Ok I think I did this wrong 😭. My basement shower was stubbed in. I poured the mortar already and thought I was supposed to cut the drain pipe and fit the drain fitting after the mortar dried. What do I do now?!

Last shower i did, i did not use any rubber liner. I built my curb (wood, cement board, then thinset and mesh to fill out, smooth and make uniform) and preslope. After which i coated the curb and pan with Red guard 3 times (same thing as aqua defense except Red) After that i put my final slope, coated everything in RG again and then tiled over that. Hopefully that made sense. This was all done over a concrete slab.

ur the best @simonproatl , quick question, what if i want to install a shower door on the curb would i still angle everything towards the pan? or would i want the curb to be flat and level?

When you install tiles you have to make sure that they slope toward the pan. 1/4" slope is enough. Curb and shower walls must be level and square.

Thanks for the great video! My 2inch ABS riser coming through the concrete floor is not perfectly vertical. A typical ABS welded connection to that pipe would end up with an 1/8 inch deflection from horizontal at the drain surface :( ..is there a solution other than jack hammering there entire area to replace the U trap and riser?

It's a very common problem. I use a repair coupling. The one without stops. You can push the coupling slightly off on the pipe and the glue it and then connect the drain to it.

keep them coming.... so anyone of these mixed bags will work, theres no better one? I see in all your videos you use the Sakrete 50 lb. Floor Mud Mortar, but home depot is out of stock everywhere in my area, but they have the sand topping mix, are they equally the same or should I look for the sakrete one instead? maybe lowes has it?

You will find it at Lowes. I like it because it bonds better that any other sand topping mix.

homedepot is out of stock for the SAKRETE 50 lb. Floor Mud Mortar, which other one do you recommend? I like your videos, I am about to do your concrete curb this week, next is the pre slope bed... just dont know which mix to use... thanks!

For pre-sloped pan you can use anything that has cement and sand like Sand/Topping Mix. For shower pan is better to use 4 to 1 Mud Bed Mix

great videos Simon! question about this one but are we not putting screws into the concrete after it sets or are we just relying on the concrete to hold the drain flat/level after? Just cause in the video the 4 bolts you have are for the pan liner i guess and the other 4 holes would be to screw into a wood subfloor? are we just ignoring the extra holes using this method?

Ignore them if you use this drain on concrete subfloor. Or you can seal them with silicone or glue when you glue your liner to the drain. When you install shower drain on concrete sub floor: shower p-trap and pipe is surrounded by soil or concrete that hold everything in place and prevents pipes from moving or flexing. When you install the same drain on plywood subfloor then you will use those 4 holes to mount it to the plywood. When you have the access to the drain from bellow then it's better to install shower drain to the plywood first and then connect p- trap to it.

Looks like you applied the thinset over the waterproofing membrane before it dried then painted another coat of waterproofing membrane over the thinset before it dried. It would seem that once the outer layer dries it will encapsulate the wet thinset and never fully harden. What do you think.

It's better to wait till it dries. Waterproofing over wet thinset dries very well. Never had any problems.

Hi. Do you have to put a pre-slope below the dry pack? I was planning to do a dry pack pan thats sloped to a flo fx drain kit. Its going on a slab. Can i just do a sloped dry pack pan, then use the waterproof membrane, then tile? Thank you for making great video.

When I prep the shower I will use dry pack mortar to build pre slope pan that creates slope for rubber liner. Then i will install rubber liner and build shower pan using dry pack mortar. I never used Fx drain kit.

Yes. But it can get expensive. I used it on the shower curbs in the past. You can find large mesh in stucco supply store or on ebay.

Very helpful. I hadn't thought of painting on waterproofing before the PVC liner, but it makes sense. I have plenty of Redgard so might as well. A couple questions: Do you need to use adhesive between that preslope and the PVC liner? And do you allow any drying/curing time for each layer before doing the next?

You need silicone around the drain between preslope and liner. It's better to wait till every layer dries.
