It's insane how infectious the sans animations were, I even made one as a kid and I knew NOTHING about Undertale.

One of the things I think that makes this a masterpiece is how hard the sans fight is. It requires so much of you, that by the time you beat him, you don’t feel the sadness you did when you killed undyne and papyrus. It’s a feeling of relief, just like what I’d imagine a serial killer with no real ties to anyone would feel

As someone who’s been a part of the Undertale Fandom ever since 2016, I can see how absolutely INSANE it would look from the outside. I wasn’t on Tumblr at the time, but I was on KZfaq. I was there to witness the emerging of Undertale literally everywhere online. While I was still picking apart the original game, AUs were being pumped out like clockwork. Fangames, fanart, animations, webseries, lets plays, fan songs, anything you can think of. I distinctly remember watching those sans fight animations, especially the “Beautiful Day” and “Stronger Than You” ones. v0idless, SpectroliteAAA, TC-96, CrayonQueen(loverofpiggies), and Jael Peñaloza literally RAISED me. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I was today. Yes, the Undertale fandom can be insane, but it means so much to all of us. Thank you for the video!

Watching this about two years after its release. This is absolutely beautiful. The fact success isn’t always something positive is a very important message to spread, and I thank you for doing so. I’m not saying success is bad, but success definitely could change things entirely- for better or for worse. Speaking of AUs, I still feel Horrortale is the best one. Not because it's darker and 'scarier' but because unlike most other AUs which just either swap a few characters around, change the world it's in or just make them edgier, but because it takes place AFTER one of the neutral endings in the main game. So in a way, you could read it as semi-canon to the main game. It takes an already canon AU and expands on it, which is why I love it so much.

I like how toby, instead of continuing the story, decided to basically do the same thing everyone else did with the whole au thing and make deltarune

I played Undertale for the first time in 2017. I played it many many times, but i’ve never done the No Mercy run. This video is like a rollercoaster of nostalgia for me. I was very fond of AUs and i was very down in the fandom’s rabbit hole. Listening to you talking about, with also the OST in the background, made me tear up a bit. the impact that undertale had was PHENOMINAL. i met my best friend in 5th grade by having undertale fan art on the cover of my binder, and almost 7 years later we have stayed friends, and are STILL lowkey fans of undertale 😭

Sometimes, I kinda forgot just how small Undertale actually used to be. Like Toby Fox is surely surprised to see just how far his game blew up into popularity and most likely just wanted to make a fun meta RPG with inspiration from Earthbound. And revisiting it during the pandemic really showed me that there was more to Undertale than I remembered and I like it even more. Also, maybe it's just me, but I kinda realised much of the main media that I was focused on seem to have a story element of "meta" (i.e. Undertale as before, Homestuck, the Spider-Verse films). Maybe it's just that anything that has deep lore and goes meta are my appeal and it's always the ones that make me think a lot (and of course, those media will always have massive fandoms, for better or worse).

Internet's reaction to Undertale can be summarized in one sentence: Someone built a small campfire, then another person came in and added more branches, then another circled it in rocks and added coal, then another built a fireplace around it and used some gasoline, then another guy had the briliant idea to use jet fuel, and now we have a forest fire. I'm not usually the one to comment on videos but i have to say that this is the best video essay I've seen. Undertale is one of my all time favourite games. I love the way this describes it. Its so good. Its exactly describes the experience of finding Undertale and finding its massive fandom. And I've been in this fandom since 2017-18. I even cried a little at the end lol.

It’s so really sad that the Underfell and Underswap creators were bullied to the point where they selected their blogs altogether, but what’s sadder is that they aren’t the only ones. The creators of this AU called Flowerfell (an AU branched off from Underfell where Frisk is cursed to grow flowers every time they die but instead of attempting to prevent it by fighting back they just try to power through it with kindness with the help of Sans and Flowey) were harassed badly due to mixed reasons. I can remember the reasons why but I know some of it had to do with shipping.

I want to make an AU about a particularly eloquent Tem that wears a cape and - oh fuck it exists already.

Undertale became so popular because it's so heartwarming, calming and pleasing world. I've seen some aus and most of them are actually good, well animated, sometimes well written, actually some of them were amazing, but they are stories for themselves, even though they are literally aus. I can't really explain it well, but even though some aus are very well done, undertale has its own original unique charm that we will love and remember. After all, aus were created because people wanted more of undertale. It was certainly one of the most heartwarming and emotional games ever to be made. For me, Undertale is Undertale, and bad sides of the fanbase shouldn't affect on what we think of this beautiful game.

