one, we would all love it. But the 997 really is the high mark in the history of Porsche’s famous, now 60 year old sports car. And yes, the market agrees which is even more meaningful than my opinion. I now have over 71,000 miles on my 997.2 GTS so obviously I am not driving to preserve my cars value. But I do believe the 997 and especially the 997.2 which is mechanically superior and also was built in significantly lower numbers, will only increase in value from this point. @GTSCarLife Ай бұрын
First of all, congratulations on being disciplined and working towards your goal. Few feelings in the world better than setting goals and working hard to achieve them. As for the scarcity of 997.2, yes. Porsche made very few in the first place because the timing coincided with the great global recession. So few made to start and the ones that are for sale often times have been modded or wrecked or both. All very bad for desirability and value. But the sellers know how strong the demand is for them, so they will still ask top dollar. As for interior color, black is so boring but the most desirable choice simply because it wears well and hides blemishes. And yes, PDK was the shiny new toy so more than half of buyers chose it. I have always owned manuals and would never buy an “automatic“ sports car. But when my wife finally allowed me to replace my 2003 996.2 manual with a 997.2 GTS, which I wanted from the moment it was first introduced, I too struggled with finding my perfect example. So I settled for PDK and got most of the other features that mattered to me. I just bought my son a 2011 987.2 S with the 6-speed manual, and driving it has served to remind me how much more fun and involving a manual truly is. But I do spend a lot of time on track and PDK is definitely better on track, so I just enjoy my car and focus on how much I love it. You will find your car. Use AutoTempest, PCA classifieds and use the Porsche pre-owned website DAILY. Best of luck in your search and please let me know when you achieve your goal! I think your review is biased, the 991 feels way more modern, even though it is larger than a 997, it still is compact to modern traffic, where the 997 now feels like a small car, akin to a classic, which is not always what you want. The 991 additional dimensions make it far superior in the GT models. I have a 991 GT3 touring and a 997.2 turbo s, I love them both but the 991 GT3 is peak driver experience in my opinion

@GTSCarLife Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. You are entitled to have your opinion. But if you actually think this through, it would make no sense for me to just be biased and what, make an entire channel and do various road tests to what, further a bias? No. I just bought my 7th Porsche last week. I can own whichever cars I determine to be best. I am fortunate that I have the opportunity to drive and ride in some of the finest sports and GT cars in the world, usually on a Formula 1 track, and so from my extensive experience I have drawn certain conclusions. As I stated at the very beginning of this review, the point of this comparison was to compare and find out which 911 delivers the better sports car experience. Sports car. Not track monster. The 911 that delivers the better sports car experience. Because really, that is what the 911 has represented for 60 years now. The epitome of a sports car. Sure, some, including mine, also get tracked and some even race, but foremost a Porsche 911 is designed to provide owners with a traditional sports car experience, rear engine placement and all. And by that measure, the 997 generation is in fact the best 911. And the market agrees. Thanks for subscribing and sharing your view!
@shaunonig1979
@shaunonig1979 Ай бұрын
I think there is a bias created just by owning and just really liking your 997, and there is nothing wrong with that, but nevertheless a bias develops. I disagree that the 997 is a better sports car experience, maybe a more raw experience, that's for sure, the further you go back the more raw it becomes. The reason why I see a bias is because alot of the comments you made about the 991 vs 997 are opinions but you discuss them as if they are a matter of fact

@shaunonig1979 Sports car feel is subjective. Quoting 0-60 and skid pad numbers does not factor into which model is more true to the original sports car intent. @@GTSCarLife To answer your question...I was wondering how anyone could seriously consider the 996 being the best 911. Excluding the 996 Turbo and the GT / RS models. They are of very good quality and also have reliable engines. (Engine block from 993..!) The normal Carrera, on the other hand, is purely a budget car and the poor quality is not just limited to the interior. I currently drive, among other things, a 993, 3.8 liter with 300 hp and a 996 Carrera has never left me behind on the highway. I've never seen a normal 996 Carrera on the racetrack. Porsche officially advises against driving these cars on the race track. The reason for this is the (cheap) engine design without dry sump lubrication. The "open deck" design of the normal Carrera engines and the choice of materials for the cylinder coating are purely cost-oriented and the engines cannot be compared in any way with the real ones (Metzger engines). As a driver with a racing license, I regularly drive on the racetracks in Hockenheim and Dijon. Nobody in my area drives a 996 Carrera. The 996 Carrera is a car for posers and not for drivers.

There are many print and KZfaq automotive reviewers, some, like Chris Harris feature hard core track tests, and others delve into stats and mechanical features. I wanted this channel to reflect what it actually feels like to drive, typically as daily drivers, some of the most exciting cars most people will ever own. I want to share what is actually feels like to live with these cars, on a daily basis. Spending as much time as I do at the track, I see a lot of GR86 models. In fact, I was fortunate enough to ride in a Toyota GR Yaris a year ago, on track at Circuit of The Americas in Austin. The owner had driven the car through the night, from Mexico, to attend a track day I was instructing at. let me tell you, that things was ridiculous! The sheer performance and handling abilities of that car far exceeded anything its looks promised! Anyway, the GR86 is a car I really like. It reminds me of the 944 and Miata, a simple and well balanced sports car that allows drivers to really develop their talents, with a lower risk of getting in over heir heads. I knew it was a question so many Porsche 911 enthusiasts, and future 911 buyers were curious about, and nobody else had done a comparison like it at the time. While any 911 is an awesome car, there are significant differences between the air cooled models, the 996 and 997 models, and the larger 991 and 992 gens. They are in fact very different machines that appeal to different people for very different reasons. My 09 C2S launch spec car really captures my expectations of what a true luxury touring sports car should be. I really feel that the 991 is more of a sports car for the masses while the 997.2 the last gen for enthusiasts.

