This tiny six inch professional video monitor probably started life in a television studio somewhere in the 1990s.
With a reboot of MAX HEADROOM in the works it's time to remember MAX in his native habitat, a cathode ray tube.

The thick red wire returns electrons that came from the electron gun, to the inside of the phosphor coated viewing surface of the tube, to the flyback transformer. Its more of a 'waste line' than a 'supply line'. One of the first things to do when servicing a CRT is to ground out any charge left in the circuit. We used to do this by clip leading the grounded chassis to a long flathead screwdriver, then probing under the suction cup boot until it made contact with the conductor inside. If charged enough, an audible 'pop' can be heard. If you disconnect this from the tube without doing this first, then touch the port in the side of the tube (or maybe the conductor under the boot), it will give you a very intense static electricity shock you will not forget. Because I did that once.

Not sure if you caught it, but the screen on the DVD player had some interesting PWM artifacts when you were adjusting shutter speed.
@enojelly9452
@enojelly9452 10 ай бұрын
The aim is not so much PWM, but multiplexing. Saves a lot of cost to share signal lines across the segments in a "row/column" arrangement, instead of having one line for each segment. The downside is that you now truly can't control the segments individually at the same time (since, again, there isn't a dedicated line for each of them), and you have to effectively control them "one after another". This is done fast enough to trick our persistence of vision, but with high camera shutter speeds you get aliasing which reveals the magic.
@HonestAuntyElle
@HonestAuntyElle 10 ай бұрын
@@enojelly9452 I know what multiplexing is. I also know that that the shutter speed is interfering with the LCD because the pulse width's and timings of the led segments is different. So whilst it's not using a PWM driver in the traditional sense, I don't think me calling it PWM artifacts is necessarily incorrect.

This is 10 months late, but the DVD player's logo looks very similar to the Chinese electronics manufacturer Midea's. While I haven't found any direct connection between the two, your guess that it is related to karaoke equipment is probably correct as Maike (presumably 麦克) is the first two out of three characters for microphone in Chinese (translated phonetically from English).

Only you could take the testing and fixing of inputs on a color monitor and make an interesting video about it! Nice fix on the dry joints - well spotted. Was wondering why you dont use liquid flux when re soldering points in close proximity? Also, nice use of the max headroom footage. Interesting that he was marketed as a computer gemerated character (as a kid i always believed it) but later to learn it was just a guy in strange makeup and some clever video editing. Not sure it needs a reboot tho.
@JanusCycle
@JanusCycle Жыл бұрын
If it's just a quick solder then sometimes I wing it. If the reboot is just a scripted series then it's likely to be quite ordinary. But If they make a real A.I. from Matt Frewer's voice and movements. And he breaks from his broadcast past, into a socially mediated future, then that could be quite interesting. Or if they just let Matt Frewer go hog wild crazy improvising the character to extremes as he did in the early days then that would be amazing.

Not only was this very educational, it was also fun to watch and Max Headroom was the perfect choice for the CRT. I have always been fascinated with Max Headroom and especially am fascinated in retrospect how ahead of the time this was. How inventive these guys were with recreating the early cgi look with analogue media and last but not least the impact on pop culture. Unfortunately I was just a kid in the 80s and here in Germany we only got the series / movie but not the appearances on talk shows and commercials etc. so I would really like to know the title of the DVD you were using and if it's still being distributed. Max Headroom is way underrated and I would like to run some of the footage on my own CRTs in my 80s Van for shits and giggles on meetups and for the upcoming official certification as a classic vehicle (tax, emission and insurance benefits in Germany) Thank you very much for your work and time! It was really fun to watch this!

Interesting episode. I was only just thinking about Max recently and was going to have him on one of my videos but I have not found any footage of him yet. Did you find yours in an old tape recording. He was a game changer back in the 80's. Can't wait to see his come back. Your CRT footage looked fine to me. I use many different cameras to films CRTs and find that one set of settings works well on one camera and not another. I have to find what works when you come to filming with a particular camera. Lighting can effect the results too. Especial led panels.