The fact that Sans' AUs are their own fandom with intricate lore and interactions is really a testament to the power of the Undertale fandom

The Undertale fandom is like a microcosm (maybe the wrong word given it's size) for what I love and fear about us as humans. The small things done by individuals and small groups that when combined with enough of us working together can become some massive system both beautiful & dreadful.

I'm glad when you said "What if all aus got together" you mentioned Underverse (which i did not know of until now) instead of HELP_tale. HELP_tale is an underrated yet terrifying AU and i'm glad you did not stumble upon it and decided to introduce it to the viewers of this video.

Undertale has one of the best and the worst community at the same time.

This came up on my auto play and as I listened to it I couldn’t help but have dumb smile on my face the entire time you were talking about Undertale. I understood everything that you talked about and knew every single AU you mentioned because I was in all of them. I mean even now I am in them and watch them. But your video made me remember the wonder that I experienced, when I first discovered Undertale. It was a huge part of my life for me, I followed and consumed every single of content that I could find since I discovered the game in early 2016. It was my source of joy and my inspiration to draw/create things. These last 3 years I’ve gone through a lot of major changes in life with family drama and death. Now I’m on my own(literally, I mean I’m living on my own and cut off a lot of family but I digress), going through a lot of things but I still love Undertale just the same. Its really been with me through thick and think, with its animations, music, etc. It’s a warm and comforting feeling. I really hope that what the mirror tells me is true, “Despite everything, it’s still you.” because I feel so different and much more exhausted than how I was just a couple years ago. I really wish I can go back to how I was before everything happened. Though I guess despite everything, I’m still me.

This video has reminded me why I love this game so much and why I love the best parts of the community. I came into it watching a random compilation of comic dubs and from those alone became so endeared to the characters. After playing it for myself falling into the rabbit hole of fanart, AUs, and ask blogs was so fun. I only wish I could go back and experience it all again. It's goofy, and a lot of it is just Sans, but it's also amazing in its own way.

Wow..This video is an emotional rollercoaster. I was laughing, crying, feeling depressed, feeling hopeful. The Undertale fandom is truly something special and I can’t thank the game enough for simply existing. I really wish I was a fan when the game first came out so I could experience all this in real time. I’ve been wanting to make my own AU but can’t focus for long periods of time so I never bothered to try. I really hope that the Undertale fandom continues to grow and develop new amazing AUs to add to this crazy never ending list. Toby must be so proud yet so scared. I can’t even imagine what he must’ve been (and possibly still is) going through. I really hope he takes care of himself.

I loved this vid. Need to get up for uni in 4 hours, but still thank you very much yt for recommending me this. I have not followed the Undertale’s fandom for several years now, but used to be a hella active member of it, making art, music and even trying out coding some of my own boss fights. Needless to say all of that was pretty armature level and TM “Not Good”, but it still gave me sort of a kick start in those things that I now really enjoy doing. Undertale also reminds me of a time I hung out in Amino. New voices every day, and new faces every week when we decide to meet up. I really can not appreciate Toby Fox, the game and the fandom more, for all the creative inspirations and remarkably fun times it brought to me. Even though Im 2 years late, and you’ll probably not see this, amazing work on the video John and thank you very much for reminding me of those good times and emotions!

This sums up my 4 years spent deep deep in the 'edits' sub community of undertale from vine to tumblr to instagram where it all basically ended . If you were to ask me today I would tell you a community of people this lovely and inspired by each other to create cannot ever exist on this world let alone the internet.

Undertale actually changed my life in so many ways, it's truly a masterpiece and going back and seeing how it grew up to this, it's amazing

my birthday the past few years has been confusing and tough for me to acknowledge. the moment i turned 25 i started crying and couldn’t place exactly why and still really can’t other than being confronted with the idea of the future coming at me and still being unsure of what i should expect of it. i’m approaching 27 this month and am still feeling confused about it, but watching this video and you reminding me of the reassurance this indie game gives us that no matter what, things will be okay because it’s still me, it always has been me, and that won’t ever change no matter the time that’s passed. i no longer feel like the constantly happy and sweet child that everybody said i was, and that’s okay. it’s okay to acknowledge that i feel like i’m somebody a little different, shaped by things i never expected to happen to me. that really is the overall message for undertale, that even through hardships that are cruel or unfair, through sudden revelations that shake you to your core, that despite everything, it’s still you.

I honestly find the Undertale soundtrack to be probably the most emotionally powerful aspect of Undertale in my opinion. Most of the songs give me almost comforting chills and make me smile, and a few even put me on the verge of tears if I’m alone. Amazing job Toby
