Absolutely fantastic video on everything you need to know about uchi mata! A real gem! Watching at the 0.5 speed offered by KZfaq allows you to see all the details (and there are many!). Thank you for the wonderful job you did! “It is not important to be better than someone else, but to be better than yesterday.”

Incredible stuff. In your opinion, is it possible to be unable to do the technique if one isn't powerful enough in the legs ? When I try it, I swing the leg... and ... nothing ! (I play judo Uchimata-less, and it's fine, but I'd like to be able to do it a little bit just so I don't feel so stupid.)

I find this very helpful! Thank you for making the video! For years, I've always been a seoi/ogoshi player, but my injuries have forced me to change my game a bit in order to keep playing! This was a nice mechanics review to get my 40 year old body reacquainted!

@do7601 No, very different. Ko uchi makikomi is similar to tani otoshi: tori attaches to uke's hips and sits down into the throw. Ko uchi gake works more like an uchi mata, with a similar see sawing of the upper body with the leg swinging up. Very different mechanics at play in these throws!

Too bad this video doesn't focus on the main anatomical element which is the hips. Indeed, Harai-goshi is a technique from the Koshi-waza group, just like Ô-goshi, Koshi-guruma, for example. It would have been better to emphasize how Tori's hips are used in this technique rather than focusing so much on the leg work. The sweeping is first done with the hips and not with the leg. The leg comes in a second time to support and amplify the action of the hips.

I would say, like uchi mata, there are hip dominant and leg dominant variations. I agree that harai is by definition a hip throw.