@@GTSCarLife Cool. I have a 2012 Targa 4S. Wish I had the X51 option. Love the 408 hp and the center lock wheels on GTS. Special!

@jimgraves665 Yes, indeed the GTS is special which is what appealed to me when Porsche first announced it. I especially love it being a rear drive wide body. And on track, there is a noticeable difference. But for daily use or canyon carving, the S feels essentially the same. And your Targa is definitely special and rare. Enjoy your Targa 4S. That’s one really special 911 and I promise you aren’t missing anything on the street!

Own both a 997.2 and 991.1. Used to have a 991.2 which I had for less than a year. 997 does have the most Porsche feel and look but probably will be first to go. 991 is still small and nimble, better for bringing along the kids, has better tech, and looks a little more special (I have the factory sport design package with ducktail). Also sounds epic with Porsche sport exhaust. Pse on the 991.2 sounds terrible. 991 feels more planted than the 997. Steering on mine is pretty damn close to my 997. Steering on the 991.2 was too light and artificial. The 997 has better leather but more creaks inside. 991 at stock height (pasm) sits lower than my lowered 997. So surprisingly feels more sporty inside. 997 feels faster for some reason (maybe the size). Can’t go wrong with either but for a daily driver 991 wins. For nostalgia 997 wins. But to truly get an analog experience you will have to go air cooled as both 997 and 991 feel too modern.

Thanks for watching, subscribing and contributing your experiences. The ducktail option definitely looks fantastic on the 991. I wish Porsche offered it for the 997

Just bought my first Porsche - a low low mileage 2011 911 997.2 Targa 4. Absolutely love it. Feels like I’m driving a performance machine. I test drove one of the new 992 models and I agree - it’s fast, performs great but feels like a video game. Or a spaceship. I don’t feel connected to the road. Didn’t like it at all.

I have a 996 c4s. Some tasteful non destructive mods to massage as much power out of the 3.6 as I can. Lately, been feeling like it’s super fuddy duddy driving on the highway with all the new toys flying around. But I wonder if all that new tech and more disconnect mean it’s faster but not more fun. Tesla plaid is just about the fastest damn car out there for the money but don’t see many of them despite the ridiculous speed. Is it because under that speed there’s no soul? After a couple of stomach curdling launches, does that gimmick sorta get old ? My 2004 C4s is not nearly as fast. But I feel some connection to the road when I drive it. I may be searching for something I already have. the turbo level up in the 911 lineup, is it trading character for speed? The 997 is faster than a 996… 991 faster than 997 and so on. Where’s the sweet spot? 997 gts? 997 turbo, turbo s? Hopefully I can find joy in my 996 again, even with getting its doors blown off by anything more modern. The sports car club is such a rat race… feels tempting at times to just go completely opposite and get the smallest, slowest car I can find. Leaving the competition behind altogether. Sports car club, unfortunately means you will always be unsatisfied, because you know out there there is something faster and better and probably cheaper. So what’s the goal of a 911 I ask myself?

Short answer, yes. A sports car - a true sports car, has soul. Tesla does not make a sports car. They make nice electric appliances. A Taycan has soul. Anyone who wants to argue that has clearly not spent any real time driving one. A 911 is all about soul. It’s completely normal to get used to things and people we have - even take them for granted. If you have the ability to stop driving your 996 for a couple weeks and daily something different, you’ll likely remember why the 996 excites you after taking it on your next drive. As for the sweet spot? It’s hard to beat a 996 rear drive, manual transmission coupe for sheer driving enjoyment. For track use mixed in with daily use, a 997.2 GTS is my choice. The main difference on the street is the more refined and higher quality interior. On track, the 997.2 GTS turns significantly better than the 996. But I’d be very happy if I still daily drove my 2003 996.2 manual. They are wonderful cars. I can’t say my 997 is better - but it is nicer inside and it does drive way better on track. If you ever replace your C4S, try the rear wheel drive Carrera. The 911 was intended to be rear engine, rear wheel drive and the driving dynamics and steering feel are different and lighter from the 4. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing your thoughts.

I can’t figure out the whole 99# nomenclature. 964 then 993 then 996 then 997 then 991 then 992. There are 2 things I get out of this. A headache and the realization Germans can’t count.

Crazy, right? It makes no sense. But neither does a rear-engined super fast sports car (the actual racing version of the 911 is now fully mid engined!) And yet we still love these things. Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your thoughts!

I’ve watched A LOT of 911 content. Owned a bunch of different eras. This was an excellent apples to very slightly more modern apples comparison. Excellent work. I currently drive an 3.2, but would 100% reacquire a 997 as it’s my top choice for ‘modern’ 911. 997 turbo or any 997.2 for the win, for me. Again, really well composed review (even if you’ve shown your bias with your ownership) Thanks and cheers amigo

Thanks for watching, subscribing and contributing your comments. I do find it funny when some people claim I am "biased" because I have one. The truth is I can afford any 911 I want. I owned a different 911 when Porsche announced the final version of the street 997. I was at the North American launch party for the car. I chose the 997.2 GTS because it was the most compelling, most perfect 911 Porsche made in my opinion, and I knew that with the impending launch of the new, larger 991 version, Porsche would never again build something as special as the 997.2 GTS. It was the one model where they threw everything they had - Power Kit, Center Lock Wheels, Wide Body RWD, enhanced styling front, rear and side (GT2 RS side skirts) into one, final and ultimate street version. The same thing can be said about the 993, which I also love, but which is not nearly as well suited for daily use, and cannot compare on track, both being how I use my car regularly. Cheers!