Couple notes for you: Tip for recording without artifacts that may or may not work: If your camera has a composite video out, try connecting that to the "SYNC" port on the back of the monitor and switching the SYNC switch to "External". This will get the monitor and the camera "marching in step", at least in theory - and might alleviate the artifact you see, which is being caused by the rolling shutter of the camera being out-of-phase with the scanning of the CRT. Set the shutter speed to the framerate of the video source or slower. In many cases this will work - though it is a bit of a kludge. The sync port is designed to receive a "genlock" or "blackburst" signal, so named because it's simply black video with a colorburst reference pulse. Normal composite video has everything needed for synchronization, though sometimes the pesky picture information can mess up the works a bit. It is also dependent on how the timing of the camera's shutter relates to its video output. Digital processing can induce delay which might make this not do what we want. If you have a very-high-end camera with a genlock *input*, you can route a signal generator to both monitor and camera which should do the job, as that will be set up as it's engineered to be set up. On framerates: Pretty much all consumer electronics like that DVD player will output a fixed framerate from the CVBS and Component outputs - for the simple reason that, during the analog era, consumer television sets were designed (generally) to only reproduce one video system. NTSC's 60fields/30frames in North America and Japan mostly, and PAL's 50fields/25frames most everywhere else. (i'm ignoring secam for brevity). The fieldrate corresponds with the AC mains frequency of the area. To get a 25fps output, try a DVD player from the europe market. Modern sets are somewhat independent of the video system, and can play back multiple framerates, as when connected over HDMI they function more like computer monitors than televisions. But, that sony is a professional set and it will properly display PAL, NTSC and even SECAM, so theoretically, any DVD player from any market should be able to output to it, provided you can power the player correctly. Hope that's helpful and not overexplained or underexplained! (edit: upon watching the whole video, you've got it down pretty well!)
@JanusCycle
@JanusCycle Жыл бұрын
This is some great detail, thank you. My camera does not have composite output. But does have HDMI output. I wonder what would happen if I put a kludge on top of a kludge with an HDMI to composite converter. When making this video I had a very dark black bar appearing sometimes. The only way I was able to move it out of the way was to keep power cycling my camera, a Sony ZV-1, until it randomly moved to the blanking period. As you saw in the video, I explored every setting until I was able to get some good shots for the video. I still have much to learn and appreciate your comment.
@itmaybeokay
@itmaybeokay Жыл бұрын
@@JanusCycle the hdmi converter might work - though I much doubt it. Hdmi converter will be imparting a small delay and basically creating its own sync. I suspect it will be too far divorced from the camera shutter to help, worth a shot if you’ve already got the hardware but I wouldn’t buy anything to make this work. I actually took a way too deep dive looking into finding a sync generator with an adjustable output - couldn’t find one that exists that I was sure would work - though it should be possible to build one out of a cheap esp32. This is a somewhat back burner project, but if I get one working, let me know where I should send you one :-)

I have one of those as well, along my 9" and 14" ones. For some reason I *really* like the HR 9" one and barely ever use the 6" one. Since I use mine with various computers from the 80s it really sucks that it's missing S-Video inputs on the 6" one. Resolution and geometry of the tube also is kinda underwhelming for a PVM and the 9" only slightly larger. The 6" is surprisingly light for a PVM tho.

Welcome to the world Broadcast television standards :-) In a broadcast studio, there would be one main sync feed that would be attached to all the equipment, this would allow filming of televisions on camera and they would be synced together. This poses a problem for modern day technology, as you have found out, since it doesn't have a sync out. Even if you converted it, the delay would be enough to cause problems. In a broadcast studio this was possible using frame storage, which was triggered by the sync pulse to release the frame at the appropriate time. This technology has long since disappeared. Notwithstanding the incompatibility between various standards that now exists including Pal at 25 frame/s, NTSC at 29.97 frame/s, film at the slower frame rate of 24 frames per second, and of course the non-standard broadcast double frame rates of 50 frame/s and 60 frame/s used for progressive and interlaced down converting, professional digital cameras can now film at any frame rate as standard or with a firmware modification. I'm sorry if this is probably not what you want to hear, but I feel to get a perfect picture, you are going to have to look out for a frame storage unit with variable timing and some form of sync out from the camera and see how it goes. Possibly more trouble than it's worth, but an interesting project nonetheless. All the best, Aston.
