I would love it if you guys made a navy blue tsuba for a kendo shinai. I would probably buy it immediately. Thanks for all the tips btw, love the content.
Great points about how us beginners should approach high level Sensei during kendo practice - as always thanks, esp answering my question about WKC. Sounds exciting

How much heavier is it compared to the „original vanguard“? And is it also a good option for future shiai? I couldnt decide between the two for my first bogu! Any advice to help me devide? (PS: I would go to the sentinel but dont have the „time“ to wait for 16 weeks 😂)
@TheKendoShow6 күн бұрын
Weight wise it is about the same as the Original VANGUARD- which is to say it’s very light weight, despite being protective, which is exactly how we’ve designed it. It’s a fantastic choice for Shiai as well as practice as it is also light, comfortable, and looks good too. I’ve used it myself in Shiai in the past. It’s a great all round choice as a first set 👍

Hi sensei, thanks for providing us with another insightful kendo video. I've been curious about this for a while, but is it possible to score an ippon with tsuki as a hiki waza, or is this considered hansoku? Consequently, would it be hansoku to push your opponent away on their mune using the kensen?

I believe 掛け声 just literally means shout as in yelling with a loud voice (emphasis on loudness here) while 発声 can be any kind of vocalization and isn't specifically tied to being loud. The reason 発声 is used more often in kendo context I think is because technically speaking your voice doesn't have the requirement of being specifically loud. You just need yo vocalize your target. Also kakegoe is used in everyday context to mean shout as well so hassei is a more formal substitute used in kendo(or similar) context only...

I would love to see a video on how to break out a new set of Kendogi and Hakama. What you do personally when you get a new set, washing it? drying it? Or do you just use it right out of the pack. Thank you for all you do for the Kendo community!

"the purpose of kendo is to improve our character" Ha! Yeah right, if you believe that I've got a bridge in London I can sell you. I've never met more arrogant, money stealing, spiteful, unfriendly people, then kendoka. It's this propaganda b.s. pushed by folk like this vlogger, of a sport making you a better character, that makes the sport's participants insufferable liars and cheats. Don't get me wrong, I'm not shitting on the sport of kendo, the sport is great fun and immensely thrilling. I'm calling out this false propaganda pushed by such baloney-spillers that instills a haughty and arrogant perspective in kendoka who start believing themselves to be somehow apart from society, somehow better than others because of their sport (kendo). What tripe! What rot! "Pride goeth before the fall" and all that.

Hello, sensei. I would like to ask a question about shaping the men to achieve a Mount Fuji look. I have heard that the mendare should be tied so it is parallel to the height of the monomi. Others say it should be lower, right above the chichikawa bar. What is your opinion? Thank you.

Hello Andy Sensei! I've been doing kendo for a year or so and am middle-aged. People remark about how I give 100% and bring a lot of energy and kiai, but I seem to invent a new way to get injured every few months. Looking back the injuries are usually jigeiko-related. The main feedback I get from senseis is to relax, which I've been working on with minor success. I was wondering how to change my mindset or training to avoid injuries so I can continue without interruption. "Taking it easy" during jigeiko feels like I"m letting my partner and senseis down. Arigato!

Regarding the “how to wear bogu” video, the branding needs an update and the sound is inferior to all the newer videos, of course the actual content is all fine and valid. Thank you for explaining the bogu differences once again, i watched the presentation videos and I more or less understood the differences but it was nice to hear you confirm it once again before I commit. Cheers! And another question: will you have time to take part in any godo geiko at the wkc?

Would you recommend the Toukon to a beginner (about 2 months in) or would I „forget“ how to hold a round grip shinai? :D

No you would not forget. Lots of beginners find oval grips useful to get used to holding the Shinai properly.

Legend has it that just a single glimpse of this prestige bogu makes people start kendo. Going to a business meeting? Wear kouten and all your business colleagues will be doing kendo! Going to pick up your kid from school? Wear the kouten and next they there will be about 300 children waiting in front of the dojo, eager to start kendo. Wearing this amazing bogu gives you instant access to hachidan skills and grants you the title of “osensei”. Then again, even if none of that is true, you still end up with a bogu that looks dog’s bollocks! So it is a win-win kind of situation.

Except Yamazaki Sensei 😂... He doesn't like the left hand coming off for dou strikes. So he's keen on everyone attempting the slide up maneuver to keep both hands on. This came up at last year's BKA Summer Seminar but Andy was in a different hall with Squad. I'm trying to learn it now actually. Having some success in kihon but it's yet to make it into my keiko. I agree though that this is not make or break for a good dou strike in most people's books.

8:06 is there really no such word as gi? I practice jujitsu (japanese and brazilian) as well as judo, and the word gi is very widespread. I've heard people use the term "judogi" before, to refer specifically to a judo specific gi. I've also definitely read the term "aikidogi" as well.
@bubblegumnipples163923 күн бұрын
I've found that if you call it a "Gi" in japan no one knows what you're talking about, unless they've trained overseas. You have to call it a dogi or kendogi. My Japanese is kinda shit but Ki just means "wear". The K sound is softened to a G sound if there's another word infront. So instead of Doki it becomes Dogi, meaning what you "wear" when practicing budo. Kimono means "Wearing thing", An Item you wear. Kiru means "to wear" So if you say "Gi" its like you're saying the word "Wear" but pronounced as if a previous character is missing.
